"The Gold" Lyrics
Couldn't really love you any more
You've become my ceiling
I don't think I love you anymore
That gold mine changed you
You don't have to hold me anymore
Our cave's collapsing
I don't wanna be me anymore
My old man told me
"You don't open your eyes for a while
You just breathe that moment down"
Forty miles out of East Illinois from my old man's heart attack
I believed you were crazy
You believed you loved me
I don't wanna bark here anymore
Black hills, the colly
Wasn't really dangerous for us
We just catch you coughing
What the hell are we gonna do?
A black mile to the surface
I don't wanna be here anymore
It all tastes like poison
Can't open your eyes for a while
You just breathe that moment down
Forty hours out of Homestake
And I'm trying to translate you again
I believed you were crazy
You believed you loved me
You and me, we're a day drink
So lose your faith in me
Can't open your eyes for a while
You just breathe that moment down
You can't open your eyes for a while
You just breathe
I believed you were crazy
You believed you loved me
You and me, we're a day drink
So lose your faith in me
Lose your faith in me
Oh, lose your faith in me
A Black Mile to the Surface is a bold record of vision and purpose, inspired by and dwelling in a sensory and imaginative experience. It’s a reinvention of sorts, both musically and personally-a sort of cosmic worldview shift. But in the end, the record’s themes are universal.
Inspired by their experience creating the score for the film Swiss Army Man (a Sundance hit - New York Times-lauded “marvelously melancholic music”), they seized the chance to rethink Manchester Orchestra’s typical methods of working. This process gave them new ideas of how to think about writing, how songs could flow, and how to layer melodies on top of one another to propel the tune into a new emotional arena. To manifest this vision, the band turned to producer Catherine Marks (Foals, PJ Harvey, The Killers, Interpol) and began working with her at Echo Mountain studio in Asheville. In addition to mixing with Marks at her Assault & Battery studio in London, Manchester Orchestra also worked with John Congleton (St. Vincent, Explosions In The Sky, Angel Olsen, Cloud Nothings) in Los Angeles - gathering new sounds, adding to and widening the songs’ dimensions - as well as their longtime producer Dan Hannon, who offered an invaluable perspective that only an old friend could give. Encouraged to go against first instinct, each collaborator added their own touch to the music, pushing it to places no Manchester Orchestra record had ever gone before.
“It was a test-personally, emotionally, creatively-to see how far we could push ourselves without breaking. This record was intentionally un-compromised on every level. We made sure to explore all the options and that we were moving forward with the strongest approach for each song- strongest part, strongest melody, strongest lyric.”

This band DESERVES SO MUCH MORE CREDIT… This song is absolutely beautiful.
I am almost 67 years old. I have been a songwriter for over 45 of those years. Having stated that - I could have never written this song, and to be honest, I'm jealous as hell. Fuck you guys. Lol. Absolutely phenomenal tune.
I discovered this song by using shazam in JCPenney's today
Awesome
Heard them in king soopers not to long ago. Almost pulled the manager aside to thank him for the song choices.
Medicine 🎵🔥
SoundHound at Fry's grocery store today lol
I heard this at the old 5 and dime corner drug back in 1923. It was playing on the wireless telegraph. I had to wait 97 years to find out what it was called
I had the privilege to meet these guys when they were teenagers. I knew then, this would be a relevant special band. Glad I had the pleasure to see you and meet you. I'm 65 years old and a rock drummer. My Son and others have come with us to The Stuffing several times and all have thanked us for helping them find you. Best of luck and keep it as special and real as you have all this time. You are truly special writers, performers and now role models for the causes you bring with you to your performances. Thank you for the music and I pray the world gets to know you.
Amen to those words
Amen
Prayers answered . I'm new to the music and it reaches me in that way few ever allow to let go to get there. I played and wrote til mental issues took it away.
They are truly fantastic The Gold is a Masterpiece
This song help me realize then I have to quiet my last relashionship ... and now I feel great to be alone
The universe can never have enough of this band. Can't wait to put the new album into my brain.

The lyrics to this song are a lullaby to relationships. The video to this song is nothing short of surrealistic genius.
Agreed!
I must say even after 4 years, this song is still one of my favorites to listen to. I love it so much. The lyrics, the instrumentals, vocals, everything is perfect. This is one gem that I hope many can find. perfection.
This song and simple math ❤❤❤
I find that I have an affinity for melancholy songs. For some reason they evoke some kind of existential thought when I listen to them.
you are not alone. hits me like clockwork everyday, i search out the most soul crushing song, wail it out, come back to the day with a profound gratitude
I do as well. It's cathartic. I love Beach House as well.
So many who listen, so little who hear. We should pity them and pray for their enlightenment. Long live Manchester Orchestra!
One of the greatest songs I've heard in years.
I feel like dying, then it’s the Orchestral sounds of Manchester and not only do I want to live, I want to embrace the Beauty
Not surprising: It's really good.

wow this is great i love this :)
I am cheated for being old and set in my ways with my stereo in the car. I didn't hear of this incredibly talented band until tonight and cannot stop listening to them now and annoying the musician husband with every new discovery. A. Maze. Please let me hear it all. Time to expand the horizon once again. Cheers, everyone, and long live the music.

