Frontal Impact takes place at 64 Km/h, 40% of the width of the car striking a deformable barrier. In the side impact, a mobile deformable barrier impacts the driver's door at 50 km/h. In the pole test, the car tested is propelled sideways at 29km/h into a rigid pole.
I was in a serious head on collision in my 1996 VW Golf Harlequin in March of this year. We were both going about 40 mph each... The collision shop said that the way the car was designed saved my life. I'm a believer in VW. I wouldn't be writing this if it weren't for their product.
Yo you still good?
@@Bosshub Still kicking. Years later, I've got a little fluid on my knee that will never go away, but it's manageable.
@@serenitytenshi You the same person?
Your 96 golf is an mk3 not mk4 because the mk4 started his production in late 97/early 98
RIP Harlequin
Still plenty of Mk4 golfs on the road compared to other cars the same age. Proper German engineering and built quality.
In eastern europe 1.9tdi cost 1500-3000euro, depending on conditon, its still "new" car here 😂
I own one too. My First car, still Love it
@@AleX-un7bw The UK has become the same lately, cannot get a good MK4 1.9 TDI for under £1500. They cost more now than a MK5 lol
@@gravemind6536 and they worth more than MK5 no joke, MK5 have more rust and worse engine. If u don't want MK4, just skip mk5 and buy MK6 or 7
Mine is a MK4 1,9 TDI 130 HP. 4,8 liter of gazoline / 100 km
best looking golf they ever made
All thease languages and you chose to speak facts damn
Indeed! It was a combination of the retro design and a refined interior !
I drive mine still
Still
Hell, even crashed it looks good
I have experienced head to head accident, both cars were going about 60 km/h. Other car was also a golf 4 by the way. All of the people from both cars experienced only minor injuries, airbags were soft (i was driving). I think golf offers pretty good safety.
Great car, probably the best VW ever
+Panos Kotsopoulos I have one,only 333 000km
+joonas meriläinen
Hi there, mine has "only" 190,000, looks and feels like new. My previous mark3 was very good but years behind in quality, also as my friends last generations.

Or better then the New dacia

A friend of mine has one with 369000 km and.. still going strong!!!
not on volvo, but golf 4 was the car that forced every other major car manufacturer to pay more attention to safety and every other major car manufacturer to keep up with vw cars in every other area such as interior quality, comfort, rust prevention, driving dynamics, engine design etc. that car certainly made history
Volvo is much safer than that cheap as golf. Volvo been always safer and at the for front of safety not volkswagen.
Rust prevention :DDDD
@@tobias7874 This car got the same 4 star rating as any Volvo of this period got. Yes Volvo is the best for safety but that is expected but VW upped the game with the rest of the car and made sure Volvo were not the only safe car which made other car makers do better.
Golf 4 has anything, anything but ‚rust prevention‘💀💀💀
I tested it on myself unfortunately.
Crashed head on into another car. It was my fault. I lost control.
4 passengers, car started twitching only thing I could do was to aim the crash more at me. They're all fine, even the driver of the other car. I'm bruised up but that's better than anybody else being hurt.
+Hamisxa Hope you are okay.
Charlie Wiltermood I am. Thanks
Did the airbag deploy, how it feels when you hit?
CarandTuningFan It's alright haha. You just get shit powder in your nose.
Inexorable I True Fact. But i guess we will need some training before in order to think about that in that fraction of time. Ive had a lot o crashes during my childhood. Between my 10 and 14 ive had around 9 crashes, at that age, not myself driving of course (yeah some friends joke saying that i should visit the witch because having 9 crashes in four years, which are the odds? lol). Ive used to race on karts and i must say, while on track we're always alert and if something happen we know how to react. What is fucked up is when you're driving peacefully on a long journey and suddenly the things get out of control. And in head on crash even if you aim at the right spot you have to consider the other variable. The other driver.
Which doesnt mean that you must not try to make it for the best anyways.
Best car forever 1,9 TDI
I've got a 2003 Golf 4 Ocean. Brilliant machine, properly built, 180.000 km , nor rust, looks brand new.
for sale?
Golf 4 Ocean, 428.000 km , no rust, still can go 170 km/h on highway. 1.4 Petrol engine has no issue, and you can accelarate quickly from 0-100 if you are skilled enough
I have a 1.9 TDI with 500.000km and is still running

1.9tdi variant from 2001 284.000km, engine doesn't burn any oil, perfect condition :))
Same car, more than 370 000 km
This car is much better than the 2016 mustang.
Throw Rowley just watch the mustang crash test
Yeah, just watched it, this is allot better
Xc 90 Volvo
why did they stop making this car, it still looks brilliant!!

Have a 2.0 from 2000. 284.000km on it. Still going and almost no rust. Will drive it for as long as I can.
I have a 2.0 from 2002. No airbags. I’ll probably die in it
This is a good result for such an old car.
It was the 2nd safest car of its time it was only beaten by the BMW 5 series. This was the safest affordable car of its time and the first car to have ISOFIX. If you ever driven this car you would also know it feels rock solid. I crashed this car into a concrete pillar at 5mph and it left the tiniest mark and just bounced off like nothing this car was tough as nails.
I use one from 2003 with true ~172.000km... Its my first car i love it

Euro NCAP testing was created and put in action AFTER the Golf 3 ceased production in 1998. At least in Europe, where tests are performed for european drivers.
ok
The Golf IV was way ahead of it‘s time. The progress to the MK III was the largest in all Golf generations

@JENSDONT You can still buy them (not new of course) . I just bought a ten year old Golf MK IV GTI 25th anniversary edition in a very good condition. Runs like a charm.
This car saved my life, seriously.
the Golf 4 my friend drove lost his front right wheel because of a hole in the road at 100~110km/h and ended up on the other side of the road some 100 metres inside a field, wrecked to pieces from spinning side to side but he escaped out of the car with minor injuries, because he had his seat-belt on ONLY. The airbags on the passenger seat next to the driver opened up both front and on the side but on the drivers side they didn't. WEAR YOUR SEAT-BELTS! don't rely on the airbags only..

