I had to comment again; this song has bring tears to my eyes. Keep walking on the sunny side of the street. Many of us hurting today but we will make it.
The music from this time period is fabulous and nostalgic. The musicians were excellent and very talented. I wish music like this was still written and performed. It was a fantastic time period in music and history.
Thank you. My granny sang this because she was so happy when I rented a luxurious Airbnb for her and I to stay in. 85 year old woman singing and dancing because of the joy that she felt. I remembered a few words of what she sang, and wanted to play it for her when I have her relive that experience at my first house this week coming up. I can't wait to see her face!!
I know there are lots of versions of this and many great ones- but i think this version by Ted Lewis captures the nostalgia of the period for me- he sings it like a guy whose seen tough times during the depression- which is what this song is all about. The Rockefellers had the money but Ted knew where the real riches were- don't you think in the current debacle millions could use some uplifting tunes like this was then? all they get now is the shaft. So sad -Bill (on the sunny side)
Wow! Never heard this arrangment before. It gives a completely different take on the lyrics. I've heard the upbeat dance version a million times as it was part of my mom's song list when she played dances.
It's a shame ratings are disabled, as I wanted to give it a thumbs up. I recall visiting the Ted Lewis Museum in Circleville, Ohio, when I was working there about 25 years ago. It was operated by 90-year-old women at the time, who probably remembered him from their youth. I see the museum is still there, though.
I'm a Circleville resident. I came here because I was watching Cheers on Netflix and the beginning of one episode featured this song. I'd never heard it so I googled the lyrics, found the song, and this was the first recommended video. I say all that to say the museum is still here and still open to the public. Ted Lewis' legacy is still very much alive here in Round Town.
Hi! It’s August 2020 and I found this song very motivating and happy. Good scape from the covid-19 pandemic. My daughter is turning 1 on the 28. I want her to value music like I do; a window of time.
What a wonderful piece of music with such a colorful history. I'm gonna tap dance to it being sung by the Senior Citizens Golden Harmonizers, Edmond, Oklahoma.
This gives me hope in a world that at times shows hopeless when I get really down I'm so glad that I'm not like my parents and was born during the Great Depression even though we are in a pandemic the Great Depression had to be worse. At least that's what people tell you that are still alive better going through this pandemic and also went to the depression.
The Spanish Flu pandemic happened about 10 years before the stock market crash that caused the Great Depression so a lot of the people who lived back then experienced both!
Great version--I remembe this so well..watching a particular series of cartoon..where a collection of alley cats would sing this and other great tunes from the '20s and '30s... I do not know the name of the series (wish I did)--but they were absolutely fantastic. Many of them had the cats singing at early hours of the a.m. and harassing a porky pig type who trying to sleep.. The rivalry continued on w/ other cartoons and the mischievous cats contijually harassing him -WISH I COULD FIND THEM
By the way lost media is a trend where the people on the internet search across the web to find usually cartoons or movies that have presumably been lost to time and in some cases restore them for viewing
I'm 22 as well, this genre of music is my absolute favorite, but I think it's sad if you don't know a Rockefeller reference, no matter your age. I think it's just plain ignorance. To me, it's like not knowing Carnegie, JP Morgan, or the Vanderbilts. They are not exactly just throw-away names, they were/are institutions. That aside, this is a LOVELY rendition of this song, though Peggy Lee's will always be my favorite. Thanks for this though! :)
I just want to say.... I am listening to this song right now bc of my horoscope sending me here............. I couldn't help it, it is always so accurate!
So many people about to be out of work - 1930 - I bet many clung to this sentiment as if it was a life buoy - repeated it like a mantra - security blanket - u may continue in this vein if you'd like. I'm not the boss of you. But i do suggest you leave your worries on the doorstep.
This reached #2 on the hit parade in April-May 1930 for Ted Lewis (Columbia 2144). The song is from the Broadway musical "International Revue." Remember that the stock market had crashed only six months before, plunging nearly everyone into a deep, deep depression -- hence the appeal of the musical message here. Sad to think that today, the way so many folks in Washington are hellbent on spending, spending spending, ruining the economy, that this song may bome back as relevant any time now!
This video was preceded by an advert for Grammarly. My grammar is excellent. I often review documents for others. Is there some way I can get credit to watch -1 adverts at some point in the future, @Google?
This recording is so slow, it comes across as sad. I like an upbeat version of the song…..Maybe this was the mood after the Spanish influenza where so many died.
Recorded on February 28, 1930; Ted's vocal style often wrung all the pathos (and joy) out of a song's lyrics- to the point of sounding like "pure corn"- whenever possible...
Ok, I made it through the entire song...the first and last time that'll happen but I had to, after all thats what the stars said to do! Gotta love us Pisces! Hope you all have a blessed day!
I am 175 years old, this takes me all the way back into my 80s, I miss having a back that works
Dang you're looking pretty swell for a pluri-centenary

Well, nowadays some people appreciate this music for a certain reason.
Ted Lewis was great!
Certainly.
Entertainment was so pure back then-no irony, no angst.....just real emotion.
Agreed, trying to be arty or intellectual will derail art. It must have human feeling.
This is beautiful, and slightly melancholy

I have this on a 78rpm record..but I haven't played it in nearly 40 years..
I remember as a young teenagers going to the movies and laughing at Ted. How little we knew.
A lovely song no matter who sings it! So simple and eloquent...

If you ever make it to Circleville, Ohio there's a Ted Lewis museum there. He was a hometown boy.

Good ol' Ted Lewis. I stopped in to the Ted Lewis Museum when I was working in Circleville many years ago. It's worth visiting, if you're in the area.
Priceless
One of my favorites, real pick-me-upper, guessed they needed it back then too, tough times good songs.
この頃のムード、凄く好きです。
A song to be enjoyed
Very attractive song
This was actually composed by Fats Waller, as was "I can't give you anything but Love." He sold them to Jimmy McHugh for drinking money.

And hardly sung an actual note of the melody- all dramatic shizzle/ good for him- anyone else - learn the song!
That's what people expected of him- and that's what he *gave* them! 🙂