@Mike Johnson have you listened to their cover of the piña colada song? Takes on amazing new levels
@Mike Johnson
That's really awesome, but why are you yelling?
Ive heard this song on the radio myself! Just gotta listen to different stations i guess!
It’s hard to pick a favorite album from them for me but this one’s definitely a contender! Anything Andy touches turns to gold. I love his side projects too. He’s the best lyricist in the game in my opinion.
Radiohead was my favorite band up till Kid A, I’m so glad to have Manchester who carries on that haunting and engulfing yet spacious original sound like OK Computer but with their own signature.
What’s more, is they are even better live!
This song should have 100 million views...
Easily and by far one of the best bands I’ve ever discovered. They are lyrical geniuses and produce melodies that pierce your soul.
Absolutely agreed

this album really hits different when you grew up in the black hills

2 years later and this song hurts more. Hurts deep.
@Mario C I feel for you.
@Mario C I think we all remember hearing that from someone. I'm 39 and I remember hearing it from my high school boyfriend on a park bench drinking a blue Gatorade frost.
It's a curse and a blessing to remember.
🥺
I think the mind wants to forget those times we were in despair, but songs like this make us remember. Those memories need to be remembered because they make us who we are.
I changed this to .75 playback speed and it was sublime!
not gonna lie, i wish i could marry this song
I heard this song the day my husband was wrongfully fired from a Gold mine in Colorado. I was driving a haul truck in the mine and this song hit home for me. Love it!
Right... Wrongfully fired.
How does one get fired from a mine?
Probably the same way you get fired from anywhere. And questionable firings occur often especially at high liability places. But we don't know the true story either way, so we're better to just accept it, or at least ignore it, rather than challenge it. I mean, if we don't know either way, then why chose to be negative? Etc.
I didn't realize that employment in a gold mine was still a thing in America. Interesting.
@@WinterReflections How do you think we get gold then? Leprechauns on St Patricks day?😬😬 There's literally a show on gold mining thats been on for like 10+ yrs now too😂
I backpacked around the country for five years, and Manchester Orchestra was in my ears most of the time. It was an extremely difficult feat, and I couldn't have done it without them.

There is a level of “incredible” in this piece that is pure genius. How this sound touches my soul is beyond explanation… miraculous
this band will always be my favorite band. manchester orchestra never ceases to amaze me. Andy Hull you amazing angel voiced lumberjack bearded bastard. ya did it again. I hope to see you all live one day💜💜 👌
I have seen a lot of amazing bands live, including Manchester orchestra, and I can tell you one absolute fact about them: they are LOUD. hands down by far the loudest live band I have ever seen, I still remember every second of that show, it was fantastic.
same :'0 between songs I shouted "50 Cent is my favorite rapper" (I'm sure you know what I'm talking about.) They got a kick out of it on stage and the crowd busted it. LMAO proudest moment of that year
Dane Pedersen I saw them in Seattle with Say Anything before I knew who they were. One performance was all I needed to call them my favorite band. I think of my life in terms of before and after I discovered Andy Hull. He's my Christ.
Hannah Rader so did it again so deep this dude damn
Absolutely!
Still one of my favorite…..
It's a shame that a band like this with such great music doesn't get as many plays as it deserves.
I'm a simple man:
I see Manchester Orchestra, I click like.
Simple math: Manchester Orchestra + new song = click.
I see what you did there :]
It's an obvious equation.
Simple and to the point. Well said.

I listened to the Phoebe Bridgers version, and I did t know there was an original! I love the PB cover but this one is incredible too!! Such different vibes even with the same lyrics. I love the energy in this one and need to check out this band more 💕

They are the best songwriters in the past 10 years.

this comforts me in a strange way
I lived with my godparents for a while and I can’t listen to things song without missing them, I live hours and hours away and it still hurts to know I’m growing and their growing and I don’t get to be there. This is our favorite song
SOO GLAD I heard this on the radio and wrote some lyrics down so I could remember it later
why does it hurt so much?
I don't want to be here anymore. I can barely see the keyboard through the tears.
I'm sorry you are hurting!!! You need to be hugged!!! Our world is too full of people for anyone to hurt badly enough to not want to be here anymore!
I feel the same way. My life use to be enjoyable and I was always the positive person who always saw the good in situations and cheered people up. Now I can barely find any reason to stick around at all. My life has taken such a dark and sad turn the last 1.5 years it's insane. Just like that it all changed and everyone faded away, and everything changed for the worse all at once basically. I'm so sick of acting like everything is fine and I'm tired of being here. My mom is the only reason I'm still here, cause I know how much it would hurt her.
@@dalekay9ine keep hanging on. i know it feels tough right now, but you can get through this. best of wishes to you!
@@charlotted4642 Thanks, I'm trying but it doesn't seem like things will ever get better and only seem to get worse.
@@dalekay9ine i know how it feels and i’ve been there but believe me it always does get better. you think life just gets worse and worse, but one day life just gets better. and then after that better and better again. and the days that are better are so worth it. i know it’s really hard to believe the cliche “life gets better” but it’s a cliche for a reason life really does get better.
some things that have personally improved my mental health are: journaling, going on daily walks and getting sun, listening to my favorite music, reaching out to people i want to talk to and not just waiting for them to reach out to me, doing dance work outs, watching my happy tv shows (mine are new girl, mystery incorporated, total drama island, schitts creek, and bones), and spending more time with my family. all of these things seem so small, but they’ve really helped me. also don’t be afraid to reach out to people in your life. this past year has been really tough on a lot of people, but keep keeping on, it will get better.
My favorite song from my all time favorite band

