  • My first look at the Chaoticlab CNC Tap! I have been asked so many times about CNC parts and have stayed away - now I finally decided to dip my toes in and see how well this CNC Tap works out. This is the first of two videos, this one covering an unboxing and rough overview of the unit and how to safely lube the "magic" MGN7 within. I say magic because it seems super tight - but in a good way. Very excited about this one!
    In the next video about this unit, I'll be comparing data from the printed Tap and its accuracy to this unit - will it be better? I can say it's lighted, thinner, and seems a bit more rigid! Hope to see you there!
    This unit was NOT provided at any discount and it was solely purchased for me to test use and review. I offer a link below to purchase if you choose. Hector at Fabreeko is a good guy and very helpful!

    I ordered mine direct, and it has landed somewhere here in the US. Hopefully I’ll get it when the rest of my kit shows up next week.
    Thank you for the run through. Looking forward to your next video.

    I am definitely liking this cnc tap, I have had some issues with tap and I think it's due to the rigidity of ABS. I am anticipating you testing this to see what your thoughts are comparing it to previous tap. As for all of the other CNC upgrades, yup, interested in seeing that upgrade as well. I am wondering if that will improve printing performance and even speed overall. No, not interested in speed benchy printing challenge, but would like to see you also test the "stock" Voron vs the CNC upgraded Voron to see how much difference there is in quality and speed in comparison.

      This will definitely be one of those - "Your results may vary", situation. But, based on the deflection I was able to see with the standard Tap I have decent hopes that this is a decent upgrade! Hopefully I can work something out to fund or get a complete kit from Chaoticlab for testing/review and use. We'll see. If not I may do some testing with different ABS or ASA filaments (carbon additives and such).

    Made sure mine went together per CL instructions making sure the switch was properly depressed when the magnet was engaged with the rail. Mostly common sense stuff, but trying to stay true to CL guidance. Looking forward to the next video...thanks for making this one!

      Any time Woody! I believe you were the first person to ask me about the CNC Tap and I sort of blew it off since I wasn't too interested in CNC parts at the time. Since you asked I have fielded at least another dozen questions that included CNC parts - so I guess you're a trend setter!

      Next live chat session I will be doing some testing with the standard Tap so I have baseline data. After that (next video) we'll be putting on the CNC Tap and comparing notes!

      Well with any luck - and if they dare... Maybe the rebuild of my other Voron 2.4 will include a complete CNC kit. Are people interested in the complete kit?

      @@BuildItBasement Yes, that is what i just got done doing. I'm currently installing the belts. The CNC kit is beautiffully machined. Taylor said he didn't like it because it doesn't have "Flex" in the gantry, but it does! I'm so glad at this point of the build that i got the CNC kit. You make great videos! The older vids from the last build are a little dark, but this build series is great.

      There are other places you can buy them - I happened to get mine from Fabreeko... I think it's shaping up to be a nice unit.

    Hi. I got mine today. Does it suppose to return back to the original position (when rail is in contact with the magnet) without any extra help? In my case it stays where you put it when the rail moved away from the magnet just 1mm away or so - it feels very stiff, not smooth at all. I haven't cleaned up mine yet btw.. Just wandering what should be normal expected behaviour. Thanks!

      Not without the added weight of the completed SB. The high amount of drag is not always a bad thing, most of the time it's the preload (the part that makes the rail less sloppy). Once you add the toolhead it should act differently.

      Yeah - Hurt my soul a little... But, for the Tap specifically, there are a lot of reasons to use a metal or manufactured kit.

    Hello. How have you supplied the 5v to the CNC Tap? If your LDO kit is like mine the Stealthburner tool head PCB does 24v to the probe. I want to get the CNC Tap now I can buy it from a UK source, and I’m starting my build today, so in several weekends time I’ll be at the point where I need to install the Tap. Just rewatching your frame build video as I type and once finished I’ll build the frame.

    • @BuildItBasement
      @BuildItBasement  Рік тому +1

      There are multiple ways to get the 5V you need for the Tap. I always suggest 5v vs. 24v since the voltage is readily available with minor work. First solution is dependent on the PCB you are using in your toolhead. if that board has the ability to power Neopixles for the SB head, it has 5V. Look at this video for what I did specifically @ 5:30 (it was earlier in the series) ua-cam.com/video/jJyb38AUYzg/v-deo.html Your other solution, more work, ifs to run a 5v wire from your MCU to your tools head. I don't know what your specific setup is, hopefully some of this helps... Let me know!

    Did the using the rail and that magnet require more force to seperate? My worry would be that needing more force to seperate might be harder on the bed surface.

    • @BuildItBasement
      @BuildItBasement  Рік тому +2

      I think that could be (unscientifically) tested by me - I'll make a note. It should be close! The unit weighs less so the added force may be offset by the lack of weight, some.

      @macdox69 Рік тому +1

      @@BuildItBasement I went ahead and ordered one even though I had a normal TAP on order as well. At this point I'd like to spend less time tinkering with my Voron and just have parts that have longer longevity. Thanks for the heads up on Chaotic, never knew of them before your video. Checking out some of their other products as well.

    • @BuildItBasement
      @BuildItBasement  Рік тому +1

      @@macdox69 I honestly don't know too much about them. It does look like they are actually putting some effort into the engineering of the parts they are selling and not just mashing out crap. They have a nice full kit for the 2.4 and also a carbon fiber kit that is $$$.... Who knows maybe I'll have more to talk about - the Tap was an easy goto since the design lends itself to a more solid material.

    Looking forward to your testing, looks a lot easier to install than the DIY tap! Maybe I get into that... Is it available in Europe as well?

      We'll it comes pre-made so you get that going in! I'm super excited to see if it is at least as accurate as the DIY Tap - The claim is .0004, That's quite good. Probably what the microswitch is rated at.

      There is a printable part for the V1 CNC tap - the 2 comes with a bracket. You can find the parts in eth Chatoticlab git.
