This is probably the best Boston accent video I have seen on the net. Thanks Sharen I never really picked up the accent growing up in Concord and having parents from out of state, but I do things like drop my "g's" in words ending in "ing". People discussing the Boston accent usually don't mention this. There are a ton of other expressions and stuff that is not accent related. I still say "its no biggie". And using the word "tad" as in "I'm a tad overweight" is unheard of out here in the west. I think in M.A.S.H. Charles Emerson Winchester would say "tad" a lot to give his character an upper class air. But dropping your "g"'s can stigmatize you on the west coast, marking you as slightly "lower class". Like answering the phone at work and saying "Oh, she's in a meetin' right now". Not polished english I'm afraid. :) Anyway, thanks again for making this video..
Hi Kent! thanks so much for listening and commenting. You're right, it is not very formal English and is a tad on the lower class side. I try and watch how thick I pour it on depending on the company I am with.
Sharen Wendy, you are it!! Thank you for taking the time and making the effort to show the world how Bawstin's accent should be learnt. Greetings from Colombia! I'll always have fond memories of Bawstin. Boahston strong!
You're killing me!!! My mom grew up in Field's Corner, you sound just like her. Ice cream at Seymour's after the movie at the Neponset.Drive In, 25 cent cannolis at Bombadari's Bakery on Dot Ave, a couple of strings at the bowling alley on Adams Street. Saw some great movies the Lowe's Theater for a dollar. Wow, all of those great memories are coming back like they happened yesterday. You can take the boy out of Boston, but you can never take the Boston out of the boy.
SHAREN!! omg I love your vids I LOVE THE BAWSTIN accent is the best I was there for a second and couldn't leave the accent behind your vids are helping me perfect it!! can't wait to visit again!!
Love this! I live in California now, and after seeing this I'm home sick. So glad I found your video. Now I'm gonna share it with my California friends so they can see where I came from. :O)
i'm finnish, and became friends with a lady last year who moved here from rhode island a year or two ago. i used to poke fun at her accent, like the whole leaving the R's at home thing (i swear, it took me so many "WHAT?"s to realize she was saying "mirror"), but i've just grown to love it over time. kind of trying to learn it myself. this video is excellent
I love it! I miss home so much! I live in the south now and it's funny cuz my name is Tarshia but when they ask me I say my name is Tasha and they ask me what happened to the R in your name? I respond I left it in Bawsin lol... After being here for 20 years I still can't say sparring I say Spaghin. Wicked cook vid!
My mom was born in Quincy and raised in Lynn. She talks just like you :) Then she moved to CT, and thats where I'm from lol, so I always poked fun at her for how she said "party" sounded like "potty" :)
Hi James, thanks for posting. I have such good memories about Dorchester. Is the Sunbeam bread store still there? My grandmother used to work there and she always brought us bread. We lived over on Lolly Street, near Seymour's ice cream and me and my brother used to ride our bikes over and get free Hoodsies everyday in the summer. It was fun. Too bad the Minot School is now a health center. I still have my kindergarten class picture (that's a long time ago).
This is great! I live in SAWgus (saugus) and the city is my favorite place(: I feel like a true Bostonian because I knew everything you were talking about the whole time haha
LOVE IT! I am Boston born and bred...doing time in the South now. My biggest fear is losing my Boston accent before we can move back to civilization! THANKS!!!!!
There is sooo much for you to see. Make sure you take a walk along the waterfront, near the Aquarium. This leads around & into the North End. Then make sure you go to the public gardens over near Newbury & Boylston Streets. That's a nice walk too. If you haven't yet ever, make sure you atleast go and check out Fanuel Hall marketplace. It's really touristy, but you should see it. Then you could go & take a walk around Fenway & Kenmore Square. You can get to all these places on the subway.
I have family from Boston. I'm from Minnesota. I love the Boston accent! Great video! I got made fun of for saying "pop" instead of "soda" in downtown Boston!
