My g-g-grandfather's brother, Ammon Loss, moved to Montrose in 1907 and worked at the Wilson-Kyle Orchards. I've always wanted to visit but have never made it there yet.
Montrose is a great place for hunting, fishing, dirt biking, four-wheeling, and hiking. It's a conservative community, with almost all elected officials in the city and county being Republican, if that's you thing.
Not anymore. too many outsiders in city gov. with their promises which are lies to make this small city something most of we originals do not want. STOP moving here.! new comers complaining about farm smells next to their new homes. Sell and move then. Our small city is just that, too many people. congested traffic, and yes we have a homeless population, crime & a huge drug problem. Questionable deaths that are attributed to drug overdoses or accidents. All swept under the rug. Corrupt law enforcement/ city government. oh yes lets not forget about the housing shortage. Sky high rentals, not much to rent. Be lucky to find a rental. Farm land is being taken over by subdivisions. Must be all those outsiders moving in. Come visit that is great but go back home. I know many more have the same thought. And before you all call me Karen, I was born in the area. We have seen the changes. It is no longer a comforting neighbor helping neighbor place anymore.
Did you you all get that first bit. "When the Ute were driven from THEIR Land? Chief Ouray wanted peace for all. But no we the white man, well not me but people in the past, wanted the land so they took it. Now outsiders are moving in and making it theirs, changing our small lovely city into something most of us originals do not want. The beauty of our surroundings is to alluring I guess.
Before the tunnel it was nothing but adobe and chico brush. The Ute Museum sits on some of the property that was Chief Ouray's. And the Western Museum, though very interesting is a bunch of old buildings and thousands of items, that were moved and placed there. It is not an original "town" but a portrayal. Way overpriced as is evrey thing for families to do except maybe the Ute museum. Most low income locals will never be able to visit.
We lived just up the road from Montrose by the airport in 1968 I was in the 3rd grade then. My dad was hard rock miner at I think the mine was called camp bird. I don't remember much about the area as at 8 your whole world is school and home. the school I went to was a one room school house just off the main highway from Grand Junction. Well at the time we lived there, we were welcomed by all our neighbors and for a kid of 8 life didn't get any better.
Great place to live? Yeah right. If you aren't native to the area, you aren't welcome. Trust me. I lived there for a year and a half and never felt welcome.
It is the wealthy outsiders that have made this so. It used to be neighbor helping neighbor. Friendly handshakes. Never had to lock doors or cars. Could carry our rifles in gun racks behind the seat of pickups and never have to worry about someone taking your stuff. Now we have people moving in buying up housing property renting out literal dumpy little homes for well over $1200. per month. Snobbish and wouldn't lift a pinky to help someone even jump a car because of a dead battery. Very sad to what is was growing up here to what it is now. PS. Sorry you felt unwelcome
