I thought the fens were just flat, swampy, and boring. Wow! They are beautiful! Your video is also unique. I’ve been watching UA-cam narrowboat vids for a long time and I don’t remember anyone traveling the Lodes or even the Wash. The village of Reach was also really cool. I’m going to have to track down more vids of this part of England. Good job, good job!
Hi Jo Michael, well you sure exploring the drains today so narrow just as well nothing is coming other way lol we used to keep our boat in the Marina at upwear called five miles from anyway no hurry used to be a great pub ,but in them days it had a license till 2AM so lots of noise lol looks like you are moving all the vegetation for other to follow, looks like the drains are not used much by boats nowadays .,you are deep in the fens so quite and beautiful lots of wild life did you see any owls ?I think it’s called spot the water Michael ,shame about the wind jo never mind we read what you said but I would rather listen to you then read it ,I found this blog very interesting indeed as other boaters don’t use them ,well till next time take care keep safe, John 🥂🌹🇬🇧👀❤️👏👏👏🐕🐕🐕
What an idyllic journey in spite of the narrow canal. The water lilies, clouds and reflections in the water were fabulous. The shot of the 2 swans was my favourite and I think this video is one of my favourites of yours so far. Keep up the great photography and happy travels.
That's journey is more than a little surreal. I thought I was watching the African Queen at one point, although whilst Jo makes a passable Katherine Hepburn, I don't think Michael is going to be mistaken for Humphrey Bogart. Also nice to see George off the leash; there's something joyous about him. I assume that rather attractive bird with the long wings which you capture so well at about 23:15 was a tern of some sort. Also, those were some great skies.
You should enter that film in an arty film competition. Think it would do very well. Beautiful, atmospheric and different from the usual narrowboat journals.
I just have to tell you, George is the best dog ever. He is the reason I follow your vlog. Sorry about that but he is such a playful and loyal little guy he just seals my heart.
I had just been thinking that one would want to be fully stocked up on water, food, and fuel due to the remoteness when you mentioned groceries. Is there a silver propeller site somewhere in the Fens? Seems like an appropriate place.
Reach, such a lovely town... and to hear of it's historical commercial life, amazing ....Wonderfully Micheal... wants to literally touch each space he's been. Love his dedication. Kind of like George's obsession to his ball.
Reach isn’t a town it’s a small village, when my mum and dad moved there in the 30s my mums Nan described it as the end of the earth!,my 3 siblings were born there!.
They filmed in Sutton Bridge for that film. My family and I spent hours just watching as a helicopter kept coming in to film, ever so many takes. Part of it were children (I think) with a fire basket which we laughed at as we could see the little propane bottle. The boat looked beautiful and it had apparently arrived by lorry into Fosdyke and it was sailed round to Sutton Bridge.
Morning good folks, and George, such a happy boy with his ball. Quite a beautiful spot and the water so clear... and this is England. WOW. Yes, you guys are the adventurous types, ... generally why I hang out with you two and George... get more bang for the adventure.
Planning to 'do the Lodes' the second half of September so it is great to have a visual of what to expect. Laughed at the misspelling of Upware on your borrowed map! In another few weeks those skies will start to be full of the migrating Bewick and Whooper swans as they head to Welney Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust for the Winter. The black swans are really a sight to behold. Because it is such a long drag to get from the Grand Union Canal to the Ely Ouse - via the Middle Level - few boaters make the journey; and hire boats only available at Ely means that those on a boat for a short time don't bother with the Lodes. If they ever open up the link between Bedford and Milton Keynes I'm sure it will be much busier. Great vlog.
Fabulous as ever Michael and Jo. Your vlogs are without doubt the most enjoyable. Btw, I took my daughter Rosalie for a days narrowboating on 8th September from March Fox marina and I was telling her about your vlogs and lifestyle. I could hardly believe it when I recognised Michael’s hat and beard. Of all the canals in all the world you were travelling on ours, the old Nene. I shouted hello and Jo was filming us on her cell phone. Made my day. Such a coincident. Rosie thought I was “starstruck” Love to you both and of course George.
Hah, well lovely to see you and Rosalie! Obviously the videos are a wee bit behind us, but if Jo was filming watch for that one in a couple of months! M
I don't own a boat, and I don't live anywhere near that part of the world you have passed through. But after viewing this episode I feel compelled to go visit Reach, and then walk along the banks of those loads. Thank you for sharing the resplendant beauty and tranquility of travelling at about 2.3 miles per hour.
I have the most disagreeable morning, with admin and the lack of interest from firms towards a customer. This blog has thrown that away and given the best feeling. Thank you both so much.
Such unspoilt beauty and so many boaters have no idea what could be waiting for them. Thanks to your "pioneering" blogs maybe others will be enthused to follow your searching for the "mother-lode". Sorry, I should have resisted that pun but it got away from me. That journey with the perfect accompanying music was so very relaxing, for the mind and the soul. Just 'perfick'! Thank you also for the trip into Reach. Wow, those graphic signs. Stunning artworks in themselves. Please share more of these cities and villages. Watching from Downunder it gives me an insight into the wonderful English way of life. Take care, stay safe and well. An extra pat for the delightful George.
Magnificent. The true essence of ditch crawling. Such a contrast to the over crowded canals, 'K n A in August' : definitely on my to do list. Thanks guys peace at last.
Quite simply beautiful, one of my favourite vlogs, the music chimed perfectly with the scenery, captured wonderfully by you two. Just the tonic I needed, thanks for sharing your adventures with us. Take care you three.
You reached as far as you could reach on the upper reaches of the Reach! I really needed the chuckle I got out of that one this morning! Thanks for that!
