Man that Wings/Avs rivalry was something else, and what made it even more special was just the sheer talent level of the players on both teams. Such equality, the teams basically mirrored each other in every aspect. You always knew you were in for a treat when you saw the Wings and Avs lace em up to play each other.
Elite equality is spot on. Sakic forsberg hejduk tanguay lining up against yzerman hull shanahan federov. Lidstrom and chelios against blake and foote and of course hasek vs roy! Such an amazing rivalry.
I worked broadcast and house audio for Avalanche games in the 90’s and 2000’s. Mr. Lacroix knew the names of every single person who even remotely worked around him and even knew their spouses and kid’s names and he’d ask about them. Once after a game during a blizzard, he stuffed about 10 people into his Chevy Suburban and drove them all to their cars in the parking lot and made sure everyone got out. He was just such an amazing man. Godspeed Mr. L!
Being a fan of either of those 2 teams during that time was an absolute electric factory. I became an Avs fan early on in life thanks to Peter forsberg. This was still hands down the greatest rivalry I’ve ever witnessed. Keep your Yankees redsox or dodgers giants or your lakers Celtics and give me Avs wings ALL DAY
Larnell Lewis on drums, Marchand licking ice cream, and Letterkenny on the jacket. Genius! And a bunch of guys pushing a Zamboni is the icing on the cake.
Without Pierre, Colorado wouldn't have the team they have today. Thank you Pierre. Colorado is in forever debt to your and your dedication to the game.
The unfortunate thing about renewing that rivalry is that both teams are in opposite conferences usually, except for this season. With Seattle joining the league and its schedule, it will still be difficult to have any games between Colorado and Detroit, maybe one or two at the most. If they were to meet up in the Stanley Cup Finals someday, then perhaps that rivalry could be renewed again.
@@mayhemmayhem5858 The rivalry was dead before that. When the two teams met in the second round of the 2008 playoffs, Colorado's coach was asked if the rivalry was still on. He answered that to maintain a rivalry you need two really good teams, "and I don't think that we have kept up our end of the bargain". Detroit went on to sweep that series on their way to the 2008 Stanley Cup. More recently, I have seen a lot of parallels between the two teams' rebuilding processes, with the biggest difference being that Colorado started theirs a few years earlier. In the salary cap era, can Colorado remain a contender long enough for Detroit to become one again? If so, then the one thing that could bring back the archrivalry with a vengeance after all of this time, would be a head-to-head Stanley Cup Finals matchup between these two teams.

As a kid these were my favorite two teams despite the rivalry 😅 i remember watching the brawl after a outta town hockey game at a restaurant...good times!!!
Excellent throwback. Still remember watching that game live…was the 2nd season coming back to the NHL after a decade hiatus. Whatever happened to Zenon Konopka?! I know Michael Haley had takers even as far as just a few seasons ago at least…
I was thinking of that. Crazy game. It was a game changer for the Isles. They've been pretty competitive year in year out since that. Never really seen the isles get out muscled or disrespected since then

One of the greatest rivals ever. that goalie fight goes down to one of the BEST. I remember staying up late for those two periods sudden death over.
Which one lol? Roy and Osgood or Roy and Vernon?
Yea what made the rivalry so great his they where both contending team with a lot of talent that hated each other

Glad I’m not the only one who noticed Larnell!
Did I trick my non-hockey-loving husband into watching this by saying Larnell was in it? Yes, yes I did.
Nice little tribute to Mr. Lacroix at the end. Classy
Just happened to spot usage of my VCR stock footage in the wild. I'm honored to have contributed to this series! Keep em coming

I’m not a fan of either team, but I really hope this rivalry can start up again. Hopefully it doesn’t take Detroit, too long to become good.
i don’t think that’s ever gonna happen today it’s more likely for a rivalry to develop against one of the better teams in the west rn like vegas

Unfortunately once Detroit got moved to the eastern conference, the rivalry essentially died.