@rxs2011 I've just found the answer. There were side airbags in this test car from 1998. Check the link in the description.
"Side impact: The seat-mounted side airbag provided padding for the driver's chest and abdomen. Protection for his chest and abdomen was adequate and for his pelvis, good. His head lightly struck the central door pillar and seat belt loop. The door pillar trim cover contained energy-absorbing padding which should help to protect the head if the contact was more severe."
This vehicle has improved a lot over the last, oh...twenty or so years.

Jan 1999 1.9 SE TDI 90HP. 130K .Never going to be a classic but it's looked after me for 19 years (that's longer than the wife did ! ) and I'm going to look after it. Had it's first accident a month ago, someone hit it while parking and the headlight tabs broke. That and some paint damage to it's bumper and the insurance company wanted to write it off . . No way !!! . . I'll make sure it's going to celebrate it's 25th . Makes me sad when I see these perfectly sound motors being broken .
Of course the insurance company wrote it off the car is basicially worthless even if its low mileage they go off the average list price. For you its about whether the car is worth it for you. It probably is based on my expereince with a MK4 Golf mk4 1.9 SDI
I bought my 2001 1.9 tdi 90bhp just over a year ago for £450, the bodywork isn’t great but I’ve done 30,000 miles since then and it’s brilliant such a good work horse
Comparatively with other cars from same class/years, i think that the golf is safe. But it's just my opinion.
you’re daaamn right, the 306 is a unsafe car,the xsara is also not good enough, the megane too
There are 3 only compact cars which are safe back in 98:The Golf 4,Audi A3 and Ford Focus

@oe98b07 originally, no. they were made standard a couple years later.
That was very good back in 98
Its scary when you drive this exact one, same color. and just know this is what it would look like if you crashed
Its scarier if your drive something thats actually rubbish. You crash this car you break your leg you crash something like a Fiat Sciento and you are killed you crash an old Renault clio and you are in a coma or paralysed.
tank
Lol, in your dreams maybe
Im really surprised that the Germans did a lot of work for safe crash, compared to the previous models. The Mk3 is really bad at front slam
This car is safer than the 2020 fiat panda, Jeep Wrangler and Suzuki swift
No the those Stars would be worth nothing in 2020 this car would get 1 stars 2 if lucky in a 2020 crash test. Standards for crashing are higher and they also test for autonomous braking and safety assist systems that didn't even exist in 1998. The new crash tests are somewhat flawed in testing for auto braking and seatbelt reminders etc since they have nothing to do with actual crash safety but those are the conditions cars are now tested under.
Maybe it's about power-to-weight or driving skills ;) Or does he have a 1.6 Common Rail TDI 105 PS ? I had one of them for 2 weeks and really didn't like it. 1.9 TDI Pumpe Düse are the best!
We had one 2000 Golf. Had an accident from back at 2010. The car was looked worst . After we sold it. It is not a tank.
@Cnupoc
An airbag's almost useless if you don't wear a seat belt.
The VW Golf 4 does actually have side airbags placed in the front seats. They did not pop out, did they?

It won't, 98 golf cabrio was developed on the same platform as golf 3
Funny how the curtain airbags didnt deploy when there is clearly an "airbag" symbol on the inside of the A pillar
EuroNCAP tests with standard equipment, and the VW Golf 4 did not have the side airbags as standard. My father owned one, and it indeed had a side curtain airbag symbol (I mean he never crashed it so...) but I can remember reading the manual and finding that not all Golf 4 vehicles had side airbags.
It only had lower side airbags that deployed out the side of the seats it did not have curtain airbags unless it was super high spec.
4 stars very good for 1998.
you are right back then the golf 4 had an edge on EVERY other constructor incusive merc bmw and also volvo.
This car was beaten only by the BMW 5 series at the time for safety and the Golf was an incredibly close 2nd in terms of safety it was way ahead of its time.
Yeah, I saw that video. It's my first car. Do you think it's safe? I dont know much about these things..
Its safe for a 98 in this car you are likely to survive a crash but you will also be likely to break your ankles or legs as the pedals are the weak point and and are pushed inwards during a crash.
Why do I never see the airbags on the seats (not the brand) on these videos?
because most car that was made in 1998 didnt have airbag. or their bigger more expensive cars had it at that time. and it was not standard one had to pay extra to get it. now its standard on most cars.
No, I meant this specific model. I own a TDI from '00. These cars come with airbags on the seats. I came to find out that they're triggered by a different set of sensors, still, they should have deployed on the side impact. Maybe this one had no seat airbags.
Mine does. Some do. This one didn't. Mystery solved. ;)
+Bruno Oliveira Mk4 2003 do have seats airbag
this was a pre-production car,all productions golf mk4 have side seat airbags.Maybe with side airbags in the test, the result and score would had be better
