    Marvel went bankrupt a year after Harlan made this prediction.

    • @psf334
      @psf334 10 років тому

      so? he didn't predict that would enter bankruptcy. he predicted they (along with dc) wouldn't be around, which of course they are.

    • @Sleeper99999

      At the time there was a real chance that Marvel would have been liquidated and its characters sold off piecemeal. Two corporate raiders, Ron Perelman and Carl Icahn, drove the company into the ground fighting over it. So it was a plausible prediction.

    I think if he gave some more modern games a shot, such as Silent Hill 2, he might change his mind when it comes to games "not teaching anything". Regardless of the disagreements I have with him concerning video games, Harlan Ellison is still the man.

      I'm a huge Harlan fan and usually agree with him, but when talking about videogames and the internet, he comes off as an out of touch old man. It's also ironic he's not self aware enough to realize, the way he talks about videogames, is the same way his parent's generation talked about comics.

      @@StudioChojin You know who else didn't like video games? Ray Bradbury. These guys were prolific writers; they wrote, they lived. When I need to create, I avoid video games. They're terrible for concentration. And I say this as someone who enjoys video games immensely. Comic books, though a shorter format, are still about reading and ideas. I'm not saying video games cannot have artistry to them, but don't kid yourself either that most of them aren't mindless forms of entertainment.

    • @StudioChojin
      @StudioChojin 5 років тому

      @Bluemoon In The Daylight That doesn’t surprise me, Bradbury was from the same generation as Harlan. Just because you play video games, that doesn’t preclude you from having an active life. _when I need to create I avoid videogames_ No duh. No one is saying you should actively be playing video-games as you’re writing, and out of curiosity, what have you written? I’m not challenging you, you’re the one bringing it up, where can i find your work? I find a huge source of inspiration from video games, you can see it in my UA-cam videos as well as my artwork. Which is easily found on UA-cam, google, deviant art, and my Twitter/Instagram.
      Are there mindless video games? Yes. But there are also games like a Shadow of Colossus or The Last Of Us which tell compelling narratives and engage the audience in ways that aren’t possible in other mediums. Just as there are mindless comic books, but there are also books like Watchmen and Maus. You are only doing yourself a disservice if you are going to adopt an arbitrary elitist attitude to medium, that judging from your statement, you seem to know nothing about.

      @@StudioChojin, I didn't say video games cannot be art, but there sure is a glut of mindless shooters and the like. I've been a fervent enthusiast of games since arcades and Atari 2600, and I'm always on the watch for growth and depth in the genre yet I find too much of it lacking. For every SotC, there's several FPSs, not that there's anything inherently wrong with that subgenre, but it does fill much of the field. I tend to find much more interest in indie games, though too much of it relies on crutches like retro/nostalgia and/or obvious meta-commentary.
      Meanwhile, I've encountered so many more interesting indie comic books that manage to fully utilise visual and written narration. Subjects like rape, gender, coming-of-age and more handled in a more artful nature than the often exploitative ways in some video games.
      As I get older I've found games along with television worsen my attention span and muddle my thoughts due to the drip-feed like nature of instant gratification. I don't have this issue when reading, even comic books as they still require a focus to detail that isn't always present in many games. Again, I'm not saying all games, though a good chunk of them tend to fall on a face-value level of understanding and lack depth.
      As for writing, I'm currently working on a few novels, and hope to get published in the near future. I find playing little to no games helps me to concentrate and solve the many issues that occur in fiction. To use those problem solving abilities on a video game would be to spread me thin. It's the same when I draw. I need to focus and strengthen my attention span.

      @@StudioChojin, one other thing I found was that it helped to avoid video games from influencing my writing. I found it caused me to focus far too much on visual descriptions and action. A lot of video games can also get very ham fisted and clunky.
      If you gain something from video games, more power to you. But in my experience it tends to weaken my overall writing abilities.

    I never saw these when they first aired (over the years, my only interests in the Sy-Fy Channel were the daily reruns of "The Outer Limits," and the NYE "Twilight Zone" Marathon), so its a treat to see all of these commentaries by one of my favorite writers.
    I gather that these segments were part of some larger "magazine" series, and the affable other guy was the host?

      no he didn't. "in 5 or 6 years...dc and marvel will not be around as we know them today." even you admit that at least half his prediction is wrong (dc didn't get bought by anyone.) and i'd say that a marvel comic reader couldn't tell from reading the comics that marvel had new ownership. so marvel comics are around pretty much exactly as he knew them back then.

      I apologize, but you are slightly misinformed. DC was bought off by Warner Bros.(now Time-Warner) in the 1970s. Now the landmark DC publishing HQ in NYC is in the process of phasing out as they're moving publishing operations to Hollywood. Ellison was slightly inaccurate, but he was absolutely right about DC phasing out into a corporate collective.

      @Diakron79 10 років тому

      Irv Pinsky Sir, you said in your text one month ago "(dc didn't get bought by anyone.)" I clarified the misinformation. Now you claimed that " DC was owned by warner when ellison filmed this rant." Does this mean you that you're contradicting, or does this mean you forgot to say you've acknowledged your mistake from the previous statement, but believe Ellison is still wrong about Marvel being bought out? I understand his predictions were inaccurate, but Ellison is no psychic, he was just making a worst case scenario in the state of things. They weren't meant to be accurate, just speculative.

    Jerrick went on to a career doing the news at Fox/ News Corp. Mainly Fox 29 in Philly, and also on Fox & Friends (so I heard, I only see that show when they say stupid crap that late night shows play). I'm sure Harlan would have some great comments on Mike all these years later. Which makes Harlan's first ever commentary on Sci-Fi Buzz that much better. He burned Rush Limbaugh in that.
