Yes Will, clean them hair tools. 💁🏽♀️ I would soak mine in a container with water and dish soap or cleansing shampoo. I use a cheap soft toothbrush to get in the crevices. Wash y’all bonnets, scarves, and hair ties too. Rotate them after you wash your hair. It keeps your hairline free from irritation or breakouts.
I’m really glad that you’re so open to talking about how you treat your dandruff because I’ve been dealing with it since puberty and, although so many people deal with it, it’s so hard to find actual advice for it! You introduced me to the scalp massager and it’s helped so much!
Using the little spoolie was such a good idea because I always have so much trouble getting in the crevices of my hair tools. Especially my hair clips because they aren’t flexible like my brushes
I just wanted to say, I’ve been using the head in shoulders clinical dry scalp line. And my seborrheic dermatitis had cleared up completely. No itching, no flakes, no redness at all.
This is some of the most honest hair information from a natural hair youtube! I love that you read and used research and said as much instead of just saying things that come to mind. And I love that you went back and found more research instead of just using one study. As for your confusion about what you read, you have to look at who is funding the studies. It can be a brand that sells coconut oil paying for a study on the benefits of coconut oil.
I was hoping someone would say this. It's so true - you absolutely need to consider who's funding studies. Coconut oil has gotten a serious revival based on research that constantly flip flops in the hair care, skin care and dietary industries and it's not all honest.
Carol's daughter's new wash day delight shampoo has salicylic acid in it! Dr dray recommends it too! Also, this may seem obvious and you probably already do this but just make sure you closely check the expiration date on your products. Some products really should NOT be used past their expiration date because not only will the potency decrease, but you can get irritation! Finally, stay clear of fragrance high in the ingredients list(i.e no creme of nature and most new formulations of shea moisture). Garnier and most other white owned companies are sus as well.
Some things are hard to talk about or discuss with people, even (or especially) those you are close to and want the best for. If someone you know is struggling with dandruff and you think this will help.. sharing this video could be the way to help a friend or family member out. No need for anyone to be ashamed or embarrassed due to a lack of information, or knowledge.
So for coconut oil: both of the things you said are true, but it depends on the type of coconut oil. Regular coconut oil you can get from the grocery store makes dandruff worst. MCT oil, usually made from coconut, helps the scalp. So it just depends on the type you use.

It definitely a person to person thing. I can’t put anything olive oil on my hair. Coconut oil can work in small amounts but my hair gets irritated after a while. Grape seed oil seems to be okay, I’ve never had any dandruff backlash with it. Nowadays, I just use blue magic Indian hemp grease.
SOOOOOO, That's why I MUST wash my hair EVERY WEEK!!! Whenever I didn't, my scalp would act a fool. Thank you for breaking this down for me. My dermatologist has never explained it like this. THANK YOU WILL!! I am going to have to send you something in the mail.
Yes! It's the same for me! I never understood why some people can do long term styles in for like 3 weeks to a month... My scalp would freaking revolt if I even tried.
I’ve been using As I Am dry and itchy scalp care line and I swear this line has ceased my flakiness. I also don’t scratch my scalp when it gets closer to wash day. A game changer. Give it a try if you haven’t
I found that applying aloe Vera gel (from the bottle, Holika Holika to be specific) to my scalp and massaging avocado oil on top of it will keep dandruff and flakes out of my scalp for WEEKS. i do this every 3 days or so. It allows me to keep my mini twists in for longer than a week without having to wash my hair and scalp.
I know this helped me with my seborrheic dermatitis so I'm gunna pass over what I've learned over the years: the same yeast that causes fungal acne causes seborrheic dermatitis, so treatments that help one can help the other. Why this is a big deal is that there's this blog called simple skin care science that has 2 master posts on fungal acne, the science behind that bastard yeast that causes so many problems, treatments, and what can be used to prevent fungal acne. Those same posts ALSO have things that can help with seborrheic dermatitis, oils we can use, shampoos, conditioners, etc etc. It's worth checking out if anyone wants a quick reference for things that could help. As for oils in themselves though? Well, you have to watch for the acid content, their comedogenic rating, and the ease of washing/sweating out to determine if it's less or more likely to cause a flareup. Skin type and skin sensitivities are also a big factor, so it really REALLY is hard to even tell if one thing could work for everyone off rip. Personally though? I've had luck with MCT Oil mixed with JBCO and other carrier oils I like (Jojoba, Hemp Seed, Linoleic Sunflower Oil, Pumpkin Seed Oil, and, if my scalp is really fucked up, Deodorized Neem Oil). If I need something with more hold, I've been using vaseline mixed with mango butter and carrier oils so it's not super heavy. That, and a humidifier in this dry ass winter, really helps. Good luck!
