Love the symbolism of the metronome. When Randall plays with the metronome his music sound broken and almost forced but once it was removed it sounds whole and free, which represents the DEI and how if you love with the score in mind and without taking risks you may not fully experience it
oh shit that’s a good interpretation. i was thinking the metronome simply criticizes an orderly system; this can be applied to governments and such. it restricts our self expression and prevents us from being human. the metronome also shows good character development when Randall decides to stop replying on it
yes but note that the piano teacher already has a poised and internal rhythmic sense and control. Freedom from the metronome is only freeing if there is a grounding and resolute sense of self, and a true understanding of it. Randall's struggle is that he believes his life is better within orderly systems, when in reality he suffers from an uncertain and broken sense of self, and he fears the failure that comes from lacking both the sense of self AND a system, and so is never able to break free. "I need this," he says hesitantly and anxiously. Randall's growth is that he overcame heartbreak and remembers that good relationships and good things in life come when you overcome fear and reliance on external orderly systems. He helps others find joy by breaking a very clear confidentiality rule, and he eventually finds joy himself.
I don't think the metronome is inherently restrictive or a negative character. It simply exists. It's mechanical. It is a tool that can help guide you if you lack rhythmic sense, it is there to help you develop a skill - whether you turn it on and off is ultimately up to you. Using it as a guide and then freeing yourself from it ("I know I need help"), or relying on it to provide you with a sense of structure and order as a safeguard ("I need this"), or viewing it as restrictive when it is forced upon us by others ("I feel resrained and suffocated"), these are human and personal responses that come from internal motivations, projected on an external tool.
Possibly. She could also be an ethnic Pole from or living in Russia or Ukraine. There are quite a bit of Polish minorities living in Europe outside of Poland. Or we could all be safe and vague and just call her Eastern European lol
With this type of quality content, how does WongFu only have 3+ millions after all these years?!?! Thank you again for all the hard work put into every video - I can literally say I grew up watching this channel, and also sadly going through some of the heartbreak so well captured in the many emotional videos. I can’t wait for the next feature film! #WongFu4Lyfe (Ted’s voice)
Less frequent (and higher quality) uploads are bad for the algorithm. It's likely that Wong Fu just isn't being recommended to as many people as other large channels.
I'm still always so surprised. I've been watching them since my high school days with yellow fever and they've continually produced such great videos. Definitely deserve way more subs!
I liked how the metronome was used as both a metaphor for the EI score and foreshadowing for the ending. A metronome is very methodical and should only be used as a tool before moving on to playing naturally, just like how the DEI should work (in theory). The entire time Randall was clearly not following the metronome at all, but he felt like he needed it; showing how he feels dependent on his EI score, even though it has never helped him in return. When he feels confident to play without it, he also realizes people shouldn't let their EI score get in the way of their happiness.
remuneration municipal government has been trying former prime secretary exited multiple meetings wants someone else members depending upon how they do their jobs and they haven’t seen the situation at all but they haven’t seen the other one
I was hoping it came down to that cheesy call back to her answer like "what are you doing here?" "listening to my heart", but the silence and smile hit so much better
the metronome and piano represent love and the DEI. Just like how the metronome restricts Randall’s ability to play the piano, the DEI restricts Randall’s ability to love. Other example is how Randall grew to resent the piano for a long time which symbolizes how Randall grew to hate love and the pain it brings. Overtime, he eventually began to play the piano which means he began to open his heart for the opportunity of love. Only when he masters playing the piano Randall has truly understood love.
I’m a patreon so I’ve seen it already. This short was just the icing on the cake for the movie. Just brilliant. Wish we got more shorts from this story world.
The symbolism of the piano playing is so good. Randall playing with the metronome and his mannerisms irl is all by the book and Eskra is through just emotion. So powerful got me crying in the club😭
I love how they used music as a theme to represent not just people’s different personalities but how love isn’t something that can be expressed with words or notes: it’s something that is felt!
Oh my gosh. I just rewatched Everything Before Us last night and one of my first thoughts was "how dope would it be if Wongfu did a backstory on Randall". Then I opened youtube and this was suggested. My heart is happy.
I am glad you guys actually listened to your audience thoughts about "Everything before us". This heroic move from Randall really proved that he deserved his own short movie to explain the situation more. Love y'all! ❤ been a big fan for years! ❤❤
Yes! Desperately needed Randall Park character development haha 😂😂 In all seriousness, his role in Everything Before Us was very underutilized, so this is very welcome. So thank you :)
I'm about to see it soon and I was like,"yes! We get to see Randall's story". Thanks Wong Fu for this! I've always wondered what his story would be like.
I'm really glad this short film also exists along with Everything Before Us. It really helps round out Randall's character and explains why he made the choices he did. I wish I'd seen it sooner, but I understand why it couldn't be highlighted as part of the full film.
Wow, this video really touches deep in standardized testing in America. I come from France and have been living here in the U.S for almost 11 years and the way our school system does standardized testing is so awful. It makes people think of the same way, of doing things the same method, etc. no creativity- no leniency of bringing other mindset and perspectives to answering a question. It sucks. Our education system needs a REVOLUTION!
