    I've been doing this for quite some time, and as other posters have pointed out your mileage may vary. Very often, laptops are thrown out with perfectly good battery packs. Or packs like you have shown here appear to have legitimate cells. As other posters have also pointed out, these will not work for vaping because the instantaneous current output of even four cells in parallel is maybe 2 or 3 amps at best.
    Stop cutting off the wires at the cells (you need those) and keep them as a matched set. Buy some real balanced LiPO chargers and do some real world testing of each bank of four to find any bad cells packs. If they all match in capacity, then label them and keep them paired together. Add another set of 4 in series (of equal capacity) to the first three sets, and you have the perfect stand-in for a 13.65 Vdc Lead Acid battery for backup or larger banks. You will need buck regulators for this.
    The important thing to remember is that those series sets of 4 are Matched Sets from the factory, and should be kept that way. Once you separate them from each other they can no longer be used that way.

    1) Plastic box opens better from the middle seam;
    2) Do not remove the isolating [white] ring at the positive side of the cells. Sometimes the metal that shunts parallel cells damage the isolation and contact the nearby negative shell starting a fire. The white ring helps to avoid this.

    i like how these laptop batteries look so elegant and intricately engineered on the outside,but strip away the plastic shell its just a bunch of batteries and wires and a circuit board taped together haphazardly with scotch tape by some 17 year old in a chinese sweat shop.

    Just out of curiosity, did you check if you shorted 1 or 2 cells from the first pack? Because the only reason you got 3.75 volts at 7:41 is because you did so while they're in parallel. Good presentation none the less.

    Finally someone explained the stupid wires of laptop batteries thank you man. Life saver. I just need one answer it would help me a lot as I transformed the laptop batteries into my old drill. Now say you took the laptop charger wires and plugged the plus and minus as it is right now would it charge the batteries or do you need the normal way thru the lap top to charge the batteries? So the question is does it matter how I charge the batteries as long as the pc board is connected as it was for the laptop? Please explain much helpful. Thank you 😊

    warm the pack up to 45°C en the glue is soft so the caching opens much easier.

    Gloves. Wear gloves when you're cracking cases. I've broken hundreds and sliced my fingers way too many times.
    Now that you've removed the BMS you'll need a way to balance charge each cell.
    I've found a way around that if you're interested.

  • @flick2040

    Any "glued shut" cases are a lot easier to open if you crack the ultrasonic weld with a fat chisel and some medium-light taps from something like a heavy screwdriver handle. "tap tap snap" then repeat around the whole edge and the case splits with no prying.

    I've found an awesome way to get the 18650 way cheaper. There is a site that allows you to get free/discounted products on Amazon in exchange for reviews. They often have random laptop packs for around 5 bucks. I get the packs and am still able to put out good honest reviews because I can see what cells the packs are made from and the internal solder/component quality. I have a collection of about 40 18650 all mostly LGs and I paid around $25 total

    Never stack or let 18650's that have damaged plastic casings contact one another
    Like most packed rechargeable batteries, the entire surface of the metallic canister is the anode
    You can easily cause a short of these batteries when the are still connected to one another. Especially so when in series configurations of any kind.
    Not only would you likely get inaccurate readings when testing them like you did, you may also damage the cells, and obviously, if left unattended, you could start a fire, but I'm sure you knew most of this, so consider this comment to be more so for viewers.

    For safety, use temp-controlled auto switchoff, or thin wires as melting fuses if you prefer to keep it simple. Isolated from the cells of course, or it would be even more dangerous. You just got yourself a new subscriber, and a fellow mad scientist at that.