Such a freaking cool accent. I'm British, but I'm always doing American accents, and this one's pretty much the best. First really loved it after the movie The Depahted ;)
I live in the Springfield Mass area and have never been to Boston. I've gone as far as Miami, but never Boston and its a little more than an hour away haha. I'm planning on going soon though, what are some must-sees? :)
The Thing On The Doorstep Lovecraft. She says she wants "Posh" Boston which I struggle with as I like to sound my ahs and forget the rs! Maybe I can send you what I've done so far so you can give your opinion/laugh at me! xx
@vida130 Hi there, thanks for watching and for commenting. Glad you like it, too! I have some problems with my own name too, Sharen, many of my friends from the Boston area just drop th "r" altogether and call me "Shwendy" LOL
Wow, that's wicked cool. I'm so glad you enjoyed my video. It's nice to receive such a great comment because every once and a while someone posts that I don't sound authentic or something like that. I really did grow up there so I don't know what to tell them. I'm glad you can testify that i sound "just like your mom" You made my night! You know there's a "Paht 2" that you'll probably like, too. Thanks again!
Hey great video! I'm an Aussie and I'm trying to learn certain parts of this accent for a character. If you can help me this would be awesome!!! I'm wondering if you are able to help me with the pronunciation of certain vowel sounds within the 'Bawstin accent.' I'm wondering how o sounds in words such as 'Mom, glove, some etc.' and also in words such as 'cow, how, towel etc.' If you can shed some light on this matter, that would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!!!
LOL, we tried to ask people where is the 95 and they would ask us where are you going? We would not tell them b/c I lived in Lynn. Coming from the Airport in Boston.
Hi, that's my 20 year old son, Carmen. Sadly, he died in a car accident in 2008, two years before I made this video. I always, even today, keep his picture near me.
Yep....that's why I talk about "Daw-chestah" in the video. We also lived over on Woodrow Ave, which is not part of Dorchester, I think it's Roxbury. Then we moved to Quincy when I was about 10 yrs old.
I'm sure it is. We all have an accent to share. It makes us all unique. I love to listen to people talk and try and figure out where they are from based on their accent.
I wonder our accent is only limited to eastern Mass and Rhode Island. I lived in Greenfield in my earlier years and noticed that the non-rhotic accent was almost non-existent.
I grew up in Roslindale and went to elementary school at the Longfellow School, across from Christo's Market and in between Henry's variety store I was asked to spell and write "Boston" ... I was in the 3rd grade........I spelled it Bostin....... and got laughed at by my teacher........... none of my classmates knew what she was laughing at!!!!!!
@TheLadyjazzy1 Hi! Nice to meet you. Yes, the Minot School was a cute little school, it's been a health center for a long time now. I used to walk to kindergarten (under the expressway) from Lollie Street, over near Seymour's Ice Cream. I was 4 yrs old. lol Check out "My Bawstin Accent Paht 2"
@Nomaanification Don't be scared. You'll do just fine. What is the name of the play and what part are you playing? My son just finished acting in a play in Boston called "The Friends of Eddie Coyle" He played a hit man. It was awesome. Luckily we're from the Boson area so the accent was already there in him. It was also a movie based in the Boston area in the 70's. Find it somehow and watch it. The accents are right on.
@BeccaHennessy Hi Becca.....i graduated from QHS. I'm there often. I still "pahk my cah at the t" and take the train in town whenever i get a chance. Nice to "meet" you!
South Bostonian without a thick accent! How did I manage? No clue... but I found it amazing how I pronounce Boston exactly like that. I still say my arrrs though. :P
Well, Salem is a beautiful town. What is it about Salem that makes you love it so? I love being near the ocean though, so for me either Cape Cod or anywhere along the coast.
@muffitt142 absolutely. this is just an exaggeration of the accent, but, I have to admit, when I am nervous or excited about something I revert back to my old accent. I love it, but I try to keep it in check.
@zhugeliang4 Hi, that's wonderful that you will be moving to Boston....it is a beautiful city! My accent in this video is a bit "heavy" just to exaggerate the accent. I Had lots of fun making the video.
This is probably the best Boston accent video I have seen on the net. Thanks Sharen

LOL, we tried to ask people where is the 95 and they would ask us where are you going? We would not tell them b/c I lived in Lynn. Coming from the Airport in Boston.
The word "Burro". I use Spanish to mess around and flirt. I use English to be rude. Two different cultures but I love it.

@muffitt142 absolutely. this is just an exaggeration of the accent, but, I have to admit, when I am nervous or excited about something I revert back to my old accent. I love it, but I try to keep it in check.
People down here always ask why I don't have an accent haha. If there were towns named Quincy, Peabody, and Worcester, I'll show them that accent!
@Nomaanification Thank u! The word, "for" sounds like "faw." For example, this sentence: "What ah ya do'n that faw?" lol
