Thank you both. I expected to enjoy this. And at 77 living among wave after wave of Russian (and other) refugees stretching back to the 1920s in Washington Heights, NYC, I am not totally ignorant of contemporary events in the old Imperial land mass. But this discussion has added an additional dimension and point of view to my understanding of the complex power relations and social interactions of the elite near the pinnacle, sharp end?, of the vertical of power. Even tho I know better, I still unconsciously revert to the assumptions of the era of the collective leadership and the existence of Russia, and the Soviet Union, as a continental power with a diverse economy which, with all its flaws, was able to initiate effective space programs (lofted with superbly effective, cleverly designed, relatively inexpensive, booster systems that, as the stock is being run down, have not really been exceeded. For all its flaws, the Soviet system produced the spectrum of goods supporting a modern economy, tho only a few key items may have been of world class quality. For example, the Soviet Union had a large industry producing chip designs and chips, at least into the early 1980s. The military wouldn’t have needed to smuggle in chips used in washing machines and microwave ovens to build controllers for munitions!
Put simply, it is hard for me to believe in my bones that Russia has morphed into a petro state exhibiting some of the most devastating characteristics of the same. I can’t even run Keynesian projections (or semi Friedmanite analyses of the effects of money supply changes) of the true macroeconomic effects of a wartime economy. (This should be a no brainer given the historical experiences of both the US and Soviet economies in WWIi, as well as later in the US during the Vietnam and USSR during Afghan war on top of Cold War.
Combine the hollowing out of the civilian economy and domestic production with the mind bending, incomprehensibly vast, corruption seemingly amounting to at least several years GNP over the last thirty years and Russia has been reduced to a secondary, primary goods producing, power to be regarded seriously in international diplomacy mainly because of its nuclear arsenal, its supposed ability to blackmail the world/Europe through petroleum embargo (now much reduced) and its ability to bribe/seduce, pay off power elites through licit and illicit payments of cash or questionable business dealings.
These are not the realities of a true great, continental, power such as China, which, India, and the United States. If there is a (poor) comparison it might be Australia, with 4 times the population, or Chile, either ten times the population. Both large nations with great deserts and underdeveloped industries, with strong colonial histories determining the core elements.
At first glance, Mexico might seem to be a better comparison, a very large territorial extent, a semi petro power and primary metals producer since the 16th century (with a colonial economy into the 20th.)Today, Mexico has about the same population as Russia (130 million) almost the same nominal GNP per capital (about $15,000, though Russian PPI-buying power-is about $10,000 higher (20s vs thirties). Yet those appearances would deceive. Mexico, even as a junior partner of North American economy, has a far more diverse economy (though lacking the Russian dark earth agriculture, or Iowa, Kansas, Mississippi Valley wheat, corn, soybean agricultural cornucopia) has a far more diverse economy. A large and growing industrial sector with currently booming industrial investment (a good deal due to production facilities moving out of higher wage China (?) pretty good infrastructure, tho too concentrated in several North South Zones, large, reasonably well educated labor force. And most of all,!economic and social stability relative to President Xi’s new, somewhat lawless, Chinese autocracy. There is a rule of law in Mexico, hardly perfect but one that can be reasonably counted on, certainly by large corporations. Likewise, personal freedoms are generally respected, with exceptions, true, but nothing like Russia. Judiciary, even with recent reforms, is more independent than not. Taxes 15 pc of gnp (petroleum) admittedly too low leaving public services starved of resources and vulnerable to bribery and extortion. Still, all in all, a nation with a thriving, if start and stop a bit, economy moving towards much more balance and a prospectively brighter future. Not a primary goods producer economy but more of a finished goods. And if I had a choice between the common market with the EU and with the United States, with all its problems, I would choose the United States and Canada, as at present.
My point stands in this lamentably huge digression? I now realize that even before 2023, or even the 2014 sanctions, Russia was facing severe economic contradictions without the structural ability,
Much less the understanding and will to confront them. Even pobre Mexico, on the other hand does recognize some of its problems and has been struggling politically and socially for decades to address them, however imperfectly.
    Two other points.
    1. Mexico doesn’t have much of an army (about 0.5 pc of gnp budgeted every year since 1980). Mexico has never had great power ambitions, tho its nominal resources aren’t that different than Russia’s)
Russia currently (2023) devotes at least 10 pc (Kennan Institute estimates 9/23) Of nominal GNP to all military expenditures ($1,500 per person out of $15,000). Mexico is devoting those funds to other purposes, mainly private thru low taxes. 😢😢😢
    2. Mexico receives about 5pc of its gnp from remittances of citizens working abroad: second in the world in gross amounts ($63 billions) after India. While this amount was inflated due to Covid (to the largest earner of foreign exchange) foreign family connections serve as a partial economic net for about 1 in 20 Mexican families, even if absolute numbers fall with the fading of the epidemic.
For Russia, remittances were primarily transfers of an individual’s own funds amounting to $6.5 billion in 2021. Current sanctioned amounts are unknown.
    4. Tourism earnings. Mexico, 8 pc of GNP. 4 million employees.
    5. Demographic pyramid for Mexico will provide a much larger work force in Mexico for the future than in Russia, which has suffered severe drops in birth rates during economic and political crises over the last 40 years. Thus Putin regimes almost insane focus on natalism in recent months. Only possible escape for Russia appears to be the facilitation of immigration, which the regime appears to abhor for xenophobic reasons.
I apologize for the length of these tip of my head remarks, typed with one finger on an old cell phone, sparked by your discussion in the stream. Apologies for typos and incoherencies.
I guess the discussion jelled my feelings that the world power pretensions of the Russian Federation were just crazy. Then the comparison with Mexico, where I lived and studied many years ago popped into my mind. In some ways, Mexico has more world power resources than Russia. It only lacks the Soviet legacy store of spottily maintained armament passed on from the Soviet Union’s, plus the inheritance of nuclear arms.
I realized that even Mexico is more capable of building up an arms industry than Russia, not that it has any desire to waste its substance in such an endeavor.
Speaking of continental nations states, while India is on the verge of great power status, and certainly has the resources and perhaps need, Brazil is the other entry. 200 million persons, a diverse industrial economy, significant energy sector, continental extent.
PLUS: a significant and growing niche arms industry as well as a large respected civilian aircraft industry . You really need planes to get around Brazil, almost like Russia.
    Oh
Well thank you again. At least I got out some thoughts I didn’t know I had.