    • @irun4fundotca
      @irun4fundotca 8 років тому

      +Anton Shorter the problem is you can buy them for $1.25 CAD each on ebay,even better in bulk ($75 for the same amount here) , this is not a way to get a savings, unless you buy used laptop packs that wont charge right cheap, and separate the one cell that usually goes wrong in one of the banks of cells , also if your building an ebike or electric vehicle you need to test each cell individually ,not just each bank ,if you dont that one cell can prevent the whole final pack to not charge right
      not an issue here with new packs of course

    I know it is a bit older video now but I noticed you did not seem to consider the electronics inside the batteries much. My question is if that electronics could be used when putting together a big battery using the notebook batteries as they are. The notebook batteries are designed with safety in mind, so the charge and discharge rates through that electronics might be ideal. So could you just hook up many notebook batteries to create one big 10.8V battery?

  • @fn0rd99
    @fn0rd99 8 років тому +7

    nice video.. but I cringe each time I see you remove one of those washer shaped insulators from the positive side.. it's there to guard against the positive tab shorting against the negative case.
    What a lot of folks dont grok is that laptop batteries are usually of higher capacity than the cheapest of the cheap ebay ones. For ultra-cheap/free batteries you can take apart discarded battery packs.. they often only have one bad cell.

    Nice video man...
    But I realy don't think that those 18650 cell will give you the amperage you want for a go-cart motor...
    Those laptop cell are designed for large capacity, not big discharge current delivery...
    You will have to parallel a lot of cells together to get the high current you need for a DC motor that can power a go-cart...
    Not to mention that those cheap replacement laptop batteries contain cheap no-name 1850 cells from china that are quite sub-par some times.
    Did you find any name-brand cells inside those packs?

    • @artisticbrit
      @artisticbrit  9 років тому +2

      Hi Bill. You are partially right, the batteries are no name but due to their weight, I can tell they are decent quality. Though until I actually test them all, I'm guessing they are around 2.2amps each. Tesla car batteries are made from about 7000 x 18650 batteries configured as one large cell. I'm making a smaller version of this for now. My son wants to assist me, so we are probably focusing on the frame design for now as we are still gathering batteries and powered wheel hubs. I have even thought about reconfiguring the hubs to create a main drive motor to focus all the power onto one axle. Though will go through all of these decisions in my videos. :)

      "Tesla car batteries are made from about 7000 x 18650 batteries configured as one large cell"

    • @mibars
      @mibars 8 років тому +1

      +Andrew Jones There are so many varieties of 18650 cells, there are even cells that can do 100+ Amps for a second or two and 20-30A continous, but this is sacrified by low capacity. On the other hand even "low current" 18650 cell can supply a lot of power, it will just sag and heat up quite a lot.

      +Gavin FreedomLover I tested the cheap no name pack cells to give about 1500mAh, brand new, 2 months old. That's like you said, pretty bad. An 18650 should be 2200mAh if anything, so those are pretty poor quality cells. Slightly better than Ultrafires that give you 1000mAh at most though. Not good for MODs since you can't have a bad cell blow on your face. I also recommend Sanyo, Panasonic, or LG. I've been using the LG 3500mAh and it's doing the best for me, lowest internal resistance, and the highest capacity of the bunch. The Panasonic 3400mAh is slightly behind it, but only by about 5%.

Can you explain to me again what about this is cheap ? Considering you yould either buy 3000 mAh batteries for like 3.50$ or work an hour and earn like 20 bucks ?

      I found a lot of these 100 ICR 18650 Batteries 3.7V for $255 including free shipping on ebay. Normally $320. I'm guessing they're the same, "CHEAP" is the operative term here. THIS IS NOT 30A HIGH DRAIN TYPE! THIS IS 2C(4A) STANDARD TYPE.
      PLEASE MAKE SURE YOU BUY THE RIGHT BATTERIES. -PKCELL.
      If these batteries are for a laptop then they're right for his build, he seems to know what he's doing. Most everyone else who builds these batteries use the green 18650's from Panasonic. They're $4.50 a piece in a hundred lot from neobatteries and they're what Tesla Motors uses, 2 billion of them. These batteries he's using must be "High Drain" and the color is confusing me. I'm on Andrew Jones side now. Buy the laptop battery cases when they're on sale and bust into them.

