I was in New Orleans when President Obama was first elected President. I remember trying to walk down a Bourbon Street that was so jam-packed that it took an hour to move one city block. I have never seen so many young people as I saw on both Bourbon Street AND Magazine Street back in 2008. I am no longer in Nola, but this year with Kamala Harris reminds me of those days.

I was born in that weird space between millennial and gen z, and was 10 in ‘08. I remember the energy of that campaign, at least as far as my fifth grade understanding could grasp of course. I certainly remember how excited the adults around me were, a bunch of Southern California liberals who waxed poetic about that articulate and good natured senator from Illinois and his vision for the country. I watched The Daily Show, The Colbert Report, and SNL with my parents, not understanding the jokes all that much but laughing along nonetheless. I remember going into the voting booth on Election Day with my mother, who insisted I come, so I could watch her cast her ballot for our first Black President. I remember her tears of joy when he was elected, and the tears of my teachers all throughout the school day. The elation was palpable, and I will never forget it.
This, to me, feels the same. It’s early days I know, but the energy is familiar. This time around, it’s me casting a ballot for our first Black, female president, and I can practically taste the history in the making. I want this for her. I’m excited for her. I’m excited to be part of this. Let’s do this thing.

As someone who did not vote for Obama in '08, easily.
People forget how contentious the 08 democratic primary was and how independent voters and democrats actually liked John McCain.
My apologies to anyone that think might age them when I say this, but I remember the excitement in '08 when the election was going on, especially around Barack Obama. I was 7 in first grade, our class sat down with another and watched the inauguration in Jan '09. I know EXACTLY what they meant when they talked about the feeling of energy and excitement. They are absolutely correct! It feels like 2008 and the excitement, that SURGE of energy. I'm excited, the feeling of hope especially for the nation feels nostalgic once again :)
My middle adult daughter volunteered on his campaign, so our whole family was invested.
I voted for McCain that year, but I remember the excitement. I was in college at the time.