@@halporter9 Typed from a phone, impressive. But cojent and I read it.
I can't respond fully from my old phone, but...
My education was initially in the biological sciences and possibly over influenced by them. In this I draw a parallel between humanity and a population of bacteria. While we are proud of our nominal intellect, viewed from a distance, we have exploited our environment using what tech we have to exceed its previous carrying capacity. Nationalist or economic machinations serve only to rearrange the deck chairs if that tech fails. As it must when growth exceeds resources and the carrying capacity returns to its previous value. I watch with interest to see how our species as a species does or doesn't go extinct via the actions of very few of its members.
We think we're very clever, God laughs.

      @@dhill4001 great metaphor and comparison.

    • @dhill4001

       @halporter9
I never met a phor I didn't like. (I would put a smily emoji here except I don't know how and refuse to learn (again))
And it is fair to take my description as a metaphor, yet, I write from within my worldview in which bacteria and humanity represent two instances of a common descriptor. If one uses the Schroedinger definition of life being 'a replicating system which can focus a stream of energy on itself with the result being a maintenance or reduction of local entropy," then both the bacterial colony and humanity constitute living organisms. As such they are capable of Darwinian evolution (the NASA definition of life) with the end states being, survival and expansion, survival and contraction, stasis, or extinction.
Both the bacterial colony and humanity fit this definition and, in my mind, are equivalently stupid and effectively make decisions which could be viewed externally as mal-adaptive and likely leading to extinction. The bacteria eat up necessary nutrients until the colony fails for their lack and humanity chooses to (pick one or more) nuke ourselves, pollute enough to make our environment not survivable, create new lethal chemical replicators, AI systems which can 'accidentally' kill us all.
In the meantime, I'm having fun. I'm younger than you, tho by less than a decade, and I don't expect to see the end game, In short, I think we're screwed so enjoy whatever time is left.

So much knowledge and understanding between the two of you! His work will be published in the history books! Thank you to the two of you! Slave Ukraine

Another stellar guest! Appreciate DarthPutin's cutting sarcasm. It brings me valuable moments of levity in these dark times, when it often feels like the whole world forgot what truth even is.

Thank you for getting up each day and applying yourselves to informing us. Thank you for facing up to the relentless grind and giving us hope against the self-centred, self-absorbed autocrats or would-be autocrats who have no stop button for indulging themselves at our expense. This selfishness leads to millions of people dying or having their lives ruined to no good purpose.

Love Darth Putin. I've listened to their podcast and was pleased to realise he is both knowledgeable and an interesting thinker. But then, you can't be as dryly witty and on point as the Darth Putin if you're not smart and know your stuff.

Unique insights and point of view. Style of Humor illuminates so much! Brings to mind of the dark, satirical humor of the Soviet era in Eastern Europe. Style is very different of course than short jokes or stories, but the kernel of the spirit of observation and expression seems very similar.
