  • One of the many items I found at my local Military Surplus Store was an A.L.I.C.E. pack frame with minor damage. I asked the owner how much he wanted for it and he said $5.00! $5.00 for an A.L.I.C.E. pack frame! I used a drill, clamp and 3 steel rivets and the frame was as good as new!
    This video will demonstrate how to repair the most common damage which occurs to the A.L.I.C.E. pack frame.

      Josh, I had to ask one of my UA-cam savvy students what a "Chad" was. He pretty much told me in numerous words that it was an EXTREMELY HIGH COMPLIMENT! So, Josh, Thank You From The Bottom Of My Heart!

    It's great to see things repaired and utilized again instead of trashed. Great video John, take care and be safe.

    It is really satisfying to be able to bring broken equipment back into service! The rivet gun seems to require considerable hand strength.

    • @boonedockery7220
      @boonedockery7220  3 роки тому +1

      It really is gratifying James. The hand strength isn't bad at all. it just needs to be squeezed three times, however when trying to keep the activity in frame and in focus it makes it seem much more difficult than it appeared.😆😄😅👍

    Holy smokes your video just saved me a headache! I searched and searched for an alice pack to train with and found an old one for 50 bucks. I inspected the straps and sack but after buying it I found that the 4 rivets at the base of the frame were missing. Now I'm back in business. Thank you!

    I used coat hanger wire and JB Weld to repair several frames, it does not look as good, but it is field expedient! Just purchased a nearly new large od green ruck w/frame for $90. Very hard to find in 2023 thanks to great vids like this, our secret is out!

      Thank you very much! I didn't notice it while I was doing the repairs, but when I was prepping the frame for the next video (will be up Sunday) the kidney pad was a first generation model (LC-1). That frame may well be close to 50 years old. I wish that when I hit 50 all I had wrong with me was a couple popped rivets, sadly that wasn't the case...😆😄😅👍
      Sundays video will be the Load Panel installation. I really think you'll like it! Have a fantastic day!

    Now I'm wondering how to replace the rivets at the bottom of the frame, where the belt bracket attaches to the frame tube. The rivets go through the bracket and all the way through the tube. Just longer rivets? Idk. Awesome video series

      The very first repair post I ever saw on line was pre-UA-cam. The "Poster" was a combat vet from Vietnam and he drilled out and replaced ALL the rivets on his frame with steel bolts, nuts, washers and locking washers. His reasoning was that "real" use of the pack will cause most, if not all of the rivets will eventually fail. Obviously, he used his pack frames far more rigorously than I ever did. He also had the Large A.L.I.C.E. Pack on the frame. You might want to consider that before deciding. Have a great evening!

    ALICE pack and I had a very dysfunctional relationship. How I loved and hated her. She's tough as they come. Not a complicated ol gal an simple to figure out. She never let me down and I could always count on her. But brother when I over loaded her she paid me back in spades on those 10 mile force humps. That said, I still adore her to this day.

    I'm sorry but that clamp was not necessary. It is a easy fix without clamps. All you had to do is just put the rivet in the hole and finish it

    How do you replace the d ring shaped thing that the waist belt attaches to? One side of mine is missing it.

    • @boonedockery7220
      @boonedockery7220  2 роки тому +1

      Colt, I just looked at mine and it looks like a good bit of work to install a replacement. I did some searching on line and couldn't find actual replacement d rings for the A.L.I.C.E. frame. "IF" the d ring is the only part missing and the mounting bracket is open all the way through, you could slide some heavy gage wire through it and secure the ends to another single loop.
      I did a little more looking and fond a company that sells 2" metal loops. If you wanted the drill out the rivets that holds the bracket to the frame you could remove the bracket and replace the 2" loop and re-rivet it. It might be a bit of a challenge but it would be repaired properly. Here is the link to the 2" loops