      Andrew Jones I used to develop land for mobile homes. I had the transporter, a tractor-trailer rig and bottle jacks and piers & pads and would tear down transport and set up homes. I'd hang and take down the axles, put the wheels on etc. I had to go to 3 different school districts to pay school bond fees, and the permits, oh man, what a flipping hassle that was, soils engineering reports. I know you didn't need my support, winners don't acknowledge anyone who tells us "no, you can't do that" it sounds more like a challenge to people like us.

      Andrew Jones My Ancheer E-bike came a week early. I took my dolly (walked it) over to the UPS store and put the bike together. It only took 3 1/2 hours to charge the battery and I went out for a night ride. People like you on UA-cam have changed my life. I can electroplate quarters making them copper, do a decent balloon monkey, and I make soaps and candles like nobody's *_business._*
      I've been wanting to make one of those infinity mirror boxes like the infinity hallway floating candelabra portion of the Haunted Mansion ride. I just figured out tonight how to use a mirror I had on hand with my dual glazed windows. I've been putting on a light show with a couple strings of Christmas lights and I have a neon sign and it worked.
      This all started for me when I bought some Chocolate Hanukkah Gelt (chocolate coins) off the discount rack for children, I bought 10 bags. I wanted to make golden coins for children. I make golden pennies with the sodium hydroxide I use for making soap.
      Sorry for so long, thanks man, your genius rubs off on people and for one I am really enjoying my life because of people like you.

    looks like 2.2 Ah / cell, at $1.60 and 3.7V that's only $197 / kWh, pretty good for over a year ago. However these are generic and just look on Ebay, there are $1 shipped '9.8 Ah' cells that reviews put at 500mAh or .5Ah which makes it low quality and a lot more expensive.
    Plus you really want individual cells for balance charging and longevity.
    The latest I know is that GM was getting quality cells from LG for 145 / kWh wholesale, that's more realistic, the best li-ion price I've heard of, and cell-only will always be cheaper, esp. in bulk. In short I don't see these cells being decent quality or close to advertised. They really need to be tested regardless of label anyways, like on a lipo / RC charger that can measure capacity. There seem to be a lot of counterfeit cells around, even an old, even new, genuine cell could be bad.

    • @gerardvandergraff7031
      @gerardvandergraff7031 7 років тому

      These appear to be LG DS3 cells (very common in laptop batteries). So these are definitely good ones, but they're low amp discharge batteries. So vaporizer mods, for instance, won't really work with these cells, but they could be good for lots of other things.

    • @charleshansen4463
      @charleshansen4463 7 років тому

      You might still not trust the label if it's from a generic pack (what I was referring to re generic)... and rest assured you are almost guaranteed to be getting a counterfeit cell on EBay if it's less than $4, and I'd highly question at any price.... if the packs were somehow direct from HP, toshiba, etc. I would of course definitely trust the cell labels... any 'OEM' online is highly suspect.
      There really needs to be a good consumer source to genuine cells at a small markup, but that may not happen for years if not decade(s). $2 / cell comes out to about a 33% markup on that ~$145 / kWh LG price. Think if all power tools, lawn tools, and about every cordless thing of moderate size just had a simple 18650 compartment with BCM for unprotected cells. There are some packs made for scooters like this, just load with cells and close up. Even car packs could be made solderless... it'd take less time putting all the cells in than laying down a penny floor in a bathroom.

    • @gerardvandergraff7031
      @gerardvandergraff7031 7 років тому

      I was just saying these in the video were more than likely authentic. HP buys direct from LG I would bet so they won't be counterfeit cells. However, I have run across counterfeit LG, Sony and Samsung batteries (last time were fake HG2 cells) that I bought for a vaporizer mod. Needless to say I wasn't happy to get 10amp cells when I bought 20amp. LOL
