Well done Tim. Me and Ludek ended up further to North, then Pavla and Pawel joined us and we spent the night there. I would say that 7th and 8th of April that was the most memorable flights of 2023 for me. Thanks;)
Thanks Marek, glad you enjoyed the vid. It was such a great weekend - I can't remember the last time we had two fantastic days back-to-back! Roll on the new season, and hope to see you soon! PS. I'm working on the vid of Good Friday's triangle flight...
Thank you Tim, i need to heer that loverly beeping sound to somehow make it through the dark times to the sommer :) I really hope you have something in store for the months to come as well. ❤
Thanks Jeroným, glad you enjoyed it! Looking out of the window now it really is grim - heavy rain...! I'm working on this year's Gumball videos so don't worry, there'll be something to keep you going!
I've had horses trying to eat my kit too :D. They don't seem to be fussy - they'll eat Ozone or Advance. Nice flight! Interesting about the fate of the town - my job is in coastal flooding - but in Scotland.
Thanks Stephen, glad you enjoyed the vid. Yes, Fairbourne’s been in the news quite a lot as being the first settlement that’s deemed too expensive to save, but I read last week that locals are trying to fund a breakwater/reef scheme I think it was to try and protect it…
Really enjoyed that, Tim - a worthy flight to which to lose my site record :) I shall definitely be using your route across Mynydd Troed next time - even on my flight to Llanbrynmair I had a low save from literally 150ft at Talgarth, having gone the same way (pretty much straight over the dragon's back).
Thanks Rich! I think I had the site record for a few minutes before Marek and Ludek flew a bit further (see www.xcontest.org/2023/world/en/flights/detail:luda/8.04.2023/11:08). Mind you they had the advantage of Ludek's wife Pavla following them as they were heading to Snowdonia for the rest of the w/e...
Haha thanks, just kept on putting off the 360° editing... Still got the previous day's triangle to do, and the Gumball vids so there'll be stuff to keep you going through the winter!
@@apexjunky Didn’t really get on with it if I’m honest. Super comfortable but I found it a bit fiddly - clipping in, attaching instruments, trying to get water nozzle through harness - plus I found the instrument panel too close to my chest… but in addition to all that I don’t actually need to lose any weight on my glider 😂
Thanks for another great video😃 I noticed that you are now flying with Weightless. I fly with Lightness 3 and I'm thinking of switching to Weightless, because of the lighter weight... I will be very happy if you could comment on the difference in roll stability between these two harnesses. Thanks.
Glad you enjoyed it...! I bought a Weightless at the beginning of the season and really only had two flights on it before switching back to my trusty (and somewhat beaten-up) Lightness 3. I got it in my head that I needed a Weightless and when one came up at a good price I jumped at it, however I soon realised I didn't really need it at all! The main thing was that I don't actually need to lose any weight with my flying gear, except possibly when doing H&F races and volbiv, but for volbiv space and durability is more important anyway... Once I'd got it set up correctly is was really comfortable, it fitted like a glove, however I found it fiddly to get into and fiddly to use - eg flight deck "bib" - and also getting my camelback nozzle through the harness was a struggle. I didn't find the windscreen particularly effective either... So whilst it's a lovely bit of kit I decided it wasn't for me so I sold it again and now I'm waiting for the Lightness 4! Hope that helps...
I’ve just realised I didn’t actually answer your question on roll stability… I must admit it’s had to remember as this flight back at Easter was the last time I flew the Weightless… I think all I can really say is that I felt very comfortable flying it, both in terms of physical comfort, and flying comfort. I suspect it is more roll stable than the L3 but can’t say for sure…
Epic! Really enjoyed that. I watched you go over Plynlymon as I know thats real boonies. Great height tho... Next season! I want to caht about your camera set up. Thats the Vista 360 isnt it? Will call as I need to know a set up that works cos they are different cameras.
Just a question about staying warm: I got up to 600m at Devil's Dyke recently and I was very cold. I have: a down jacket (light) Very thin fleece - to be replaced with a 300gsm fleece waterproof outer that acts as a windbreaker trousers The idea is to replace the thin fleece with a 300gsm fleece, wear long johns and possibly add a waterproof outer to my trousers. I know pilots wear heated gloves, but I was wondering about layering here as well - say with wool and thicker gloves on the outside. I'm on an open harness and don't benefit from the wind breaking abilities of a pod. Any thoughts would be well regarded. Great vid as usual Tim.
