  • The New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) is set to commence the much-anticipated Emergency Beach Nourishment Dredging Project in North Wildwood next week. Spearheaded by Governor Phil Murphy, this initiative aims to replenish the North Wildwood beaches just in time for the summer season. Here's what residents and visitors need to know about the upcoming construction.
    Project Timeline and Preparation
    Preparation for the project is already in progress, with H & L Contracting and Great Lakes Dredge and Dock (GLDD) as the primary contractor and sub-contractor, respectively. Equipment mobilization is slated to begin the week of May 20, with sand pumping expected to start during or before the first week of June.
    Construction Plan
    The sand pumping operation will begin at 7th Avenue, moving south to north, and will wrap around the jetty at 2nd Avenue and John F. Kennedy Blvd. Once this section is completed, the contractors will return to 7th Avenue and continue south.
    Beach Access and Safety Measures
    Construction will proceed in approximately 1,000-foot increments along the beach, and sections under active work will be closed to public access. These areas will be clearly marked with posts and signs indicating closure. NJDOT, in collaboration with the contractor, aims to reopen sections of the beach to the public as soon as it is safe.
    Police Department and Beach Patrol members will monitor these areas to ensure public safety. Even in sections that appear to be free of construction, beachgoers should be cautious of dredge pipes that may be lying across the beach. Access over these pipes will be allowed only if they are outside the construction zones, with ramps provided to facilitate pedestrian movement to and from the ocean side.
    Staging Areas and Parking Closures
    NJDOT and the contractors will stage trailers and equipment at the following off-beach locations:
    6th-7th Avenues (landward side of the bulkhead between the bulkhead and playground equipment)
    15th Avenue & Beach Municipal Parking Lot
    16th-17th Avenues (landward side of the dune between vehicle access and dune)
    During the project, the 15th Avenue Beach Municipal Lot and the LSV Parking Area at 15th Avenue will be closed to public parking. Additional traffic and parking areas may also face temporary closures.
    Project Completion and Updates
    The Emergency Beach Nourishment Dredge Project is anticipated to be completed around July 4, 2024, though this timeline may vary depending on the final project design, which is still being finalized by the City, NJDOT, and the State.
    City of North Wildwood and NJDOT officials will provide frequent updates to keep everyone informed about closures and interruptions. For more information, residents and visitors can contact the City at (609) 522-6464.
    The NJDOT and the City of North Wildwood apologize for any inconvenience and appreciate the cooperation and support from the public during this essential project.

    When I was a kid in the 1950’s the water went under the boardwalk at 16 th st . At high tide . the beach goers had to use the sandy beach on the west side of the boardwalk. My Grandmother had a house at 410 13 Av just east of surf . This is before the built Kennedy Blvd. there was plenty of beach and dunes on the beach at 13th . There was a grill on the beach between 12th and 11th that had the best hot dogs ! They split the dogs on the flat top with a weight on top to keep them flat while cooking. Delish ! We were from Brooklyn ny and spent 2 weeks every summer in the North Wildwood . My mom loved Zaberes on the boardwalk as well as Angelsea . Love your videos. We live now in San Jose California.

      I've been coming down to Wildwood since 1954 I remember those days when the water used to be up under the boardwalk and under the piers 49 days until I'm down to Wildwood

    Hello Joey.....Thank You as always for keeping us all up to date with was's going on down South. It's nice to see that they are finally focusing on the Northern portion of the Wildwoods. My family and I would stay at the Acropolis back in the 80's and trust me the beach was tiny back then. However, the memories are everlasting and wonderful. BTW - Just adored your video about the "Madison Resorts". What a ROOF LINE......it's gorgeous. Hope you and your Honey get to stay there soon and all of us can enjoy it along with the both of you. - Take Care, Be Well & Cheers

    One of the things I like about Wildwood and Wildwood Crest is the natural soft fine sand. Been on other beaches that have had dredged sand put in it dredged sand is often courser with little rocks and shell pieces in it. Hopefully the sand off North wildwood and in the inlet is more fine…

      I hope you get "Your Beach" back very soon. It's been disappearing for decades. I'm glad they are finally focusing on the North End. Just be ready for the smell. The dredging process is very, very smelly. They usually use sand that's about a mile or so off shore and trust me it stinks. The great news is, you'll have your beach back very soon. - Cheers

    What are they doing differently this time? Not trying to be contrary but for decades they have pumped sand onto North Wildwood’s beach. Sometimes they finish pumping sand and in few months we get a storm and much of what was just pumped onto beach disappears back into the ocean.

    • @paulglover6525
      @paulglover6525 4 місяці тому +1

      Yes. At some point in time NW will have to give up its beach because of mother nature. Years ago the Army Corp of Engineers told them not to bother replenishing the beach because it was going to go by the wayside eventually.

    • @mgratk
      @mgratk 12 днів тому

      Generally, left to nature, barrier islands sort of tumble over themselves as they naturally get pushed toward the mainland. Humans interfere with natural sand movement with jetties and sometimes extremely temporary "replenishment."

    The beaches were fine just the way they were with regular umbrellas. There's no reason to put these humongous tents. It's stupid. It's idiotic, and there's no reason for it. Umbrellas work for years. They should keep it that way.

  • @nickcef
    @nickcef 4 місяці тому +1

    I know I've said this before, but why doesn't NJ take the example from NY and install long rock jetties along the beach every few blocks? Yes, I know it's ugly and disrupts the currents, but it's probably the only economical way to maintain the integrity of the beaches and prevent longshore drift.

    Good day, sir. My first question is why is there a Jeep parked on the beach? I was under the impression that there are not supposed to be any motorized vehicles on the beach.
    Second question. As you pointed out, this replenishment has been a long time coming. So what changed, seemingly overnight, to get the ball rolling? At what cost will this come to the taxpayers and residents? What kind of backroom deals were made to get this to happen? All of this time with no movement and all of a sudden, someone waved a magic wand and it's happening. I've been around long enough to know that something isn't given for free. Politics are dirty and this deal smells pretty rotten.

    Also cant believe there is no beach any more at 3rd st?? When i was down there one yr in September at the firemens convention, a guy drove into the water at the beginning of the beach when it used to be there. It used to go out pretty far there. Just shows u how erosion and climate change have taken away the beaches. I knew it would happen, but never thought wildwoods would be affected because they always had such long, long, long beaches!!! Just amazing!!🥺🥺🥺🤪🤪🤪😥😥😥😥😒😒😒😒😰😰😰😰😰😥😥😥🤪🤪🤪🤪🥺🥺🥺🥺

      This happens every so often it seems independent of climate change. The same washes south and ends up on wildwood’s beach. Read comments above. The beach used to be further back in north wildwood.
