I had some comments from viewers in a recent live stream pointing out how impressed they were with my AC paint schemes, so I felt motivated to make a guide about how I go about doing it. Hey this is amazing, I didn't experiment too much with the decals and I didn't think you could do something like this just using them, thanks so helpful
I just love how mecha games bring out the hobby painter and gunpla builder in all of the community. It was a genius idea to ship AC6 with a decal editor.
Tbf, it was in a good few of the last game instalments, so it would be disappointingif it didnt ship with it. Just nicer that they expanded on it a hell of a lot more so we can have more creativity with it.
@dairiskuznecovs7233 I understand why. Coop play is difficult to pull off. I also believe after beating the game once it wouldn't of had the intimate feeling they were going for in the story. I think this game is better off without coop, as much as it would be really fun or cool.
My dad was so upset when I was Kittanning as a kid, in the early 90s before I knew the name. But when he saw the end product, he showed everyone my custom cars. My big issue with decals in ac6was the hiding of the part detail, this video made me both feel dumb for not thinking of it, and excited to go detail out my mechs. I've spent about 200+ hours on this game and only 70 in gameplay. It brings me back to my custom forza car days and it's way better, because, mechs. I do struggle with the way the decals fight the shape of my pieces, I want to figure out a good fix, I made a 3d carbon mesh for my lightweight ac's but it takes hours to line them up so in close inspection they look cohesive and correct, but also distort them to flow on the curvature of the part. I'm going to see what other videos you have, I appreciate this content.
Good to see you still making content after all these years Emarrel, your Souls videos are still some of my all time favourites. Can't believe it's been over 10 years.
I love this kind of thing so much, because the customization in AC6 is obscene on the face of it, but creative things like this really make the mechs feel lived in and real.
With these tips I was really able to make my CAT forklift emblems on my mech alot more weathered and realistic looking. Increasing the style of my forklift build by alot! Thanks man
I freaking love that wasp design, this looks so freaking good! Would you mind sharing the ac data or smth in that regard? I must have it, its stunning work!
Good tips, another good thing to note for when working on an emblem or decal is gradients they can really make your images and colors pop or fade nicely.
@@MoonlitEmbers010 well adding a soft gradient on the large shape or detail you're working with then slapping smaller brush presets with the opaque base color of your mech in a slight gradient shade can work. But it's too much work if you aren't willing to go the extra mile
I don't even play this game, and as far as my bank account is concerned I may never will, but this really takes me back to all the Gundam customs I'd gaze in awe at, savouring the several samples of artistry. It's like all those years ago, but digital. Nice video. I'm jealous.
One of the joys in this game is really detailing your mech, and utilizing the photo mode - it’s phenomenal and almost like a secondary game (albeit photo mode being flawed slightly as it’s missing a few things). Thanks for the tips.
These look spectacular, and the guide is well written and presented. A strong and flexible cosmetic system like AC6's will add so many hours of enjoyment to player’s purchases.
You started my design adiction when you released this video! my AC i completed the story with was inspired by your AC. Now i will revisit the wasp theme and do a sick wasp build with the stun gimuns and the atun batoon!
I don't own the game yet, but your video makes me want to stop waiting and go for it ! Thank you for this video, very instructive and digest. Cheers mate
Great tutorial! I've been enjoying my Super Shiny Robots™ quite a lot, but I've been meaning to try something a little more realistic. This guide is perfect for learning how to do that, thank you!
Decals and image editor have been my favorite things. It reminds me off furnishing gunpla. With decals you can make the head part way cooler, like giving a pair of eyes and giving a lot of detailing by using ink (it's so similar with masking in Photoshop)
I really appreciate this video! Been in kind of a rut trying to figure out how to adequately weather my decals and stuff and some things came in handy. Thank you! :D
Emarrel! Good to see you around still. I still remember you were my first ever PvP fight in DS2 and one shot me with Flame Swathe. I always watched your Souls stuff. It has been so long! Thank you for such a useful guide.
Thank you for this, i never liked the idea of my AC being super clean with all the dirty gritty melee combat I've been doing (or just the aesthetics of the world and who we are). I had to make do with trying to make oil/blood stains on the Lance/Pile and it just wasnt working out, so these codes are going to be a major help to that.
I just spent awhile working with the reflectivity and weathering and paint on my 3 favorite ac builds after getting through ng++. I made one that looks like the endless waltz Heavy Arms and what was missing was the weathering on the line decals on its arms and chest and changing the reflectivity down on the whitish grey parts. By the way I love your "Yellow jacket" Schneider AC that's wonderful.
Fantastic guide. @5:48 Please for the love of Rubicon explain how you went about painting those individual sections so cleanly. I've tried my hand at it and I just couldn't get it to look good and clean. Doesn't help that theres no mirroring option. It just feels so unwieldy. I wish they had given decal placement the same controls the image editor has.
A very good guide, even though I personally like my bots squeaky clean with minimal blemishes. I like to imagine flying through an AC Wash/Nano detailing system after missions to keep up appearance.
I don't think it would be easy for FromSoft to allow the weathering to affect the decals at this point. It's baked into the textures in the first place. So this guide is extremely handy to overcome a problem that likely won't ever be solved in a patch. Thank you !!
I never actually noticed decals being placed on top of weathering. That seemed like an odd choice. They could have at least added a switch to toggle whether or not you want weathering to be applied over decal layers. It's cool that the decal system is flexible enough to handle that part though. Finding out it was possible to do negatives/masks opened up a whole can of worms!

As a concept artist, I appreciate the design tips on paneling and consistent detailings you mentioned. Thank you for the vid !
I gotta say, that hornet paint job is certified-FRESH 🐝
This is just straight up GENIUS! The reason i don't use any detailing on my AC, is because the texture look weird, but this fixes it.
If AC6 can retain a dedicated fanbase, I can literally see Artists getting commissioned to do some Armored Core paint jobs and emblems.

Applying tarnished (heh) pattern over coloured decals is such an underrated tool to give your AC a rugged look, really feels like a real mech!