Hi Jacque, I’m glad you enjoyed the vid 👍🏻 Re staying warm, I think a pod harness (together with a windscreen) makes the biggest difference however you shouldn’t rush to get one if you’re not ready. Deffo wear long johns and a windproof/waterproof layer, but maybe even better would be skiiing salopettes especially if they go up to your chest. As for your top half, I’m a big fan of Montane base layers - I live in them in the winter! But in addition I’d recommend a couple of thin fleecy layers and a thicker down/puffa type jacket. A buff round your neck and a balaclava are essential too. As for gloves I’ve not gone down the heated gloves route - it’s just more faff, although maybe they do work well… I wear wrist “sleeves” (dunno what they’re called) which go over my thumbs, then thin silk (maybe) inner liners into which I stuff a Little Hottie heat pad (NB. let them heat up for 15 mins before putting in your glove). Then thick Montane ski gloves on top… I know they’re not exactly cool these days but the old school flying suits from Ozee were popular back in the day too! Hope this helps…
@@TimPentreath this is so helpful.. Thank you. I'm not a fan of going down the heated gloves route myself, so your ideas on hand testing will definitely be researched. Thanks Joris, glad you enjoyed it. On my right brake is a Pryme PTT to use with Zello app (not that I’ve used it very much). On my left hand I use the Zoot headset/PTT for a normal 2m radio, which I can highly recommend. Edit - I’ve just realised I wasn’t using a radio on that flight so no PTT on left hand!
Haha, that's just the inflatable bit at the front of the Weightless (which I tried for a few flights before going back to my Lightness 3). Glad you enjoyed it!
That was a lovely flight across some of the best scenery this island has to offer. How did you find filming and editing with the 360 camera? Also which camera did you use?
Thanks Sam... This was using the Insta360 X3 which I've lent to a mate for most of the summer (and might sell it to him). I think the ideal set up is how Ben Kellett does it, with a GoPro on the helmet and a 360 on a pole attached to the carabiner but it's a lot of kit to lug around, and I'm not sure I've got the patience for the editing... Having said that though, editing this one wasn't too bad because I mainly only had the camera running when I had something to say, but the problem if you record the whole flight say, is that Insta Studio doesn't play any sound when scrubbing through the footage, so you have to play it at 1x to hear when you speak, which is a right pita. I suspect I'll stick to just the GoPro in future, but I'm interested in what you think of this vid vs my other recent GoPro only vids...? Cheers
I really like the timelapse shots and being able to keep an inquisitive horse constantly in shot is super useful but I couldn't see that sailplane for ages - it really lacks detail at distance. I think you're right, the talented Mr Kellett has got it down using both cameras but yeah, it's more stuff and it must be a pain to combine the feeds if you're not used to it. A single camera that combined a high definition forward lens + 360 lenses would be cool.
Epic flight! I prefer the narrower camera angle of your GoPro footage, which gives better definition of the ground for sightseeing. I still watched this whole video, though.
Another great flight Tim,wo under how the train delays work in your favour, the Gods must be smiling on you😃
Haha, thanks Russell, it was a great fun flight, and a fun trip home too 👍🏻
Beatiful flight! Its like being there myselfes. I Learn a lot just watching,

fantastic! thanks for sharing. I haven't PG'd for a few years, just about to get back into it, great & inspiring video, cheers.
Thanks Phil, glad you enjoyed it! Good luck getting back into it 👍🏻👍🏻
Fantastic flight and video Tim. You know you’ve had a good one when the retrieve takes longer than the flight. Keep them coming. 👍
Thanks Steve, you're right, this was a 7 hour retrieve after a 4.5 hour flight - the ratio is normally 1:1!
Looks like you had an epic day mate with some nice climbs! Fly safe buddy 👍
Cheers bud, it was a really fun flight! And a fun trip home too!

Cheers Ken, glad you enjoyed it! Yep, the Insta 360 X3. I haven’t used it since then - I lent it to Mike C. See you on Friday?
Lineups & tops of the Cus looked a bit wavy in places.
I don’t actually think the wind was strong enough for any wave to be formed…
Might just have been interaction between the top of the convective layer and what was above it, causing a ripple effect.
13:20 you definetley didn't need that extra height after seeing that sailplane creeping out of the cloud just before
Haha, yeah maybe one turn would have been enough…!