I enjoyed that. You were brave to go through those reeds, glad you didn't get stuck! It reminds me of the Norfolk broads but with less boats. Thanks for doing what you do and stay safe 🙂
Sometimes it takes a different view to realize what a beautiful place I live in. I use the areas all the time for dog walking a cycling even use the tow path for chores in Cambridge to avoid extortionate parking costs. You don’t realise how special it is when you see it all the time. Thanks for the reminder. I live in Stretham between waterbeach and Ely. I am lucky and next time I go out I will have my eyes open. Thank you.
I had to watch this vlog twice as I was so inspired by its content I will definitely hire a boat and retrace your mini voyage. The amount of times I've traveld the road from Cambridge to King's Lynn across the Fens and thought to myself I'd love to explore the fenns by boat Thank you for inspiration
Charlie Allnut and Rose battle through the reeds. But they reach Reach. Just a lovely cruise and I really wish I was on board with you. And with me being an amateur Bird watcher it would have been heaven. I'm sure I saw a Common Tern. Thanks, guys. All the best. Stephen
My parents had there boat mored at Upware marina for 20 odd yrs but we never took the boat up the lodes, so Thankyou for vloging them. Looking forward to you going up to Bedford and the end of the Navigation. I spent my whole childhood on this river network.
Nice video. After watching the River Lark video I decided to do the River myself. Peaceful and scenic. Am moored up on the GOBA pump house. It's lovely here. See you soon and I'll pass my carvings to you when I catch up
Great to see you cruising our local waters. We visit Wicken Fen regularly to walk the dogs and enjoy the fens and lodes. We were there only last week and walked along the Burwell lode from the lift Bridge to the moorings next to Wicken lode. There were 2 boats moored at the Wicken moorings and we commented that you might have had a problem finding a spot at that beautiful mooring. Keep up the great vlogs and hope we may bump into you again one day. Barrie & Margaret (Rusalka)
So lovely to see you in our area, we have lived here over 50 years and love it. We have walked down many of the loads and Wicken fen is a lovely spot. Had we thought we could have come and said hello still perhaps another time. So glad you have enjoyed your time in Cambridgeshire it’s a lovely place to live. Pat and Peter
What a beautiful place, no wonder you are enjoying the Lodes, the reeds and lilies are gorgeous, the narrowness and high reed beds so enticing and remote, but I wouldn't want to meet another boat there!
Beautiful vlog! I loved it! Thanks for the link. So peaceful to watch and the music with it just lovely. At one point Perseverance looked like it was floating across a field of reeds as it was so narrow you could not see the water, absolutely brilliant. Thank you for taking us along with you. You could see George was enjoying it all as well. Mission accomplished!.👍.
23:20 Tirrick!!! (Arctic Tern) I lived in Shetland for over seven years and Tirrick is the local name for the Arctic Tern. They're incredibly fierce during the breeding season, as I discovered while taking a walk along a beach on the island of Unst (the most northerly inhabited island in the UK). Didn't expect to see one in Cambridgeshire.
Idyllic stuff in a demi-paradise! And such wide views that seem to go on forever! I was also thinking that you've left the best to last! Thank you very much for this, really special.
Your videos are so professionally done now. The music is beautiful and your narration over the top whilst travelling is great. I think I'm upto 180 on your earlier videos and then I watch each new one when I see it uploaded. I absolutely love your earlier videos but this one could be picked up by a travel channel, it's brilliant.
Lovely video, one to take the stress out of the day. Such a relaxing music track, leaning back in my chair I was almost snoozing in the well deck with a cold one. Bu99er there's another email! Back to reality.
What an absolutely stunning vlog in every respect! Beautiful scenery complemented by a perfect selection of music. I really think that the fact that it doesn't see much boat traffic is half it's appeal. Imagine encountering someone coming the opposite direction on the Reach Lode!
When you want to take NB on every yard of navigable canal, then that is what you have to do. Love the Fens: March has been our home base for the last 30 years, when we visit UK. Whickham Fen is a great place to visit.
The lode needs some kind of signalling system to warn boats that another boat is already one the lode, as you wouldn't want to meet an oncoming boat in those narrow waters!
I love the Fens and really enjoyed your take on them. You could thatch the boat with the reeds you collected. I particularly like how you go to out if the way, less visited places. Music has improved, too. ☺
Wow what a beautiful place and wonderful video of it! I've grown to appreciate the flat marsh I live on for the gorgeous sky and birds, and it looks like you got the best of it there too :)
Hi folks, I've just subscribed. I've only done the fens once, but would love to do so again, but on a wider beamed hireboat. We did a couple of the offshoot rivers, but I didn't know where the junction for the lord's was, so did'nt do them. Having now watched this vid, it looks like the Burwell load is doable in a wider beamed boat, Reach lode is definitely a no no though. A really interesting and informative vid, thanks for posting it.
Reach looks much worse than it is… you’d be pushing reeds aside, but there was quite a bit of water still either side of us… still don’t think you’d want much wider than 10 feet, maximum. M
One of my favorite pieces of music is Ralph Vaughan Williams “In the Fen Country.” I’ve listened to it for 55+ years, but I’ve never been able actually visit it. Thanks for this vicarious trip.
I really enjoyed the piano music in this vlog! Very restful, and goes well with such a beautiful area! Another one of Jo's favorite places that you've gone! Cheers!
Fully Loded was stunningly beautiful. You both captured some fabulous footage of the wildlife and scenery. Well worth the trip and Reach (city) was very pretty. Thank you for making the trip and showing us just how wonderful this area is.
The Fens looks truly beautiful. Thank you for sharing.
Hey are really something spectacular, especially when as overgrown as they were when we got there. M
Unfortunately YT only lets me give this vlog one like. The isolation and tranquillity is stunning.
It’s was definitely a highlight for us!

