Creative Arts Theatre & School (CATS) announces its upcoming production of Freckleface Strawberry the Musical. The show is an adaptation of the best-selling children's book written by award winning actress Julianne Moore. Playing for one weekend only, April 26-28, Freckleface Strawberry the Musical will be presented at Lamar High School.
Wanting to be like everyone else is normal; it's a common childhood experience. Kids want to look and act like all their friends and anything that differentiates a kid from the crowd is a big no-no. Freckleface Strawberry is a normal seven year old girl with plenty of friends. Although none of her friends look anything like her. As her nickname suggests, she has red hair and is covered in freckles. She hates her freckles and desperately tries to get rid of them so she doesn't stick out like a sore thumb in school. She tries different ways to hide them before ultimately hiding herself. Her musical journey to self-acceptance is complete when she discovers that her classmates missed her while she lived undercover. They teach her that everyone is different and the most important thing is to have friends.
Directed by CATS favorite, Melanie Mason, Communication Studies and Broadcast Lecturer at University of Texas Arlington, Freckleface Strawberry the Musical is a touching and funny story about self-acceptance. Mason, a redhead who sports a freckle or two of her own, considers this show the culmination of her "Season of the Redheads," having directed Annie and Hollywood Arms (Carol Burnett's biographical story), earlier this year in Arlington. The fresh-faced all-youth cast will also be guided by Musical Director Marlene Bigley and Choreographer Dawn Prejean.
