The thought is not to turn India inward. Infact we Indians also realise that the world need us and so do we need the world. But more emphasis is on that somehow we are systemically forgetting our Indic roots in the process. If we successfully get detatched from our roots, we will not have anything unique to give to the world rather Indianised input of western thoughts. This will not add any value to greater global cooperation.

I really sympathize with people having to learn another language. I spent 5 years trying to learn French and was useless at it. However I would remind you all, that once upon a time it was Latin that was the dominant language and everyone including the British had to learn Latin. It is about finding a means of mass communication and many people agree that English is one of the easier languages to learn. Most people in Britain learn one other language in school and many learn two, so maybe we could quit playing the victim.

English is the international language of business, that’s why it’s taught pretty much everywhere. The British Empire stemmed into every timezone-every corner of the globe. Air traffic controllers all have to speak English, no matter the country. London is the financial capital of the world and the business capital of Europe. Learning English greatly improves your job prospects in both business and trade. You can be bitter about it all you like, but it isn’t going to change anything. Like it or not, the British Empire was greatly beneficial to the overall evolution of mankind. It wasn’t seamless or perfect or bloodless but it did do a lot in establishing the values and principles we live by today: Democracy, trial by jury, human rights, freedom of speech, expression and religion. It was that recourse that ultimately gave minorities a voice, to stand up and be heard. If you had a scale with one side containing all the negative aspects of the British Empire and the other all the good… the latter would greatly outweigh the former.

@k r Yes, Prakrit was only used by commoners. That is why Mauryan kings wrote their commandments in Prakrit to ensure common people with little to no education could understand. Sanskrit was still primarily used for official and academic purposes(and not just by people of Brahmin lineage) throughout ancient India. And Buddhist monks too have written in Sanskrit. Some of the early texts of Buddhism are in sanskrit and are available in Tibet. Later on Buddhist monks used Pali, derived from Prakrit.
All of them are equally Indian, have same origin, but used in different contexts in different eras. All originated from vedic Sanskrit, an earlier form that existed before the sanskrit we know of today.

India like Greece, Egypt, Persia, Mesopotamia, Phoenicia, and other civilizations of the Near East was already civilized by themselves. My wife and I were educated in India. We went to "English medium" schools in Bombay before it reverted back to Mumbai. We emigrated to the USA.
We speak English well enough in the USA to elicit comments of awe and astonishment from Americans who listen to us if they must... Many are desirous to hear more !
My wife who is Maharashtrian speaks very fluent Marathi, Hindi, Gujarathi, Bengali, German, and English... I was born in Bombay, and have the good fortune to speak the language of my parents: Malayalam, also Marathi, Hindi, can comprehend Tamil, Guajrathi. Our multilingual background gave us the facility and poise to be at ease in any corner of our incredible globe. We have traveled to almost all parts of the world.
An excellent command of the English language will be an asset to anyone in the world of today. Yes indeed, the knowledge of the English language helped my wife and me make a very decent living in India before we emigrated to the USA. Our multilingual background was very useful, and instrumental in our success in India. Bombay/Mumbai is the City which taught me to deal with challenges that makes me firmly believe that any challenge that the USA throws our way will be proven to be puny, very puny, indeed!

She is not really disputing the use of English in India. Nobody is against that. What she is highlighting is the fact that English is the medium of instruction in most states and anyone not having access to good english schools are left out of the high end job markets.
fluency in mother tongue should not equate to country bumkin. That mental colonization of equating anyone who does not speak good english with lack of education is prelevant in most parts of the country. That should stop.
English should not be the gatekeeper for upward mobility and social mobility. That always leaves the poorest people at a dis advantage.

When children are told to innovate before learning the basics, their innovations end up trivial. Much of what passes for educational theory on innovation these days is intellectually sloppy crap. At any rate, when young children are encouraged to innovate without having a disciplined background of knowledge, it's like waiting for that copy of War and Peace that some think will eventually emerge from millions of chimpanzees banging on typewriters.
-- Personally, I lost some respect for Palki tonight after listening to this. I used to think she was strong and forceful, but now I see her more as someone who nurtures a grudge to the point where her thinking becomes impaired, and she seems to be verging toward ethno-nationalist identity politics, which is a fundamental part of racism.
-- There is an intellectual crisis in the West, and perhaps Palki isn't familiar enough with it. Feminism and Marxism have made emotionally-self-indulgent, grudge-nurturing ways of thinking into an ideology, and when one extrapolates this self-indulgence into a compounding accumulation, it produces a lot of mental illness and psychotic politics, as evidenced in leftist outbursts in the U.S. and in other Western countries currently.
-- English is the language of business, science, and aviation in most of the world. Does Palki think that India would be better off in world affairs if they abandoned it? Just adjust your history books to include the people who were left out, and relax. India has a distinct identity in the world, even if Palki doesn't feel that her little corner of it is distinct enough. But if everyone in India indulged their personal identity grudges like she does, before long India would be breaking up into regional conflicts and the castes would return.

@@grizzlygrizzle "But if everyone in India indulged their personal identity grudges like she does, before long India would be breaking up into regional conflicts and the castes would return." That is for sure as that is historical India. Just like Europe. Tons of different nationalities dumped into a small region, but India has less waterways for states to be independent, so war, constant war is the actual history of India as there are not well defined geographical boundaries.
