Symphony No. 3, "The Camp Meeting": Written in 1908-10, when Ives was in his mid-30s; Premiered on April 5, 1946 in New York City conducted by Lou Harrison
Ives was one of the first major American composers of concert music. But during the day he worked at his own insurance company, one of the most successful in the country.
This piece started as 3 separate organ works based on church hymns before it was assembled into this symphony.
Ives loved story-telling through his music. This work follows the progress of an old-time gospel meeting. It won the Pulitzer Prize 37 years after it was composed, an honor that Ives didn’t care about at all.
I made the effort... I heard the three symphonies (I, II and III) of Charles Ives and, notwithstanding I enjoyed some parts, I found these symphonies kinda common, ordinary, even trivial... None of the three supports a comparison with the M O N U M E N T A L IVth Symphony of this unforgettable author... That masterpiece was the paramount work of his life. Greets from Mendoza, Arg. Hard to disagree with your point...but the other three symphonies aren't comparable to Symphony 4, and using "common elements" is a worthy device in symphonic work.
Symphonies 1 2 + 3, particularly 1+ 3, provide music at once sophisticated and popular. IVES is beyond discount. Occurs to me you discounted him.
