      Great to hear you enjoyed the video! If you're staying in Hallstatt or Obertraun, you could definitely take it all in within a day. However, if you're planning to head out from Salzburg on a day trip, keep in mind it's a 3-hour journey each way. While you can breeze through Hallstatt in an hour or two, squeezing it all into a single day from Salzburg might be a bit of a rush because it takes a bit to get from Hallstatt to the Dachstein Krippenstein cable car.

    Thank you for explaining all the details, it is the best video on UA-cam about these locations! I'm going to be with a car and I'm going to stay in Salzburg. My plan is to visit Five Fingers in the morning and then go to Hallstat. Do you think that is possible? I'm not going to visit the mine in Hallstat, I'm thinking about just walk there and visit the village...And what is your opinion on Skywalk? Thank you!

    • @freewalkingtoursalzburg
      @freewalkingtoursalzburg 2 роки тому +1

      Thanks for your kind words 🙏🤗 I'm really glad you found my video helpful. For this kind of day trip, having a car is helpful because you don't have to follow the bus schedule. By bus, you arrive in Hallstatt around 11am and have to leave Hallstatt around 6pm or 7pm to return to Salzburg. By car, you can reach Hallstatt in 1,5-2 hours, so you can easily do what you want if you leave Salzburg early. The plan sounds great to me. The only thing you also might want to consider is the Ice Cave or the Mammut cave. I think you could do one of the caves, the five fingers and then head to Hallstatt and see the village. It's also nice to be in Hallstatt after 6pm after those arriving by public transport have gone because it's less crowded. The Skywalk in my opinion is overrated. On the Skywalk you are above and behind the village. The view is not that great, especially if you visit the five fingers, there is no need to visit the Skywalk. I wish you a great day trip and if you have any further questions, I am happy to help. All the best, Gerhard

    • @freewalkingtoursalzburg
      @freewalkingtoursalzburg 2 роки тому

      Hello Samantha, sorry for the late reply. I somehow only noticed your comment now. I am glad you liked my explanation. I think the Ice Cave, the 5 fingers and a short visit to Hallstatt in one day can be done but you would be on a tight schedule because it takes a cable car, a short walk and a tour for the Ice Cave and then another cable car and another hike for the five fingers. If you are staying in the area or traveling by car, it can be done for sure. If you are on a day trip from Salzburg by public transport, I am not sure if it can be done because the trip itself takes almost three hours. Anyway, I hope you have an amazing trip and if you have any further questions, please let me know. All the best, Gerhard

      Hello Shane, yes, I would recommend it. I just checked. All the cable cars seem to be working but I am not sure if the Ice Cave and the Mammut Cave are open in winter since it takes a short hike to get there and there will probably be snow. The salt mines I would also recommend. They are really interesting but I would say they are not a must, if you already visit Dachstein since on Dachstein you already visit two caves. If I would have to pick between the two, I would do Dachstein. Please let me know, if you have any further questions and have a great trip!

      @@shaneguinan5404 don't worry. Most people in Vienna and also in Hallstatt speak English because these are very touristy places. For Vienna, you should actually find a lot of things to do. I would recommend taking a free walking tour to get your bearings. But even if Vienna is a big city, many of the attractions are easily accessible on foot, and it's easy to find them. The reason you can't find recommendations for things to do in Hallstatt is that the place is tiny and there isn't that much to do. If you have two nights in Hallstatt, I would recommend the salt mines. Dachstein takes a whole day but the salt mines only take a couple of hours. Other than that, the best thing to do in Hallstatt is just see the village. Here is an article on a website of mine about things to do in Hallstatt: roamaustria.com/things-to-do-in-hallstatt/

    • @freewalkingtoursalzburg
      @freewalkingtoursalzburg 5 місяців тому

      Hello, it's possible to visit the five fingers in the middle of April. All the cable cars are running because people go skiing. I believe the two caves after the first cable car are not available but the five fingers after the second cable car are. They offer snowshoe hiking to the five fingers but it should also be possible to get there without snow shoes. You could rent the snow shoes at the valley station so I would recommend to ask there, if you can go without snowshoes as well. We were there in October and there was snow but we had no problem walking to the five fingers without our normal shoes. I hope that helps and hope you will have a wonderful time on Dachstein in April. All the best, Gerhard

    • @freewalkingtoursalzburg
      @freewalkingtoursalzburg 2 роки тому +2

      Thanks for the comment 🙏 You don't need snowshoes for the 5fingers, not even in mid-December. For mountain hiking you would need snowshoes because without them, you would sink in the snow, but on the way to the 5fingers there are many people so the snow is trodden and you can walk perfectly on it with normal shoes. Hiking shoes would be beneficial to not slip but if you walk carefully, any shoes will do. I wish you a wonderful visit and if you have any further questions, please let me know!