Brilliant episode and excellent shot of the tern. Shame there was only one because one good tern deserves another.
Haha. Thank you. Yes. It was a good tern.
20:12 Best line ever: "Earth-moving digger thing." Nouns. Just gotta love 'em.
Haha, they should officially be called that in my opinion!
Commonly known as a "Swing Shovel" in my part of the world. Which sort of sums up exactly what it does.
What an idyllic journey in spite of the narrow canal. The water lilies, clouds and reflections in the water were fabulous. The shot of the 2 swans was my favourite and I think this video is one of my favourites of yours so far. Keep up the great photography and happy travels.
Oh wow. I’m so glad you enjoyed it so much. It’s was such an amazing trip it was hard not to make a good video.
Fell asleep somewhere past the middle (such soooothing music!) and woke up to maps and earrings! Had to come back and see / hear what I’d missed.
Heh, glad we could get you some rest!! M

The bird was a Tern. Possibly an Arctic Tern. They are fabulous when they hover :). Great video. What a lovely place. Ian
They really are something when they lock onto a fish! M
Fens are lovely, thanks.
Love the music choices.
Thank you
This is just one man’s opinion, but this choice of music paired with your shot composition…is glorious. Such good work.
Thank you, really nice to hear! M

I loved Michael's 'Reach'y piece to camera, LOL. What a beautiful episode. And of course George surpassed himself in cuteness.
Shh, don’t encourage him! Lol!
Reach, such a lovely town... and to hear of it's historical commercial life, amazing ....Wonderfully Micheal... wants to literally touch each space he's been. Love his dedication. Kind of like George's obsession to his ball.
Some call it dedication, I call it a bizarrely stubborn need to assuage my own curiosity! M
Reach isn’t a town it’s a small village, when my mum and dad moved there in the 30s my mums Nan described it as the end of the earth!,my 3 siblings were born there!.
Also getting flashes of Lyra and the 'Gyptians heading to Ely in Phillip Pullman's Dark Materials.

Thanks for coming along.
A happy cruise, beautiful landscape and heroic skies. Nice filming! Those wide meadows and flat horizons remind me of Holland.

I love the Fens and really enjoyed your take on them. You could thatch the boat with the reeds you collected. I particularly like how you go to out if the way, less visited places. Music has improved, too. ☺
Beautiful countryside I had never seen before, and I never knew about the Lodes. I've put them on bucket list now. Thanks.
Definitely a bucket list destination!
Wow, that was a bit different ! Jo you and George are so fit to walk so far. All the best xx
It’s a wonderful area!
Good thing you like to walk ... and CAN !!! I like to walk but can't for long
That's my situation too ... Jo gets all the walks in, and my foot just throbs in sympathy! M
Wow what a beautiful place and wonderful video of it! I've grown to appreciate the flat marsh I live on for the gorgeous sky and birds, and it looks like you got the best of it there too :)
Yeah, it is a really stunning area. And it turns out that flat doesn’t mean bad
Do your plans include taking the boat onto the norfolk broards?
No. That would involve putting it on a truck. Probably easier to hire a boat there . Maybe one day
Omg .pocklington canal again !!!. Berwell .that house, what a place to live .loved your vlog as always .x

Thank you. It’s so nice to hear you enjoyed it!
One of my favorite pieces of music is Ralph Vaughan Williams “In the Fen Country.” I’ve listened to it for 55+ years, but I’ve never been able actually visit it. Thanks for this vicarious trip.
You’re welcome. That’s such a lovely comment!
I really enjoyed the piano music in this vlog! Very restful, and goes well with such a beautiful area! Another one of Jo's favorite places that you've gone! Cheers!
Yes, it’s definitely in my list of new favourite canals
Fully Loded was stunningly beautiful. You both captured some fabulous footage of the wildlife and scenery.
Well worth the trip and Reach (city) was very pretty.
