    'Confess, Fletch!' was so good. Think it was my favorite comedy that year. Saw it in theater with my buddy who's also a Fletch fan and we laughed almost non-stop. I bought that DVD on day one.

    Hey, Heath, here's an idea for a video. I've enjoyed your chats with label heads - they're always very interesting. How about a series of videos with labels that no longer exist? I think plenty of folks would find them interesting. For instance, who was behind Olive Films and what happened to them? And Midnight Legacy? Remember them? I'd love to hear the behind-the-scenes of why they only released one Blu-ray then disappeared. Whadayathink?

    • @CerealAtMidnight
      @CerealAtMidnight  5 місяців тому +5

      People at some of those labels were hard to get ahold of even when their companies were in business. Based on past experience, I don't think many of them are going to want to go on the record and talk about what went wrong. In some cases, it's the death of someone important to a company, in other cases, the people running the company were just d!cks. I totally understand the appeal of those interviews, but I also think that it could go sour in a lot of different ways. There's also a risk of slander and opening a can of legal worms that I'd rather stay away from. If I see an opportunity, I'll jump on it, though. Thank you for the suggestion!

      @@CerealAtMidnight Totally understandable. I know Nick Redman's passing lead to Twilight Time's demise. And the guy who started Midnight Legacy was known to be a bit of a, um, character. How about a video that does not involve principals and just you pointing out the pros and cons of each label? There's also No Shame, who were tops during the DVD era.

    Hi Heath, thanks for the Kino updates this month! I just got in that Jeanne Moreau set the other day. Got it mainly for the Lillian Gish doc/film. Haven't given it a watch yet, but it just fascinated me enough to order. It also has a 22 min interview with Clint Eastwood on there from 1994. Also, kind of here for both showing the new titles and also reviewing them :)

      This is the release (beyond HIGH NOON of course) that caught my eye. The Gish doc especially. Put it in my cart, a new stage in my window shopping routine. When pay day comes, I’ll have a few more things to think about.

    I watch most of your videos and honestly, I think you're putting together a solid mix of various types of videos. Covering these Kino releases is great, and I think it's helpful when you do a review of a specific title.
    On that note, I'd be super interested if you reviewed Nostalghia by Tarkovsky. I've watched a couple of his movies in the past and wasn't a huge fan; but I'd be interested in hearing someone else's thoughts on his work.
    Again, though, I enjoy the mixture of new release information; discussions with people like Max Alan Collins, Brian Krey, and others; and individual movie reviews.

    Great update! I'm here for the hauls and the reviews! fwiw, FLETCH got a "regular" Universal studios blu-ray release on its own and as a double feature with UNCLE BUCK. Wonder why FLETCH wasn't released on 4K?

    • @CerealAtMidnight
      @CerealAtMidnight  5 місяців тому

      Glad you're here for both! Frank tends to play things conservatively with 4Ks, and comedies don't sell as well as other genres, so my guess is that it's just too risky and expensive to put Fletch on 4K when the return isn't guaranteed.

  • @MosesWine
    @MosesWine 5 місяців тому +1

    Confess Fletch does in fact have a blu ray but it's pretty lackluster with no special features. Hoping Kino can re-issue some day and give it some love.

    Tarkovsky is on my personal short list of the greatest directors of all time and Nostalghia is just one example of his mastery of the subtle deconstruction of the human psyche and how ones state of being inevitably influences their perception of reality. It's Solaris without the science fiction trappings. A Masterpiece.

    Heath, it was funny listening to you try to pronounce Borowczyk! (Phonetically, it’s “borrow-chick.”) Funnily enough, I just received my order of Arrow’s BEHIND CONVENT WALLS in this morning’s post. He is probably best known for IMMORAL TALES (1973), THE BEAST (1975), and THE STRANGE CASE OF DR. JEKYLL & MISS OSBOURNE (1981). I’d characterize his work as EuroCult/Arthouse - his films are often derived from literary classics, are beautifully photographed, and the sexual content is usually more sensual & erotic than pornographic. I feel as though you must have seen the Arrow collection of his films, the name was just tripping you up for a moment.

    It saddens me, Heath, that you seem to have an aversion to Christian-themed movies, or films coming from a Christian perspective; enough so that you feel the need to warn us about it. Having watched hundreds of your videos, I understand your particular religious upbringing, but not all of us brought up in the church felt smothered by our experience. In fact, for many, it was quite the opposite. I can, and do empathize with your feelings, and maybe I'm reading too much into your words. Perhaps you're not so much casting aspersions on faith-based films, as you are trying to inform us of what to expect going in. Anyway, I think you're one of the best doing what you do in the youtube community. Keep up the good work!

