    Just revisiting the costing for the purchase of your yacht as I’m slowly budgeting for my future yacht in the med, and I can’t believe the cost for 4 solar panels installed for 5k.
    I just had 18 panels installed on my home in Sydney 6.6kw system for 4K. That’s some expensive electricity you have there 😅
    Incredible what they get away with charging people on boats, it definitely isn’t a cheap lifestyle, but hey it’s a house on the sea 🙂

    Interesting insight to orbital cost of these larger boats. I was surprised by the eye watering solar panel costs with all the extras to make them work. It is hard to figure out how good a deal that marina gave but so far looks to reasonable . Many Mediterranean Spanish French Italian marinas have a boat as trapped audience and plaster on extra cost with not allowing outside the Marina operators do the work without to pay a excessive extra percentage cost.. Many large project refits it is often the method to bring the craft off marina sites to suitable warehouse or storage site to do the work there. Moving the boat from Marina to storage yard locally and returning to Marina most likely to be over c€ 3000 and storage fees per month can also cost north of €800. It looks like you did well buy the boat and sail away in three months with that heavy schedule of work done . However if you get your boat to Aussie and got it a lot cheaper than local prices or sell it for good price there after doing your big sail you could have got a good deal doing it the fast way .. Many boats and marinas in spain I have seen might easily struggle and take longer for that much work for many reasons often outside their control such as long waiting list of boats to repair in front of your boat. Those Marina rates @ €800 pm were not looking the worst for a 46 foot boat .The Mediterranean marina prices are often stupid money . Summer time the Greece islands have much more anchoring possibilities than westrn Mediterranean regions . South France or South Portugal tend to be cheapest warmest parts to stay in in winter times. Hard to find good deals in south western Atlantic Spain for deep keel boat . The Eastern med can get too cold in winter but can be cheap to park boat on dry land to do refits or leave boat there to go to do other travels for the winter. I did not see How much it cost to register boat to another reg and I presume it became a Aussie reg boat? Anyway bon voyage . Me as a solo sailor will stay smaller size and stay below 30 feet to keep costs lower but if I win the lotto who knows ha ha

    • @SailingABSea
      @SailingABSea  5 років тому

      Hey DC, thanks for watching and commenting. We registered her in the UK.UKP25 for 5 years on the SSR, compared to AU$1,500 to register in Aus. Then you can only have Aus insurance. Too many negatives. UK registration was easy. Our expensive solar is paying it's way. Our batteries are usually fully charged by 9.30am (summer) and 11.30 am (winter). Plus we now have a 12 volt water heating element which uses our excess solar to heat our water. If you continue our video series you'll see that we end up wintering onboard in Turkey, which was fantastic. We're in the Greek Aegean islands now. Where are you currently sailing?

We are Claudio and Nadia aged 58 and 53, the owners of Katry Queen II a Sun Odyssey 45.2, we have been sailing in Greece for 7 years but only for two months a year and we are preparing to be able to sail all year round. We follow your videos and your continuous maintenance on the boat, even Claudio is always worried about repairing mechanical parts that don't work. After your experience we would like to know what is the average annual cost of living on the boat including boat maintenance costs? The next year we didn't spend a lot, Our winter on the hard in Greece we spent a lot, this winter we will not spend a lot.Any figure that we could offer would be misleading. We don't keep records of what we spend. If something breaks, it must be fixed. Sorry that's probably not a helpful answer. Cheers.

    Hi Barry and Aannsha,
    I came across your blog yesterday and watched most of tour videos! I personally think your boat was good value, now all the essential maintenance and considering all the additions you have made. When you were originally looking for a boat, were you not tempted by the Jeanneau 45ds? Or did you have to stick to a rigid budget? Your last video was very informative and very helpful, thank you for sharing. I think Jeanneau boats are an excellent boat. I'm based in London and my wife and I are going down same route. Hopefully we should be afloat next year. Good luck to both of you and I look forward to following your adventures. All the best. Kind regards Daryl.

      Hi Barry,
      Thank you for replying so quickly. I fully appreciate and understand sticking to your finite budget. The cost of all the additional equipment and the sailing lessons etc, etc do mount up! Also with a boat it's a bit like a bottomless pit and inevitably there will be more unforseen expenditure, as there always is! I think you've got a good boat for the price, and it's roomy enough for two people, and not too big that it restricts you from any of the marinas. It's always difficult finding the exact balance. Well done to both of you for what you've achieved. It's raining in London this morning! All the best Daryl.

    Bye from Italy!

    • @SailingABSea
      @SailingABSea  4 роки тому +2

      Hi Fabio and thanks for watching our videos. An annual budget is a hard thing to pin down for several reasons.
      Firstly, over the winter 2019/2020 we spent many thousands of dollars on doing maintenance that will not need doing for another 5 years and as we did jobs we discovered more jobs, so that winter was expensive. This winter our maintenance costs should be very low.
      Secondly, we do not keep a record of how much we spend. If a job needs doing and a part needs paying for then it simply has to be done no matter what the cost.
      Thirdly, it depends on the lifestyle you choose. Some people like to dine out at a restaurant every night, but we only do that as a special thing, we generally buy whatever local foods are available and cook on board.
      Fourthly, some people are purist sailors who don't mind spending and extra 5 hours tacking back and forth to reach their destination. We do like to sail when the wind is favourable and we will do some tacking, but if that means arriving at an unknown anchorage after dark then we will turn the engine on and motor to the anchorage.
      So as you can see the answer to the "how much does it cost" question is "it depends." Cheers.

