tl;dr: high priced magic product like old sealed boxes or RL cards mostly are hold by people who can afford to not sell them and hold them and wait for high selling prices. low priced magic products on the other hand is sold by people who are under pressure to sell and so they have to lower prices when supply increases suddenly in order go get liquidity whereas the first group doesnt care about liquidity and just waits out.

Great vid! It's a interesting fact. The people wanting to get rich on unsealed product or sealed product quickly, unseal and sell their product quickly, leaving the people that saved their boxes able to hold a firm price because all of the people that would normally dip already dipped early.
The more risk tolerant the holder of an asset is, the less likely they are to sell the asset if the market is unfavorable. High end reserved list cards are largely held by wealthy investors or dedicated players / collectors who can weather economic storms better than the Timmy who has to sell their standard deck because they're short on rent one month. It's why lower end cards are more volatile than moxes for example. The investor who has a binder of moxes presumably has the financial stability to hold the assets until favorable market conditions.
It's funny you did this video. Tap Two Blue was pretty notorious for those big 20-30% undercuts on new set singles during the week of stores listing presales.
The general problem with this approach is the lack of market liquidity. We can fool ourselves into thinking an item is worth a certain amount, because that's how much we're told it is worth. But how much is it worth in reality? Cards don't pay a dividend, nor are they like bonds where you get your capital back at the end of the term. So from an investment standpoint, you've got to have some kind of exit strategy to make money. Even if a bond gets depressed in value, a bond holder can safely wait out the term of the bond and will get their interest payments and return of capital. I'm not saying cashing out is impossible, but you have to move very slowly, and carefully in doing so.

MTG isn't a veblen good. It's a card game, not a status symbol like art, wine or jewelry. It's just run by a business who saw a rapidly growing market of people using MTG as a store of value, so they have been capitalizing on that with upmarket sets such as Masters and Horizons.
@@joshuanorris5860 comparing MTG as a whole to a Black Lotus is like saying video games are Veblen goods because Nintendo World Championships. Speaking of video games, they're also art. Just because something is art doesn't mean it's just for rich people.
It depends on what sets and the relevance of the cards in current Magic formats. Standard cards lose value after they rotate out but relevant cards, in other formats do not. It does come down to EV or the wildcard pull value that determines the price of a box. Standard or recent boxes come down to the people who have overstock, how bad they need money.

What would happen if some one dumped 1000 boxes of something that is market price is say $600 a box and they dump it into the market for say $150 a box ? Would that move the value and effect the price
Why the F would they do that Timmy? Most of the boxes will be scooped up fairly quik, Go and buy 1000 boxes of original zendikar and dump them on it for 150 bucks and see what happends. www.mcdonalds.com/us/en-us/careers.html
From 600-150 is a to wierd number, the older the box/ smaller the print run the more stable it will be in the market, a 600 box wont move a whole lot if you dump them for 550(would be abit more realistic). But i believe a swing could happen if you dump 2000 boxes(for 120 ea) with a current vallue of 160 each it will ajust but once the boxes are gone after a couple of months they will go up again. I noticed it also depends on the amount of product on the market, low amount of boxes= low swings huge amount of boxes= bigger swings in price.
I'm just saying would it effect the market price I know it's unrealistic but what would happen if someone did it would it effect the price of market for that box for everyone over all I'm just curious to how that works
Affect prices on sealed boxes no unless that person had a lot of box to really hit the market. It probably take 3,000 boxes of any box set worth 500+ to really keep it down to many big wigs would gobble the product and just relist at there price point. Ps the only thing it affects is mostly the singles market as some of it may dip a bit here n there while other singles will not budge.
Rudy. The downside risk isnt that the price will drop on sealed product. the risk is that the liquidity will dry up. of course that isnt terrible if you are financially stable because things always change but its still a risk.

So if a wealthy individual were to buy out most of the existing stock of Dragon's Maze booster boxes, they could potentially set a significantly higher floor price?😜
Magic prices go off supply and demand/ how fast you can buy/sell the product Like if stronghold boxes are going for 2kea, and someone is trying to selling 100 boxes and after a week they sold 1 box so they dropped to 1900 then after a few weeks they dropped it even more because no one buying so they dropped to 1500. Since it been on the market for so long now every one has to sell for 1500 or lower so it becomes the set price
But at the same time if someone is buying 100 stronghold boxes and they want them quick so they start buying at 2kea then after a week if they could only buy one box so they go up to 2.25kea then lets say it takes him a few months to buy at 2.25kea so everyone else trying to buy at the same time has to buy at 2.25k or higher. Let's say it takes him 4 months to buy all 100 boxes at 2.25k and the other ppl still buying at 2.25k so it kinda becomes the set price for the box