      Hello Léa, welcome to the video! While the caves are only open from May, the cable cars should be operational. However, I just checked the website and found out that the cable cars will run on the winter schedule until April 10th and switch to the summer schedule from April 29th. Unfortunately, I'm not sure about the time in between. During winter, when there is heavy snowfall, the caves on the first stop are closed, but you can rent snowshoes to walk to the five fingers on the second stop. Although there may be less to do, I believe it's still worth taking the cable cars if you can make your way to the five fingers. As you can see in the video, it's possible if there is not too much snow. Additionally, many people use the cable cars for skiing. I hope this helps you plan your visit!

      Hello Luca, thank you so much for your kind words! With 2 nights in Obertraun you have plenty of time for Hallstatt with the Salt Mines and Dachstein with the 5 fingers. For Hallstatt you have to cross the lake by boat. I would recommend spending one day in Hallstatt and in the salt mines and another day on Dachstein mountain. There are many things to do on Dachstein and if you want to do all of them, it takes an entire day. In Hallstatt it's basically just seeing the village and taking the funicular to the salt mines. Alternatively, you could also hike up to the salt mines in about 45 minutes. I hope that helps and if you have any further questions, please let me know! All the best, Gerhard

    • @freewalkingtoursalzburg
      @freewalkingtoursalzburg 2 роки тому +1

      Hello Matan, I am glad you like it 😃🙏 that's a good question. I don't think it's possible. It might be possible, if you get to Hallstatt really early and skip the salt mines. But the Dachstein cable car is a bus ride away and then there is one cable car to the ice cave and a second cable car and a hike to get to the five fingers. Also in the ice cave as well as the salt mine you need a guided tour. The two times I visited, I had a full day on Dachstein each time and was really busy doing things. Both times I took the earliest ride up and last ride down and could barely finish the things on my list. I might be wrong. It might be possible with a well planned, tight schedule but what I would do is stay a night in Obertraun. Not in Hallstatt itself because the apartments in Obertraun, on the other side of the lake from Hallstatt, are way cheaper and Obertraun is the right direction to get to Dachstein. So I would do one full day Hallstatt and then take the boat to Obertraun to go to Dachstein the next morning. I hope that helps 😊

      Up there it will most likely be freezing, yes. But you probably get a chance to see snow which can be really beautiful. It was when were there. In the valley, October can still be warm, depending on the weather but it could also be really cold already.

    How much time does it take to only visit the five fingers and ice caves? The third package

    • @freewalkingtoursalzburg
      @freewalkingtoursalzburg 10 місяців тому

      It probably takes about 2,5-3 hours to only visit the five fingers, excluding the time to get to the valley station of the cable car. The two cable cars take about 45 minutes to an hour, I guess, because you need a moment to change from one cable car to the other. Walking to the five fingers takes about 15-20 minutes but there is not much more to do than enjoy the amazing view and snap a few pictures.

    • @freewalkingtoursalzburg

      Exactly, the bus ticket you get directly from the bus driver. That's the case with all buses in Austria. You just tell the driver where you want to go when you get on the bus.

    Can you do the 5 fingers & Hallstatt Village with the salt mine in a day? From Salzburg? Seems doable

    • @freewalkingtoursalzburg
      @freewalkingtoursalzburg 3 місяці тому +1

      If you travel by car and you leave early, you can make it. If you travel by public transport, it would be an extremely tight schedule because it takes almost three hours to get from Salzburg to Hallstatt and the last connection back leaves between 5 and 6 in the evening. I am not sure if it's possible. You would spend 1-2 hours in the village, take the funicular to the salt mines and back, take the bus to the Dachstein Krippenstein valley station, two cable cars and a short hike to get to the five fingers.

    Hallo
    How can I just visit the 5 fingers? I don't wish to visit ice caves. How much would be the cost? I am visiting in June😊

    • @freewalkingtoursalzburg
      @freewalkingtoursalzburg 2 роки тому +1

      Hey, thank you for the question. To visit the 5 fingers on Dachstein, you have to take the first two cable cars. For that you need the Panoramaticket which is €35,30 at the moment. That includes all the cable cars but none of the caves. That is a great idea. The caves are nice as well, if you have an extra 2 hours and 15 more euros to spare but if you had to choose between the 5 fingers and the caves, the 5 fingers are the must-see on Dachstein. Enjoy the trip and if you have any further questions, I am always happy to answer them.

      The cable car is near Obertraun on the opposite side of the lake. That's the exact location: g.page/dachsteinkrippenstein?share
      If you are traveling by car, it's only about 10-15 minutes driving from Hallstatt and there is parking next to the valley station of the cable car.

      @freewalkingtoursalzburg 2 роки тому +1

      And I think there is not a real family ticket but there are childrens and youths prices. The adults are €35,30, the 10 year old will be €19,40 and for the 15 year old I think the childrens price of €19,40 also still applies. That's a total of €109,40. It's expensive but worth it, if you are in the area only once.