You see, standardized testing is broken, but it was invented to stop just that, a revolution. Standardized testing was a way to prevent fraud, populism, and establish a meritocratic society - it has succeeded in some ways and failed in another. I feel like it is not so bad, because consider the fact that arts colleges require portfolios for that reason alone.
Omg...come to China and you’ll see what real standardized is like. I lived in the US for the past 5 years and I’ve been so happy about the education system there lmaooooo 😂
Fa Tee I’m not into asian guys is how it really ended.....lol. Her smiling at the end was so dumb. She was cold the whole time. He was just a client to her.
@@sammykim9250 not really, people can have preferences. and just because they don't prefer a certain race doesn't always mean they think negatively about them. it could just be a matter of cultural differences, for example.
I bought the blu-ray CD version and the vimeo version back when it was released, but I never was able to see this because I had to working CD ports! im so glad i could finally watch it after wears of wondering what this extra randall clip was!! thank you wong fu for creating these works and for sharing them at this time. stay safe and healthy!
it could be that the characters in the backstory had more pre-development as opposed to the ones in the movie. in the movie randall had little scenes where he was in distress almost as if he was being torn down by the system
but i agree, i feel this back story had a perfect progression for such little time due to the fact that they developed randall’s character even before the release
I think it was the style too - this one was less expressive, more minimalist, showing things without much dialogue explicitly saying what they were going through, but we could still connect with that.
I love how this short was simple and yet it conveyed Randall's backstory so well without needing for there to be much dialogue. Also, George Shaw back at it again providing such beautiful music :)
Your films never stop to amaze me. You can pack so much in so little time with only few characters and few different scenes. Nothing grand but gosh, so good. Great work. And thank you.
I think that this might be my favorite short film from Wong Fu, and I've seen a majority of them! So well-written, and I love the meaning behind it. Thanks for uploading all of these for us to enjoy! :)
This episode was the most beautiful episode of the series! The little parts of Randall park's emotions built to a beautiful ending. Love the works you guys have shown! A new perspective of Love as a price, a tag which eventually shows a morale that love cannot be bought or used or have a label. Love is an emotion which one must "go with the heart"
Love contains multitudes ^^ Also, claps to the story writing/narration and film production quality. I was anxiously sitting on the edge of my seat for every scene to unfold. Top notch work :)
I loved that Randall got his own little story because in the movie, you can clearly tell something is going on with him. The little touch with the teacher checking him out only after is score was revealed was funny to see lol. Her entire demeanor changing after hearing about his score makes the little bit she says in the movie make much more sense.
A relationship only hurt so much because you deeply cared about it. To take away the risk of pain is to lessen the amount of love you pour into the relationship. The pain comes from knowing that you had something special and precious.
It's brilliant you fleshed out a supporting character in a short and had the foresight to film it at the same time! I think it shows that the worldbuilding was good and there were other facets of this DEI world to explore. I would enjoy more series set in this universe. Could people re-do the questionnaire at any time to increase their scores? Did high school students all do one when they graduate and that's their baseline?
Oh gosh... when Everything Before Us came out I was still in school, and now we finally got the backstory for Randall T-T Thank you Wong Fu for giving us an answer after all these years.
Pure genius! First, in simply 20 minutes, it tells such a compelling coming-of-age story for Randall, both emotionally and mentally. Emotionally, he first recovers from his heartbreak by repurposing his gift to his ex-gf for his personal growth (in terms of musical knowledge). Working through his internal conflicts, he stepped out of his comfort zones of following rules, by first turning off the metronome to FEEL, then by following his gut feeling of what's right and giving away a copy of the interview, and finally following his heart with reaching out to Eskra. Hence, the actions of Randall and Eskra (as well as Ben and Sara) sheds a light on how we ought to view rules (explicit or implicit) in society -- through healthy skepticism and avoiding blind faith, so we have a chance at self-discovery and purpose. Wongfu, again and as always, sends a beautiful message through a film with complex emotions. Secondly, it gives an entire backstory to Randall, not only providing context to the other film, but more importantly, shows that these characters have different experiences and lives. Consequently, it reminds us that we each are the main character of our own stories. This harmonizes with the idea that we should influence our own destiny through the decisions we make (rather than following superficial and perhaps unspoken societal rules, e.g. one should act to improve one's EI score in this film, or e.g. one should pursue wealth, fame, or approval in real life). In fact, all the characters in this fiilm and in "Everything Before Us" step out of line, following their instinct. This theme also pulls on a reminder of another WongFu short "Just Another Day".
I was actually so upset about the part where she was taking the test and answering so well but being told she was wrong lmao. Wong Fu has never failed to entertain me
Question #16: You are giving piano lessons to someone who insists on using a highly-annoying electronic metronome. The EI score test which is a tool to help you rescognize the level of your feeling in some moments, not at all. So, be yourself, be your real feeling to heal you and others. Do not let the high score to lead you to the good standard.
The score is all about avoiding being hurt at the end. It turns out that fear just stops us from living our lives in the first place. damn.

Great idea to do the Randall backstory. He seemed distressed in 'Everything Before Us' so nice to see the factors contributing to that.
