In today's video I chop up my favourite philodendron to propagate - my philodendron splendid! I've been putting off chopping this plant because I've been scared to lose the top section of growth, but I've been wanting to try Sydney Plant Guy 's chop and extend propagation method for a while, so I thought I'd take a risk today and put it to the test.
Chopping up plants to propagate can be scary, as there's always a chance propagation won't be successful, but I'm hoping my plant has a strong enough root system to continue to grow and thrive!

Jan certainly grows the biggest leaves indoors I’ve seen on UA-cam.

Good choice, in my opinion, to cut a bit lower and save those roots for the upper part of the plant.

I am quite new in this "hobby", discovered Jan's content quite early and started all my climbing plants with moss-poles. I think the "chop-and-extend' is a quite intelligent and logical method.

I believe sydney plant guy chops it and then leaves it on the pole to callous before he dissasembles the pole. I did this with my immature cebu blue and chopped it in several places cuz i wanted it on a thicker pole and to have a fuller plant. I left it for a week, and when i put it back on to a bigger pole it didnt even skip a beat!
I love Jan @sydneyplantguy, I still wish to have a Glorious as beautiful as his.
you need a chop stix for getting that moss out of the roots and moss pole. thats whats used for bonsai. greatest tool ever lol
Hi Clair, With the moss pole, I use wire cutters an use the long ones sticking out to bend over an under the other side. No zip ties required. 💚
I recently acquired a Philodendron Splendid, I am waiting for the newest leaf to harden off before I transfer her to a moss pole. This was so helpful and am sure I will be referring back to this vlog when she's ready to be extended. Can't wait to see the updates. Cheers!
Hello Claire, I'm a big fan of Jan's method. I've already built a few moss poles and always followed his instructions very closely. He uses a very airy potting mix, so I'm curious how your mix works. Unfortunately, you chose the extension so short. If everything works out, you'll have to expand again pretty soon. Thank you for your videos.🌱
Plants by Melissa does this all the time too. She just repots the top in soil. The moss roots sustains the plant while it roots. Hers have all been successful so far.

I think it is easier to pot the top section first and then add the extension. Love the splendid, mine is on a moss pole and I hope it will grow big leaves like yours and Jan's do

Love your videos Claire, but am I the only one who winces watching you chop up plants with standard scissors?
I think next time, what you could do is chop it at the main stem the day before before removing the bottom half. Then it has a little time to harden off and dry before replanting into a new medium at the bottom. PS: I love you and your videos x

I can't believe your Splendid has given such massive leaves in the UK! 😍 I live in the Netherlands and thought that the light conditions here are not good enough for such large leaves. One month ago I got a Splendid with 3 small leaves (about 15 cm long), one is very sad and way smaller, bright white and no longer growing... She hasn't changed at all since I bought her? Maby I'm just impatient😳I put her on a mini moss pole and hope for the best. 🙏 Your beautiful Philo gives me so much hope! I can't wait for the video you show us how big she's gotten!🍀
I live in the Netherlands and I just got my splendid and glorious to make a cataphyll and get pretty big leaves. You can do this!
Do you have a grow light? Without them I wouldn't be able to keep them thriving (even through winter).

After making the cut, Sydney plant guy would leave this cut for a day or two before separating the pole… just so that it callous enough.
Jans secret weapon is the amount of sun he gets in Sydney. I’m growing 8 poles currently and they are on fire 🔥. Growth is insane. Unfortunately here in Washington state fungus gnats are a serious issue, light exposure as well. So far things look stellar. Excellent video!!! Someday I’ll get my 2 favorite philos…. Glorious and verocosum.
The cut and dry portion of the chop is critical. Not enough people really understand why it’s so important. I use a mixture of hort charcoal and freshly ground cinnamon on the wound and wait a minimum of 4 hours. Same for cuttings. So far this has worked incredibly. By far more effective than just air.

@@scottfletcher1956 so you’re just embellishing on the original comment. Depending on conditions and the thickness of the stem, the cut should dry for 24 hrs or at least overnight.

I love how others are always so scared to chop or disturb their plants while I'm over here mutilating and repotting with no hesitations. 😅 I could understand the hesitation on more expensive plants though.

Any issue burying the petiole on the bottom leaf? I’m planning a chop and extend this spring and how much to put in the soil is the question. Intuitively, I’d cut further below the leaf, or take it off. Am I overthinking?

What plastic sheets do you use for moss poles? My poles are dry within 2 days. :/ maybe because they are not constantly moist, my plants don't grow aerial roots?
Do you know keiki paste? It should help waking up sleeping eyes. Maybe you can entcourage the lower part of the plant to get fuller

Great video as always! As the growing season is approaching, I was wondering if you could make a video on fertilizer? I went to my local garden store recently and was overwhelmed/confused as what to choose (granules vs sticks vs liquid), do different plants need different fertilizer, and what was the best NPK ratio so I ended up leaving with nothing 😂

Hello, so scary to hear the snap sound ! I am not still at this point with my philodendron, I am just a beginner in moss poles and I have a question, do you know about tree fern fiber, it is less hydrophobic than sphagnum moss, and easier to keep hydrated, but it is more expensive and for the moment very difficult to find in France, even on Amazon, as it is coming from New Zealand. I was wondering if it is worth the pain and what people here are thinking about it ? thanks
You probably shouldn't sterilise metal with hydrogen peroxide... as you'll rust the metal as peroxide is a strong oxidising agent...

Hi, do you have any idea why an anthurium clarinerviums leaves would all start pointing downwards? They’re not drooping and they’re not moving towards light (the light is coming from above) tia

I’m curious as to why you made your extension so short? By the time you get one new leaf you’ll need to extend it again? One solid long piece is a lot more stable than many smaller bits all joined together
I'd have made it longer if I had more wire, but sadly that was the last of it 💚
What kind of plastic do you use for the back of the mosspoles? And where did you get it? Been looking into making my own mosspoles because the clear mosspoles are so expensive to buy here!
Purchased mine from Calder Art Supplies. A2 Polypylene Plastic Sheets 0.8mm thick. Hope this helps they got clear, frosted and other colours. 😊
