I've beaten the NES version of Battletoads once (after playing almost non-stop for an entire month) and while it was very satisfying and rewarding it's not something I'd be in a hurry to try again. If anyone wants to play Battletoads just because it's a fun game and not because they want to torture themselves I'd recomend the Sega Mega Drive/Genesis version. It has pretty much the exact same level layouts as the NES version but it fixes some minor glitches and problems with the hit detection and gives you just a split second extra reaction time on some of the more extremely difficult levels (Looking at you Volkmire's Inferno) the changes are extremely subtle but they make the game much more fair and enjoyable.
Derreck. I'll be perfectly honest, here. I laughed...when the game locked up. (So typical NES.) I applauded when you outdid your best in the tunnel. (Though, you never beat the hardest part, where it's a friggin' single pixel dodge game. You reached it at the very end.) And, I'll ease your frustration. The Turbo Tunnel? That is...just a warm up. There is a second stage where they re-visit those flying bikes and the difficulty is ramped up at least by a factor of three...or four. Heck. Five...perhaps. I've seen a 'very long' video of four people competing to beat BattleToads. Using emulation with only an infinite lives cheat turned on. Thousands of lives were spent. HDD's were pushed to their limits to capture it all. One victor emerged at slamming the Dark One. Game's impossible. I consider it a success that way back in the day, not only me, but me AND A FRIEND owned the Turbo Tunnel in co-play mode! ...would have had a heart attack back then, had I ever known that THAT was the game's idea of an easy ride! And...DOES ANYONE KNOW WHY this game is so hard? _BlockBuster._ Somebody didn't want this game to be rented in a day, beaten and never make the sales. And so...they re-defined NES difficulty. WHAT A BAD CALL!!! Click it down to Mega Man difficulty and...who knows? Might have had millions of fans begging for another BattleToads sequel to come out after a series of 500+ titles were already around.
As a player who can get to the 2nd last stage and never complete it, you really don't want to see all of it. It's just stressful and frustrating beyond all belief. I've been trying to beat this game since I was 4. I am now 22. This game will haunt me until I somehow manage to beat it.
Actually beat this game back when it first came out. Rented it for a weekend and played for almost two days straight to do that. I was 17. I'm 40 now. And I doubt I could do it again. Most of my time was spent trying to memorize the pattern to the stupid jet bike section. Oh, and once you get past the barriers, there are these floating things that move back and forth across your path of travel so that memorization is useless. Have fun.
People, we need more of this, it'd an amazing way to donate (Or not.), and it gives us more content. Derek, _do us a favor_ and have this as an addition.
even as a kid I was like "did any one ever test this game? or any NES game ?" BATTLETOADS would have been such a good game as well as a lot of other games if they where weren't so damn hard
On the MegaDrive version(I admit I was using an emulator, but no save states) I got to a place where I had to race some bastard before a bomb exploded, never got past that. There's a chick that I used to borrow the NES version from, who said that she finished the game, I'm not sure if I can belive her.
See, people say games today are too easy. That may be true in some cases, but I'll take an easy game like Call of Duty over an insanely hard game like Battletoads any day. When a game is so hard you literally get frustrated and angry, that's not fun, it's irritating.
if you wanna beat Battletoads, you MUST practice on an emulator. with that being said, i have been practicing on a Retron5, and while i can't beat the game (yet), i can get pretty far.
Battletoads was a very well made game, but the difficulty made it unfun. I think they should have at least made continues unlimited (like in ninja gaiden 1 and 2) which were also very hard games, but at least allowed you that leniency so that you can easily memorize the later areas as you play and eventually beat it. Also friendly fire in the coop mode was a terrible design choice. Although i'm aware of people beating this game in single player, I believe it literally is impossible to do it in multiplayer without cheats and both players make it through the end.
I can't stress how much it doesn't matter not being a complete badass while playing video games, I am not, and will not EVER have a nerdgasm and think that there is a need to up the ante a bit by playing on a extReme diffuculty mode taking place where I should be reaping in the glory playing the game on good ol' I beat it and so F u right-spreading capability. Thanks
I beat this game probably about 10 years ago with only continuing once on the final level (and previously I'd never been to it before). People say how hard this game is, and yes it's very difficult. But it can be done. I didn't use any warps or cheats and it took countless hours, but I beat the fucking thing. I still wish I could have done it without continuing at all, though. it's just a very unforgiving game. tons of cheap deaths and memorization involved. the feeling of accomplishment from beating some of these levels and having tons of lives and maxing out the score, though, was priceless, and probably still my #1 gaming achievement today. I'm just some guy who loves hard games. If I can do it, anybody can. the game is amazing, with great level design and production values. if you don't have the patience for it, that's fine, but don't bag on the game because you suck at it.
I enjoy Battletoads and have a lot of fun with it... Until I get past the 2nd level... Then it's all frustration... Battletoads in Battlemaniacs on SNES is way better... Btw, I think it's the best Battletoads game...
Don't feel bad man hard as this game is, and besides you can't really beat the NTSC North American version of BattleToads on the NES as it has a glitch on the last stages that prevents you from doing as such, even if you got too the last state Ahmed would have technically still won anyways, but you do play better then myself at this game, but do give the Genesis, and Game Gear versions a shot as they are just as hard, but graphics got a bit of an upgrade, and so did the sound(Genesis version at least) :-)

