- The Everly Brothers - Bowling Green - Demo
Recorded: MARCH 16, 1967
Producer: Dick Glasser
Don Everly: guitar
Phil Everly: guitar and vocal
Alvin W. "Al" Casey: guitar
Jay Lacy: guitar
Terry Slater: bass
Jack Sargent: drums
Glen D. Hardin: keyboards
This is one of those songs I can’t seem to get out of my head. There never was nor will there ever be two voices who harmonized like Phil and Don. They were the best.
It's amazing that so many felt the Everly Brothers were "over the hill" by 1967.
Yet Don was only 30, Phil was 28.
With the British flood of artists and the coming of The Beatles.. a lot of great Armerican singers became of some unknown reasons obsolete....like Johny Tillitson, Ricky Nelson, Brian Hyland and a lot more.... Their great music diseppeared for some reasons... Only a couple of artists survived like The unbeatable Everly Brothers, Elvis Presley.... The Everly''s were never over the hill..... But I think they were bound too much to their Roots that is the country music. If they were produncing more music like On the wings of a nightinggale and the price of Love they would been on the scene much longer... I am sure of that.... The Brothers Gibb were to me like the Everly Brothers part two But they also changed their style with every decade..... The Everly Brothers for ever !
And they had been recording artists for over 10 years, and part of a live family act even longer. Not forgetting that until the late 50's in the uk television was virtually none existent. One channel from mid day until 9.30ish pm
The Ev's were more popular in the UK than the USA, which is why the Reunion Concert was at the Albert Hall in Nov 1983, still one of my all time favourite concerts
Mike Fraser. You're right. The American music industry turned its back on the Everly Brothers and I think it's a disgrace. I don't blame them for going to London for the reunion.
Sad
Yes and I believe they said another reason was the last time they did a show with their Dad was at the Albert Hall
Rest in Peace Phil.
I just can’t get enough of this song. Any version will do but I do the love the live one from 1970. It has so much energy.
This was actually a demo done by Phil and Terry Slater in 1967 before Don and Phil did it for the Album The Everly Brothers Sing. You can find the demo on the the compilation CDs with Chained to a Memory box set issued in 2006
Correct. Terrance's original title was "London Town" and Don and Phil reworked the lyrics.
Even better than the orginal and I really like the photos with the brothers working in the studio. Let's cherish this one.
Fantastic - there are no other words required.
This is a Phil Everly solo not an Everly Brothers version. Written by Phil and Terry Slater. Wonderful striped back version from Phil. Love it.
Even demos are brilliant!
I distinctively hear Phil’s voice. Once I hear this song, I sing it constantly until I hear another one. Very nice.
Vocal is Phil solo. Both are on guitar, according to the description
my new favourite everly song...brilliant
RIP Don and Phil! This is WAY BETTER than a demo. Makes a good finished product!
Better then the released version . I can very easy do without the TSINGH TSJINGH choir :>)
On this day in 1971 {February 28th} the Everly Brothers appeared on the CBS-TV program 'The Ed Sullivan Show'...
The brothers performed a medley of four songs; "Bowling Green" {#40 in 1967}, "Mama Tried" {an album track}, "All I Have to Do Is Dream" {#1 for 5 weeks in 1958}, and "Bye Bye Love" {#2 for 4 weeks in 1957}...
R.I.P. Mr. Sullivan {1901 - 1974} and Don Everly turned 76 four weeks ago on February 1st and Don Everly was 74 on January 19th...
VERY BEAUTIFUL DEMO VERSION OF THIS BEAUTIFUL SONG ! ALMOST A GOOD AS THE DEFINITIVE VERSION ! THANKS FOR POSTING THIS DEMO HERE !
My most favorite Everly Brothers song.
Always liked this stripped down version. The whistling from Andy Griffith's THE FISHIN' HOLE must have been an inspiration. PSS I once had a fun time with a helpful woman from Bowling Green, so I can vouch for the lyrics.
Just noticed the opening picture - of Don playing sitting with his left leg tucked underneath him 😌
Nobody could harmonize like The Everly Brothers.I may be wrong but I think this was the last song they recorded together and released in 1967.
Thanks for posting it Rock1945!
This and 'YVES" are the only A sides that Phil sings lead harmony. It was written by his English friend Terry Slater.
Much better than the over produced single with the annoying "chings" !
A beautiful song .. beautifully done!
@thousandsmiles1 Great share Monika! Love it!
As someone who has moved to BG this song is spot on…
Love this one - lots.
@justmusicandme I enjoyed the video too!

RIP Don Aug 2021
Beautiful !!!
WAY better than the original version. The original is "choked" with too many instruments and silly background singers. This version is allowed to "breathe" with just voice and minimal instruments.
I agree - the live version from 1970 is better than the studio version, too.
Bothe versions have their charms ! I do not agree with you about this....
Guitar riffs must have influenced John Mellencamp's production of "Pink Houses" almost 20 years later. He grew up 3 hours north of Bowling Green, across the Ohio River, in Seymour, Indiana
Thankssssssssssss !!!
@musicman4578 this was actually wrote by Phil but put down slaters name as so not to piss off Acuff-rose
what a treat.
I loved their harmonies.
Thanks for posting this. A real treat to hear these great artistes and their talents. God rest both of them. They live forever in all their great songs. Thanks again.
I am surprised I have never heard this beautiful song before, so lovely 👌
Very nice. Phil seems more dominant in this one. Lovely pictures. Thanks, all. *****.
This is better than the album version . Less production and more natural feel. Nice shots of Don with an electric guitar .
Gibson ES 335 I think .
Cool studio pictures and it looks like Hal Blaine, the famous session drummer, was on drums on this song.

That's exactly the word required
This is a great version...where can one pick up the demo?
It's good, though I still love the hit version as it brings back memories.
Das singt doch Phil als leader. So schön. Wer singt denn im Hintergrund ? Ist das Don ?
This sounds like it's just Phil overdubbed with his own harmonies---yes? I don't hear any Don.
True! I hear the same.
Es hört sich an , als würde Phil sich selbst begleiten
Like this way better than the criminally overproduced hit version. Great photos too.