Vaseline mixed with mango butter? Interesting. That sounds like that Softee Mango hair grease that I recently found in Walmart. It comes in a small container, but I love the smell and the way it works! Your concoction reminded me of that.
I swear will, your hair is legit looking so healthy and thick and full AND shiny from roots to ends 😍😍😍 I have thin strands and it looks thin at the ends (like thinning) ugh 😩 I also use deep conditioners for hair and scalp so I can get anti inflammatory benefits. My fav is soultanicals hibiscus healer dc My fav scalp products are also necessaire shampoo and conditioner as it has vitamins and is fragrance free (salicylic acid, hyaluronic acid, etc.) and the bread beauty scalp serum. Just a few recommendations 💕💕
Thank you for being so transparent about this, I struggle with it too. I'm learning what products help my scalp and which aggravate it. I recently had to stop using something because even though it was giving me crazy moisture it was making my scalp TOO oily & causing crazy dandruff. I went back to basics and you know what's been working for me lately? Blue Magic Hair Grease!!! I may have to try the coconut oil version to see if it helps even more.
I stand by tea tree and mint leave in conditioning sprays. I'm not a fan of oils so the infused sprays are more convenient for me. The tea tree really helps inflammation and the mint is really good for relieving itchiness and STIMULATING GROWTH. It literally makes your scalp tingle. My hair has been growing so much.
after washing my scalp 10 times lol conditioning and styling, I have to dry my scalp. if I don't dry my scalp with the hairdryer on a cool setting (no diffuser) then my scalp will stay moist and get itchy and flaky. I have a sweaty scalp so the cool setting feels so good on my scalp.
Hask Charcoal with citrus oil purifying shampoo or Neutrogena T/Gel therapeutic shampoo. Those did wonders for me and I no longer have dandruff problems. They balanced the ph level of my scalp and I can actually use regular shampoos now but occasionally use one of those for my wash days.
You should try keracare dry and itchy scalp system.. I cured both my sis and an ex friend of mines with it. My sis had sores and bad flaking of the scalp with hers and my exfriend had dandruff all in his face and clothes... I used the system all up once on both and it was gone permanently! You should def. try it
I was wondering why my scalp was always acting a fool it was because the oil I was putting on my head was making the dandruff worse and I have psoriasis. I would just wash my hair everyday and I got this ointment from my derm .
I stay away from coconut oil the only oil that has worked for me is Olive Oil mixed w aloe. I’ve been too scared to try head and shoulders because they say once you use it you can’t stop.
Thank you for all the recommendations because I’m really trying to get this scalp together 😩 At the moment I’m trying to see if using sulfate free shampoos make a difference, because none of the usual dandruff shampoos are cutting it for me (and I hate how they make my hair feel).
I think I've finally figured out what works for me...for now. I use the Act & Acre Hair cleanse and conditioner and sometimes their scalp detox oil but their scalp renew serum works great for more aggressive dandruff. the day before wash day I dampen my hair/scalp to open the pores and oil my scalp with Sulphur 8, massage it in and go to bed. The next day I use the A&A products and I haven't seen a flake since. I also switched to using wooden hair tools only which was a better decision for my hair because it doesn't create static like plastic combs do. Also, I stopped oiling my scalp; I think everything you said about what oils the Mallasezia eats is absolutely true because once I stopped oiling my scalp and only moisturizing the hair; its been smooth sailing.
I'm speaking from personal experience for my scalp issues but if y'all can, just get a prescription for ketoconazole. It helps for seborrheic dermatitis/mild dandruff and clears it right up. Oils on the scalp are not good for this condition. It also helps to know what flakes you are dealing with. Psoriasis, dandruff, or product buildup flakes all look different and need different ingredients to help keep the symptoms at bay.