I can't stop listening to this song.
Marcus Parente agreed
I’ve had this on repeat for over two hours now I actually haven’t stopped crying the whole time... I feel like this song makes me alone for a little while. For an introvert that carries a mountain of meaning. Being alone is what I crave, yet when I hear this I feel way, way too alone. I feel alone not just physically but mentally emotionally every sing way. It’s too much, I don’t know why I listen to this song. It hurts too much but it’s beautiful at the same time. Can someone love something so painfully much that they hate it with more passion that ever physically possible before?
Marcus Parente same 💙
yep....this is a very good tune
Marcus Parente Me either
I found this song when I was planning a month long cross-country driving trip to the Pacific Northwest a couple of years ago. I planned our stops according to various cryptic song lyrics, so I took my kids and fam to Homestake Mine in the Black Hills for 4th of July- they shoot fireworks out above it. We had so many adventures and unexpected conversations along the way west, through the Northern Plains. My family still doesn't know that I planned the trip by songs. This is still one of my favorite all time songs.
This song is a masterpiece. On so many levels this art just hits the right places. Amazing.
THIS SONG IS FRICKIN INCREDIBLE. Even after just a few listens I think it might be one of their best ever. I think this album will run circles around Cope (and I did really enjoy that album, it just didn't have as much depth as their past works).
One of the people in this band (steve) is my cousin
Yeah funny thing about writing. No two people write the same. A sudden genius when mediocrity was the norm says something. Maybe you are listening to mumblers and pretenders. Wonder if anything they write after this will have the same depth and understanding. Do you ever notice that some the greatest rock songs in the last 5 years have a very distinct and unique style in verse.
This song makes me cry but I can't stop listening. ❤️❤️❤️
"iiiiiiiii beliiiiiiiiieeeeeved you were craaaaazy....... yoooouuuuu beliiiiiieeeeeeved you looooooved me...."

They are the freaking masters of 6/8 and 3/4 haha. I love the distinct flavor it gives to the whole Mean Everything to Nothing album
I have a special respect for those that can distinguish the difference in 3/4 and 6/8.
So any musician worth their salt?
Pretentious hipster fucktards
what's pretentious? knowing time signatures or manchester orchestra? either way, whichever problem you got, it makes little sense to join a conversation about it if you have such a distaste for it.
I can't put to words the importance of this band.
The visuals in this music video are as random and indecipherable as the song is good.

Absolute bop my fav this song is the key to all of my memories 😢
Same
Somehow this is the story of my father and I. He died a goldminer in the Black Hills of South Dakota, considered by many to be the last of the Old West Miners, a man out of time. I've been to the bottom of the Homestake Mine with him, and survived a mine collapse together with him in the back country exploring old mines. I've been a mile into the black where you can smell the arsenic in the stale 'dead air' and had to get out carefully but quickly. We fought beside eachother through a divorce that broke our family to pieces; years would pass without us communicating at all, but he had my heart completely. In the end, he couldn't see that and we lost faith in eachother entirely. This song's chorus caught me and stuck in my head, but when I listened to the words, I can hardly believe it. This is literally 'Our Song'. I grew up in North Georgia. Strange connection to this song/band.
Wow that was incredible
I remember hearing this song for the first time. I was at a front bottoms concert and these guys were the opener. Hearing it not only for the first time but also live was such an experience. I would pay to have that moment back
This song was the soundtrack in my dreams the other night.
I don’t know why, but when my dog passed a year ago I listened to this nonstop. It gave me and my daughter peace. What a damn song…..

It's a moment where you are hit with the love you shown is given back in physical form.
Discovered this song last night on the radio in a Whole Foods bathroom. Discovered that today is the lead singers birthday. Tomorrow is mine. I am very touched by these lyrics and music. Without explanation they are drawing me into deeper intimacy with the Lord Jesus Christ. Make of all this what you will.
I saw them in middletown NY almost 2yrs ago with a smaller crowd than expected and they absolutely killed it. Theses boy have it together and played like they were performing in front of a stadium
