Hearing the two of you interact is instructive. I would appreciate seeing/hearing Peter work with a new model with whom he doesn't already have a long-standing working relationship, just to hear how he builds that relationship in a first session.

Again, this channel is the best for portraiture and photography in general. You don't focus on gear, just technique and technical aspects of photography.

Peter is absolutely fantastic at appreciating tiny "issues" with light ( and shadow!), AND, how much fix them!
Bec is such a "flexible" model, constantly interesting, and a good videographer, to boot! ( Do you use the phrase "to boot" in Aus?)

Love the interaction; can’t believe the amount of little movements Bec is making between shots. Also love Peter’s T-shirts throughout all the videos. Also great for me this is on camera flash as I have one but hardly use it

Love those shots of Bec in coat and boots --- they have a retro 70s rock and roll vibe -- can imagine Jim Morrison and Stevie Nicks coming through the door(s) and nodding at Bec :)

Proving once again that a Camera armed with a flash, a model as lovely as Bec and a generic backdrop flipped to black and white, make for interesting pictures once tweaked a little in Photoshop. Thanks for the informative tutorial, Peter!! - Dave

The on camera flash gives the images a late 1970's vibe. Reminds me of shooting old Tri-X Pan and Orthochromatic film ( Orthochromatic can be absolutely brutal on the complexion at times, though).

I used to hate using on camera flash because I hated the harshness of it and the weird shadow that screamed that it was on camera. But over the last couple years of playing around with it, and watching videos like these, I've learned to enjoy the look it gives off. That paparazzi, almost trashy, kind of look and feel can be used to great effect. Granted sometimes I'll take it off camera for a more severe, but still fun shadow. 😊

    • @PeterCoulsonPhotographer
      @PeterCoulsonPhotographer  4 місяці тому +1

Many thanks for this new video.
@B: Many thanks for posing in this session. Is that yellowish painting and the red panel the hints of the clothes you are going to wear in TL?
@P: I cracked up when you said: “…I can’t do that color thing…”. I like colors a lot, believe me; I cannot imagine my world without colors, even in photographs and movies. But the transformation from color to BW, that happens during editing where you get rid of colors to give way to shapes, is one of the most satisfying things I have experienced during these last years. It is like finding the exit in a maze, like finding the solution to a math exam. Anyway, I will keep on try to find the meaning to colors in my photographs.

Beautiful work. I learn so much watching the two of you work. It's pretty obvious you've worked together for (?? how long) a while now and you almost speak together in a short hand. The fact that you take the time (Peter) to explain what you are doing and how you are doing it is very much appreciated. I would love to see one episode where you explain how you take a high contrast photo (where you've ?upped your green channel to bring out the hair) and fix the skin in photo shop? I'm also really curious about how you decide what photo to concentrate on: It's pretty easy to take out the photos that don't turn out and it's pretty easy to see the photos that don't need much post-production work but you take so many wonderful photos and Bec is after all very pretty and that comes through in the photos: How do you choose? Thanks both!

"i cant do that color thing" hits the BW conversion in 0.02 seconds...
quite the interesting background. another $1 purchase like that chair from a few years ago? im also intrigued by the white panel with the jagged/saw tooth edge up on blocks (it looks like youre painting it maybe?)
i know Bec is doing 'that modeling thing' but those little twitchy moves looks like shes got parkinson's. is there a video in your archives that teaches the little tiny moves like that, that i can use to teach some models, i shoot with? i saw the ones with Meika you shot with, but she still seemed to have the basic moves to start with.
this certainly seemed like a departure from your normal way of doing things as far as having the on camera flash. i liked it.
seeing your gear on the shelf prompts me to ask. do you have a kit at home that you use? i dont have a studio so all my gear is in my den. i dont shoot studio stuff (since i dont have one) but if i ever become rich enough to HAVE a studio, im thinking id need to either shlep all my gear back and forth so i have it for when i might need it or buy another set up so i could have one on hand and stuff at the studio. 1st world problems right?

Would a ball diffuser, like what we'd expect to see on a photojournalist rig, make it easier to get the skin details where you wanted without needing photoshop?
I'm one of those people that hates photoshop - I'll use Lightroom for levels and the occasional zit-correction, but the idea of repainting the model,.. well, what would be the point of hiring the model for her look to only paint it away?

@@PeterCoulsonPhotographer I printed my own some time ago, same with gridded and long tube snoots, for doing that Captain Kirk Eye-Light. Now, if only I could get a speedlight that syncs to SDI timecode for my DNG capable Cine camera :)
Playing with light can be a challenge, it can also be a lot of fun.

haha you might be the first person ever to do basically bare-bulb on camera flash from a Hasselblad. ;) Personally, I feel like, as usual, you and Bec did great it but I just don't like the on camera light grenade look. I especially hate what it does to the eyes with the itty bitty tiny catch light right in the middle of the eye. It looks like there is a spec of dust in the model's eye more than a twinkle. If you compare to that example shot at 5:59 where there was a larger softbox used, it is just so night and day how much more life is in the eyes. The shots you did with the huge white bounce were by far the best IMO because the bounce brought life back into Bec's eyes.
Just my two cents. Imo the "Uncle Terry" look always has a cheapness to it and you can achieve a similar style of light but with a way more elegant look with a beauty dish.