    You mentioned about the possibility of sailing back to Australia. Is that your long term plan? To zig zag your way back to Aussie. I guess it’s still early days in your cruising lifestyle to making long term plans.

      Hi Ben, if you start off at 30% and it gets accepted you've had a win. If there's some negotiating and you end up at 20% it's still a win. There wasn't a listed price as she was never actually put on the market, that being said the price we offered, which was accepted, was 75,000 Euros.

    As always a well done explanation from your costing.
    Just wondering if the VAT is the same as GST and what are you using to upload and download your data, do you have a on board Satellite connection or more like a mobile 4g type connection

    • @SailingABSea
      @SailingABSea  6 років тому

      Hi Mr G, yes VAT (value added tax) is the equivalent to GST (goods & services tax). Internet is via a Spanish sim card in a mifi device. 20GB for 20 Euros. It's workable if we are near the coast and within range of a tower. Satellite costs an arm and a leg. Just not doable for us.

      Thanks Baz for getting back to me that, I thought your data may be something like you mentioned.

      Hi Ian, if you go to our website www.absea.com.au and search for Barry's Blog # 37 - How much does it all cost? That blog breaks down every item cost. Cheers🍺👍

      @@SailingABSea Awesome, thank you! I love the fact that you reply to everyone's questions.
      I'm looking at say a Beneteau 46 or something like you have Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 45.1. would you choose a different boat if you had the have? I'm favouring a boat with davit & solar etc all done., but from Australia, its a bit hard as you know, going by just internet searches.
      We are both 65, I've been sailing for a fair while, but not my wife, but not much bluewater. except for a week in Croatia just recently

      We're still very much enjoying A B Sea, she's just the right size, inside and out, for 2 people. We spent hundreds of hours looking at boats on the Internet and as you say the only true way to get a feel for the vessel is to get on board and see how the size works for you. Will you buy in Oz or elsewhere?

      Sailing A B Sea
      I’m looking in the Med, but mostly Greece, Italy, Turkey, it comes down to budget!
      Australia is too expensive and not where we want to be!

    • @SailingABSea
      @SailingABSea  4 роки тому +1

      @@ianmcknight7310 Turkey is a great starting point, friendly people, inexpensive and tons of anchorages. Plus cheap to get all the little jobs and modifications sorted out. Be aware that the brokers fee in Italy is paid 50/50 by buyer and seller. We've heard that Italy is expensive and there are far fewer protected anchorages.

    Yes but.... What was the cost of all the beer, nuts, pizza and sausage rolls you ate while you waited? Also, how much money did you spend on all the things you didn't really need but absolutely could not do without?

    • @SailingABSea
      @SailingABSea  6 років тому

      Sorry Eric we lost track of beer expenditure, I'll go count the empties. We were very good about controlling our spending on our 'need' versus 'want' items.

    Hi
    Great videos. I was wondering where you bought your insurance and were there problems trying to get insurance for a 46ft boat to be sailed in the Mediterranean by new sailors. I am in the same position and finding insurance difficult

    • @SailingABSea
      @SailingABSea  4 роки тому

      Hi Dirk we are insured with Top Sail and there were no problems being new sailors, they were even okay with us having no fixed berth and living on anchor 95% of the time.

    Thanks for sharing and 👍🏻 for the AB Sea video style!
    Just wondering, why you pay import duty and VAT for items with destination on a foreign boat (-> export -> duty & VAT free). I assume, you have an australian or at least a non EU registration.
    Fair winds and following seas ☀️🌬⛵️

    • @SailingABSea
      @SailingABSea  6 років тому

      Thanks for the thumbs up, it's really appreciated. Regarding the import duty/VAT thing, we could claim back what we paid when we leave Spain, but the paperwork and time it would take would be more hassle than it's worth. A B Sea is now a UK registered vessel and we're traveling on UK passports. I think the initial problem was that we just had the delivered items addressed to Jose's office and not 'yacht in transit'. Lesson learned.

    • @iainlyall6475

      why are you UK registered vs aussi?

    • @SailingABSea
      @SailingABSea  6 років тому +1

      Aussie registration costs AU$1,500. UK registration costs UKP25 for 5-years. While the UK is still a part of the EU it also makes traveling through the Med a lot easier if she's registered in an EU country.

      Hi Judith912, I am sure a 2018 model Jeanneau would be a heck of a lot more than the 100k Euros. You can search for new and used yachts here www.yachtworld.com So glad that you're enjoying our journey so far. Cheers.

    Nice video, im looking to get into sailing, what are the usual harbour costs in the med?

    • @SailingABSea
      @SailingABSea  5 років тому +1

      Hi Nathan, we tend to stay away from harbours, hence why we spent so much on our huge Mantus anchor. We did spend 1 night in the harbour at Pythagoria, Samos and that was 10 Euros inc water and electricity. We went in to wash A B Sea and fill up her water tanks.

    Us Aussies don't mind and are not ashamed to talk about money and cost of things... it makes us (Aussie$) laugh when people think it's a big secret. I.E. wages and cost of life and things...O and Aussies don't TIP anyone and we hate taxes and any other fees about the original price, and we do expect a 50% discount on everything, don't be insulted when Aussies ask.

      When we set out on our journey one of the things we decided was to include prices of things , whether it was boat parts, entry to a museum, price of fuel etc. We felt that was very much missing in the videos we watched about this lifestyle. 😀