    • @CerealAtMidnight
      @CerealAtMidnight  5 місяців тому +1

      My issue is not with faith (I remain a man of great faith, as I think comes through in my work) but when faith becomes a commodity that gets marketed and sold, it gets...well, complicated. And no, I wasn't casting aspersions on faith-based films (even though they are almost all awful, from a creative standpoint), but as someone who has been in or around that world my entire life, I have learned the language. Comparing a small, Oklahoma-shot movie about teen pressure to The Goonies or The Breakfast Club is outrageous and ill-advised--but fits with how youth pastors talk. Also, nobody says "Fun for the whole fam." The trifecta would be if the PR person who wrote the back of the box blurb had a soul patch--the only acceptable facial hair for the church over the last 30 years.

    • @ThisIsTheRoad
      @ThisIsTheRoad 5 місяців тому +2

      You can't take a person's faith away and why should you? But it's always better to give a reasonable warning about any kind of religious indoctrination.

    With the prodigious volume of new releases every month, the biggest challenge is ‘discovery,’ i.e., what’s out there, and what’s worthwhile? That’s why both types of videos are valuable. Silent films is a major lacuna for me, and your full review of the Eureka MOC edition of The Cat and the Canary convinced me to grab a copy. In one of your recent Kino monthly releases videos, you showed the Homicide Hills DVD box set, something that I never knew existed (after all, it’s a German TV show). Well, I purchased a copy and binged all the episodes, and I think it’s one of the funniest TV series ever.

    "Nostalghia" is by far my most anticipated 4K release of the year for a couple of reasons ! One, given the current political climate, restorations of classic Soviet films in 4K is extremely rare, and I think this *might* be the first Russian film to get the treatment. The fact that it was produced in Italy is what made the restoration possible, but the film is very much about Tarkovsky longing for his home after he was forced to leave Russia. Also, previous masters of this were truly terrible, second or third generation copies - and to date it was the worst looking Tarkovsky film by a mile. Now with this release, it is THE BEST looking Tarkovsky film by a mile. Given that its so rare for 'esoteric' art films to get the 4K treatment, period, I think this release is incredibly special and should be talked about a lot more. If you have a chance to watch it a few times and dig into the extras, I'd love to hear your take. Thanks Heath !

    • @levileveridge6621
      @levileveridge6621 5 місяців тому

      Yes, exciting to see Tarkovsky getting the 4K love. I’m sure we’ll be seeing Criterion updating their releases of his films: IVAN’S CHILDHOOD, ANDREI RUBLEV, SOLARIS, STALKER, and MIRROR. He’s like the Russian version of Kubrick, or Bergman, or Fellini - one of the greats - a poet of cinema.

    Heath, I highly recommend that you explore Tarkovsky's work even just a bit, it's magnificent, espceailly Andrei Rublev which is one of the most stunning movies ever made. You mean Jeanne Moreau (her name is misspelled in the time notes or whatever it's called :-)) and I beleive you pronounce it the way you pronounce the name "Gene". Anyway, she's one of the greats of European cinema in the 60's and 70's esepcially. You're a film noir guy, so I urge you to check her out in Elevator to the Gallows, basically a French film noir film, where she plays a great femme fatale. Speaking of noirs, I just saw Dick powell in Pitfall. Have you seen it? Preeety good. And finally, Karakoe was actually filmed and is taking place in my town of Holon, Israel, not quite Tel Aviv but not too far either. Peace!

    Thanks, Heath! Believe it or not, I pre-ordered Invisible Fight several weeks ago. The Rory Calhoun - Julie Adams western looks interesting. I haven't seen Nostalghia but I've seen several Tarkovsky movies including Stalker, Andrei Rublev and Solaris. His films are slow paced, very strange, but intriguing. Off-topic from this video but since you have region B capability and recently mentioned South Korean cinema, a 4K of Memories of Murder is soon being released from Curzon. It's an amazing film you need to see.

    I took a peek at the VHS collecting hobby and it is now full-on baseball card collecting, "professional" grading, and decor."They" say Find them sealed and keep them sealed. I believe it is an attempt at creating value for a video that is too old to watch. Sorry that you don't like that. I think it's odd myself, but that's the evolution of the broader hobby if you care to go down that road. Peace.

      t's really not, my friend. That's a very small, niche subculture trying to profit off of the larger fandom. We need more people saying "rip the shrink wrap off, watch the movie, and share that experience with as many people as you can."
