I’ve got a new Sherline lathe coming next week, and looking forward to learning it after years of using larger lathes for several years! I’m also looking forward to accumulating the accessories that I’ll need for my purposes. That being said, I don’t feel like the threading kit will be part of that armada of tooling! Too many steps to using it vs tap & dies! But I thank you for producing this video to show the steps necessary to use it! Really enjoying your channel even though the vids were made years ago. It all still applies!

found this threading kit on eBay got a real good deal on it. it did not come with instructions though your video series so far is perfect for us aspiring home machinists. Thanks!

+pete garssia Always great when you find those deals and can save a few bucks! You can also download the instructions from Sherline's website also, there is a chart in there you'll need for setting up the gears for different thread sizes. Today is the first time I've started using the attachment and made two mistakes already in two attempts, I'll publish the next video with the mistakes I've made so you can avoid the same ones :)

Good timing! My lathe package came with the threading accessory and I've been thinking about installing it.
I've read that folks will often start threads with the threading accessory and then finish up with a tap or die. It sounds like that helps to get a tap or die started without misalignment. I've no personal experience with this.............yet!

+James Thornton My first attempt with the threading attachment had me swap two gears and get the wrong thread, oops. We'll be making some other gadgets later like tapping blocks and tap/die guides that will help us keep everything aligned and should be easier then using the threading attachment to start some threads.

Gadgets are nice. I'm starting to realize that half the fun of machining is to make gadgets that provides the tools to get a job done.
What really makes this whole thing nice, is that it's all Sherline based!

Those gears are terribly manufactured. Its obvious someone is cnc machining those by the keyway slot. Any quality gear is made on a hob and considering you're making threads you would want a better quality even if its a cheapo benchtop lathe. Doing the job!, versus Doing it with quality and accuracy, are different aspects to any machining process.
