When Mahavira saw naked Gosala he was impressed with his personality and became naked and without possessions too. (He began as white -clothed jain after Parśva's principle). Mahavira's reform started with naked jain monks. Candidate to ajivika monk had his hair pulled and ajivikas had own salekhana to burn substance of sins by inner fire. It was achieved by dehydration during half of year. Gosala was Tirthankara some years before Mahavira. Dispute was about who can be Tirthankara in the same time. Gosala was villager of low class but Mahavira was a prince. Under convenant Tirthankara must be of higher class rather in Ikshvaku lineage, so Gosala was denigrated in scriptures.