I finished this one as a kid. The reason why I finished it? I had nothing else to play.
A life time of regret and failure out of ten? 10/10 then!
Derreck. I'll be perfectly honest, here.

Derek, you should watch Proton John's four-player Battletoads race. They had infinite continues on, and the game was still nearly impossible.
That video got me hooked on the Rat Race music.
Id love to see the entirety of this. Uncut. Yes, I'm a sadist.
I love your name and icon. #METROID4LYFE
AlphaXOmega Haha, thank you :)

Hugh Biffingmock I've beaten the game... Trust me, I want to see it all. :P
OmegaMetroid93
*bows before you
I am not worthy of such greatness.
I wish I could take the challenge. I want $400.
I played this on Sega Genesis\Megadrive as a kid and never made it past the ice stage. Good times.
I liked how Derek's fond spirit slowly got chipped away as the video goes on until it just whittled to nothing.
Please do more vids like this, or like your old vids. Good to see you again, bro.
The first time I beat Turbo Tunnel I shat my pants from excitement.
You need to stock up on 1ups knocking the birds off the walls on the second stage if you want to stand a chance beating Battletoads.

I don't think I even know what the next level after the bikes is.
Derek! While in the impact crater attempt to juggle the birds to earn extra lives
even as a kid I was like "did any one ever test this game? or any NES game ?"
BATTLETOADS would have been such a good game as well as a lot of other games if they where weren't so damn hard
I enjoyed playing battle toads and double dragon for the super nintendo, I think it was also on nes I don't remember.
On the MegaDrive version(I admit I was using an emulator, but no save states) I got to a place where I had to race some bastard before a bomb exploded, never got past that. There's a chick that I used to borrow the NES version from, who said that she finished the game, I'm not sure if I can belive her.
Derek, seriously, this is a great format and you should try and revisit it. Maybe start with something reasonable like Mario 3.
Derrick is 30?
Games were a lot more difficult in the NES days I think than now.
love this game! had it as a kid... I am able to beat it if I use warps, otherwise I can make it to robo-manus or so
Well Derek, not bad! Like another challenge!? The hardest game from my childhood: Can you finish the game GODS on the genesis?
gotta love brave in the background lol
See, people say games today are too easy. That may be true in some cases, but I'll take an easy game like Call of Duty over an insanely hard game like Battletoads any day. When a game is so hard you literally get frustrated and angry, that's not fun, it's irritating.
But games that are too easy aren't fun either, right?
lolavex
Kirby and Pokemon say 'hi'.
do you have battletoads for wii?
if you wanna beat Battletoads, you MUST practice on an emulator. with that being said, i have been practicing on a Retron5, and while i can't beat the game (yet), i can get pretty far.
Damn you turbo tunnel the nightmare of my childhood.
Rumor has it that their will be a new version of this game made.
That would rule.
Very well played, what a game
I have beaten it about 40 times. No kidding. I want my money.
I love this game. (cue screaming raging comments and replys)

Id def be getting that $400 if i was offered.
I was able to finish this game at age 9. Now I'm 32 and can't go further than level 3. Shame on me.
Derek, how about you give ME $400? Have you ever tried to send a fax? It is a difficult process
Awesome game....
Why it was made so ridiculously difficult?
That was way funnier than any of that smosh shit
Some twitch tv events would be cool
I enjoy Battletoads and have a lot of fun with it...
Until I get past the 2nd level...
Then it's all frustration...
Battletoads in Battlemaniacs on SNES is way better... Btw, I think it's the best Battletoads game...
Haha that was a great episode :)
Could he not have used warps?
Derrick always wins, he is number 1!!!
just like schmitty and his soda hat.
i usually make to the 3rd level. i cant make it passed that..haha

Don't you guys get all your games for free? And you are talking about the stuff you give us? xD
Awesome video none the less, and congrats for besting your own previous runs. That is about as far as I've ever made it either.
They are sent in as donations by people who would like to see them reviewed with priority.
Man I wish I was as smart as them hah
I believe they also buy games as well though a lot of the older stuff is donated to them
Как девка ноет
