It is a beautiful and luxurious train in South Africa. I did this trip in June 2017. The service was excellent and the food was delicious. It was very relaxing. We boarded at 08:00 in the morning and arrived the next day around 18:00 in Cape Town. It is expensive, but a very worthwhile memory. In June 2019, I did the Rovos Rail trip from Pretoria to Cape Town. This train travels slower, so it is a 2 night and almost 3 day trip to Cape Town, with two excursions, the one in Kimberley and the other one in Matjiesfontein. Rovos Rail is proudly South African and for sure the pride of Africa. I think each of these trains is in their own class and a very worthwhile memory. I love trains and I loved how vibrant and energetic this video was made. It brings back lovely memories.
My dad worked for the South African railways and sold the first ever ticket for the Blue Train, this was in the days before Internet and online booking.
When dressing in a more presentable way one finds that the stewards and attendants tend to be a tad more attentive. They appreciate that little extra effort a "guest" has made to match the ambiance of the train and show a gesture of respect for their hard work in providing such excellent service.😉
The answer to the silverware question is... Start from the outside... work your way in... Your server will then remove or add silverware... Depending on what course you are in... Easy.
@@DrBeah Because we don't spend stupid money on useless silverware, my generation was smart enough to realize you can use the SAME spoon for soup AND cereal, who would of thought?
Now this is the way to travel. So posh. Thank you as always for taking us along with you via your vlogs. They're awesome. Safe travels and Merry Christmas to you and yours.
That brought back memories. I had the berth with a bath in the bathroom. So, apart from all the other delights of the train, I had a bath while travelling. Between Pretoria and Jo'burg the steward gave me a tour of the unoccupied three-room suite in the centre of my carriage. In 1991, there wasn't the pre-trip lounge at the station. If I remember correctly, this train has the corridor on the western side, so that the hot sun doesn't strike directly into the compartments. I still use the Victorix pen-knife, with its Blue Train logo, which I bought in the lounge car.
OMG everything is absolutely immaculate, gorgeous and luxurious but still almost feels quaint. It's the tinyness of the train made as luxurious as possible. Would absolutely put this on my bucket list of things to do.
keep in mind, this is only one of the most luxurious trains in the world. The number 1 luxury train in the Southern Hemisphere is actually the Rovos Rail "Pride of Africa".

Nice happy friendly couple. and what a stunning train! Do you have a part 2? The most spectacular scenery would have been nearing Cape Town. The only negative comment I have is that a shabby old t-shirt looks so out of place in such a posh dinning car, like wearing shorts and sandals to the Oscars ;-)
Wow just seeing the video i felt like i’m back in the 20’s - 40’s!! This is how trains were like and the food as well!! I’m really surprised i didn’t expect these trains actually exist
The scenery is definitely reminiscent of Australia and the Kimberley hole of Mt Gambier’s Blue Lake. Looks like a great train ride though- I am putting it on my bucket list!
Interesting to see this. My trip of a lifetime on the Blue Train was way back in 1972 and apart from tech upgrades, it looks like the service back then was like this. Do they still have the shoe slide - you put your shoes in after going to the Big Hole and they're cleaned overnight? Kimberley more organised now it seems. Shame you missed out on the descent and arrival in Cape Town - very scenic.
Heard about this train but definitely got my attention after this, looks amazing! Need to add this to my list. I suggest try the Orient Express. It was the most fun because of the compulsory formal wear for the entire journey, - pack several formal wear. The party atmosphere at the bar was memorable where at the end of the evening passengers who were strangers at first were singing and dancing the night away like old friends. Only downside was the shared loo and no shower! You only have a wash basin in the room and the bunk beds config is not great if it's a romantic getaway. The Maharaja Express from New Delhi is perfect for a romantic and less formal experience. It was over the top luxury (every morning I was showered with flower petals and red carpet!), daily amazing excursions (a safari, Taj Mahal to name a few), amazing food by a renown Indian chef on board to cook whatever you want and the luxury cabin with spacious toilet and shower. The only downside is the train rocks more than any western railway and do ask for a room to the middle of the train if you want a good night sleep! The Hiram Bingham train in Peru takes you from historic Cusco to Machu Picchu is the luxury alternative to hiking to the gates of the site. While hike when you can champagne it up and back down again after seeing awesome Machu Picchu. Again fun atmosphere at the bar. I only wish it was longer. My next trip is the Canadian Rockies then back to India on the Golden Chariot. Now I've seen this video, this is now on my hit list. Thanks
I've also done the 20hr train journey from Nairobi to Mombasa (it is dubbed the lunatic express by the locals)! It was something I would NOT like to experience again but glad I tried it once before they start running the new Chinese-built railway line which will take the whole journey only 4hrs). Did feel like a lunatic on the journey. The best thing was the wildlife as it went through a national park as a very slow pace.
MaRDI Kane+ I disagree. I took that train from Mombasa to Nairobi and had a great time. What helped was my 40 oz bottle of whiskey which I shared with a Swiss doctor who was in Africa to study tropical diseases. In the morning we had a great English breakfast in a mahogany diner car with window open to take photos of the wild life. Good times.
I took this trip last year. Be prepared to see some awful slums ("informal settlements") along the rail tracks in some places. I was told many of these settlements are immigrants from outside of SA
I do not like the tipping culture, you have already payed for the service, so why should you pay extra after? What did you pay for in the beginning if not the service? I can maybe understand if they go far beyond their work describtion, but that is very rarely the case. So you are basically just tipping them for doing their job and what you have already pay for.
@@heww3960 the issue is that waiters etc... Get underpaid in the first place. Everybody is free tip or not tip, but I think that if u have that kind of money to travel and eat like they do, tipping is the least they could do in a place like south Africa.

So, I'm not sure if this is still a thing in England, so anybody, feel free to chime in, but I visited the UK a number of years ago and got First Class tickets for 8 days on BritRail, so we went to Wales, then most of South West England, ending in Penzance and taking the night train to Paddington Station, then our last train ride to Heathrow to catch flights home. But what I didn't know immediately that most larger cities had a First Class Lounge at the train stations, with concierge, free soft drinks/tea/coffee and snacks and just a kinder, gentler place to land if there was time between trains. We had a snafu in Bristol with our train being cancelled, and the concierge helped us move some things around, which was better for using our train pass anyway, but it was so graceful and peaceful to handle it via the FCL. I'll recommend that if anyone is traveling in the UK, if they still have these lounges. And in general First Class cars were well worth the extra spend. I was lucky, though, because I got a BOGO just before our trip, so it cost the same as coach.
Hey guys, thanks for taking us along - just a bit of feedback - sone of the video especially in the beginning is really choppy, shaky and out of focus - you also move around the room really quickly so its hard to appreciate and see your experience - it hurt my eyes a little - kinda like that movie cloverfield lol, but yea maybe some steadier shots and a little bit longer transitions would be awesome! Thats just me though! ❤️❤️
I'm so glad we've taken the train! Yes - let's watch a movie while we eat the free snacks - who needs to watch the scenery? We'll pretend like we're on a slow plane... Nice movie - now let's go to the dining car, I'm hungry after all those snacks.
