  • The newest addition to the trombone valve family is the S.E. Shires Twin Valve. First rumored two years ago, the Twin Valve is a fresh look at the rotary valve concept and utilizes two smaller valves to take the place of one larger valve while providing a very different blow and response. Many players have been impressed by the response and stability of this new valve; take a listen and let us know what you think in the comments!

I can't wait to see Shires rig up a bass trombone with this design.

That would be wild. FOUR valves on a bass!

I have tried all the valves and the dual valve come in a very close second to the axial flow. The axial flow does, however, intrude on the jaw line and is uncomfortable during long sessions. There are so many options and adjustments on a custom Shires that I’ll bet you could minimize the rotator pop for orchestral work.

This valve concept amuses me, because it takes the valve “problem” and completely turns it upside down; Not enough room in one valve? Just add another!
I look forward to seeing how this valve will turn out and what people will think.

Indeed! I have a suspicion that it is not exactly the powerhouse Shires might like it to be; that being said, we are still pretty early in the game (relatively speaking.) In a few years I think we'll have a better idea of the wider trombone community's thoughts on it...

If I were to ever think about purchasing a new horn, it's either this one or one of the newly introduced Peter Steiner models!

How do you account for having both valves in the airstream when the f attachment is not engaged? Doesn't the design double the resistance the valve adds to the open horn?

Why the Shilke instead of your Bach 5G?

I’ve been using the Schilke 51 more lately; compared to the 5G it has more body and depth to the sound for me right now. In the future, who knows ;)

@@SchmittMusicTromboneShop It's funny sometimes - I moved from my Schilke 51 to a DW 5AL (which I bought from you in Minnesota despite living in Boston) and the sound got bigger and darker, and I had to work a lot more. Recently I have been rehabbing my (Oldddd) tuba chops and playing on an old Conn Helleberg mouthpiece, and suddenly my 5AL feels a LOT smaller.. Really depends on what you're playing, what you're playing it on, what your routine is like, what your goals are. I still use the 51 on my baritone, and i very much like the mouthpiece, although you could hand me pretty much any Bach classic mpc from a 6AL on bigger, and I like them all. Just a question of having the time to keep up on a 4G or a 1 - that time no longer exists in my one hour a day playing world.

Around $5700.00 USD; still one of the most unique valve setups on the market IMHO!

I was skeptical at first as well but it actually is a simple and elegant solution to a rather complex geometric issue; also, there is a unique feel to string linkages that I appreciate...
