  • Betty Fernandes suffered with back pain, fatigue and numbness in her hands and arms for six and half years after a car accident left her with three herniated discs in her neck. Dr. Sandhu, a neurosurgeon at MedStar Georgetown, recommended a minimally invasive spine surgery using the Mobi-C device, a prosthetic that would preserve the movement in her neck and finally give her some relief from her the pain.
Betty was the first patient in the DC area to get the Mobi-C device and afterwards, her back pain was gone, her headaches went away and she could sleep through the night.
"It's a chance to have my life back," says Betty.

Hi Betty! I’m 14 days post surgery. The discs between my c5-6 and c6-7 were replaced with the mobi-c. Like yourself I suffered for years and finally found a surgeon who listened and wanted to restore my quality of life. After my surgery all the nerve pain and numbness was gone in both my
Shoulders arms and fingers. Seeing you being active has encouraged me that once I’m totally healed I will be ok! God bless you!

I wonder why most people complain about numbness or damage to the arm nerves (ulnar , radial, median) I have those too but mostly tingling and stiffness in my trapezius+ scapula and rotator cuff+ huge winging and soreness even though I have herniation in those c4-c5+c5-c6 what that could indicate!!?

This information is so amazing to hear! I have a herniated disc between C6 and C7 and I have only seen one neurosurgeon and he was focusing on all of the negative things about the fusions and how it is permanent and I would never be able to do any of the same things which I found odd because Peyton Manning had a fusion and he played for the Denver Broncos for three seasons afterwards. He had horrible bedside manner but then I found out that Elon Musk had this mobi c Surgery and it was completely successful so I am certainly going to do some shopping and avoid the fusion for sure after seeing this video. I have been so afraid thinking about getting a fusion so it was amazing to watch this video the weakness and numbness in my left arm is driving me crazy

Thank you SO much! I have a herniated disc between C6 and C7 and the arm numbness and weakness is horrible. Thankfully the neck and shoulder pain went away with steroids but the surgeon I saw was horrible and only had negative things to say about effusion and I just found out about this particular prosthesis! Elon Musk had the same thing done and I will certainly not get a fusion now this is such great information!

Dr. Sandhu is a brilliant, kind and compassionate neurosurgeon. I was originally slated to see his partner as he had less of a wait to see new patients. I am an RN so naturally was inclined to ask local physicians for referrals. They unanimously stated that Dr. Sandhu is worth the wait. I could not agree more. He has since seen several of my friends and family members. He has given me my life back!

Thats good this patient is feeling better after her surgery.i had surgery with the same dr and i have all of the same syptoms and more. But no one wanted to help me. My workers compensations was suspended because they felt my neck had nothing to do with my arms, shoulders, chest, headache, leg and pain. Dr sandhu wasnt a advocate for me nor was his staff who worked closer with workers comp then they did i. Im in the process of losing everything i worked for because of this neck injury. And no cares im scheduled for a second surgery in august after that i dont no where i will live to recovery cause my home will be in foreclosure. Ive not been able to work for six years because of this.

I just had surgery 2 levels mobi c discs replacement today. I feel numbness but no pain in my arms like before so far like before. Hopefully the numbness will go away in time. I am in the my hospital room right now and just got out of the recovery room. Sore throat but that is expected.

How is Ms. Betty doing post-op as of today? Hopefully well. Curious to know how many Mobi-C surgeries have been performed at MedStar since Betty's procedure. Have any insurance companies covered the procedure? It seems odd that an FDA approved device that has demonstrated superiority over ACDF in clinical studies wouldn't receive coverage, but I think others have found that to be true.

I was thinking the same exact thing! The first surgeon I saw was horrible and pretty much said all negative stuff about the fusion and I asked if there was any alternative found he was like nope you pretty much have to have a fusion. I was like there’s no way I’m going to put something in my neck that cannot be replaced so this is great news and knowledge. Elon Musk had the same exact surgery

Hello I recently had this surgery just yesterday on C-5 C6 667 with artificial disc replacement. Before surgery and I would bend my neck back I can feel the pinch and I will go down my alarm particularly to my index finger my index finger was numb for about six months but I could initiate the tingling immediately. And also cause weakness and pain in my arm and behind my shoulder blade and lower trap. They were like muscle spasms. I went to a very well known neurosurgeon. He remove the herniated desk I am actually on both sides the right and left on both levels and replaced with artificial desk. I am only a day out of surgery but when I move my neck partially back to the direction I still feel the tingling go down to my finger. It is fairly strong almost like it was before the surgery. The pain is much less but I still have a numb finger. I know the numbness is supposed to take time to go away but I’m concerned that I still feel tingling when I bend my neck almost like the compression is still there. Could this be caused from the post surgery inflammation and will take time for the nerve to recoup. The doctor said he did remove all the pinch points and the surgery went very well what are your thoughts? Thank you

It feels so much better. Tingling and numbness is gone. Limited motion but that is least of the worries. Are you experienced with this?
