You forgot to mention, car battery DISCONNECTED. By all means, don't touch the resistors or the chips with a soldering iron - I've tried and destroyed my DIM. You need a heating gun as shown in the video. That said, my DIM also had several RA6 small resistors going bad which needed replacing (just heating/resolder them will only help for a while), so it's not only the chip connections that go bad. I had mine done by a TV shop who checked the entire board. Also check the resistors near the High beams indicator bulb, also go bad. You can also swap the DIM with same year and same 4 side numbers in the column (the 5th number doesn't matter)
Thanks for the comment. You don´t have to disconnect the battery but you can if you wish. I have done 100+ DIM-s with soldering iron and I have never destroyed any of them. the info display on the far left side was flickering and pixelated now it works fine, someone had worked on it before me it would seem, as the blue coat from the factory was missing.
thank you so much for your video it helped me alot in the end :)
Does anyone know the excat types of the resistor arrays RA3 (103) and RA4 (201)? I would highly appreciate a link to ebay seller etc. I have one spare cluster that is missing these resistor arrays and I would like to attempt a repair if I get the parts.
RA3 10 and 000 =10K ohms, RA4 20 and 0 = 200 ohms. The last number is how many zeros
@@lessurette4772 wow. do u know how to convert from similar clusters... my junkyard one has same pin connector, but comes up blank
I do see lot of them destroyed by really poor soldering skills. I am not telling that the areas soldered in this video will fix it 100% of the time but I rarely have to touch anything else (unless it has been "fixed" before).
@@HeapsofProjects When you keept the battery connected, did you got an SRS message ? Or maybe it happens only if we turn the key in the ignition ?
@@Peppermint1 yes, you only get it when you turn the key and DIM is not connected. Most of the time it is already on because of the faulty DIM and needs erasing anyway.
@@HeapsofProjects any idea on how to make your ownn OBD for these?
@@uRealReels what do you mean by that? You can make a device to run them using Arduino and CAN shield but thats bit of playing around. I have logged can commands from Vida DIM test and can run them up independently.
Will this work for any model Volvo, let*s say 1988 760 Turbo Intercooler, I know this is a newer model Volvo, but the pricipal is it the same, since this car is really elegant, and I like tolearn new things, this would be a great help,.
No, this only works for 2000-2003 S60/V70/S80/XC70/XC90.
@@HeapsofProjects just learning how easy it is to fix, and you don*t have to pay good money when you can fix it, and learn how to troubleshoot these problems, thanks.
is that the chip for the sps service lamp?
Can you specify the question?
@@HeapsofProjects my srs airbag is on. and my mechanic says that it is the speedometer that is the problem,,is that the problem you are doing on the video?
@@Jj-bq9of yes, SRS light is there and faulty connection to that will give you a SRS fault. This will fix that as well.
Hey ! Can i change the original DIM on my non R metre to a R metre? Do you think it’s gonna work?
If they are the same model (similar year and look) then yes but you will need to copy your software from the old cluster or get a DIM reload software loaded by the dealer.
Hey man i was wondering if you might be able to help fix a problem with my volvo c70(build year2000)info Panel. It only seems to work properly 15% of the time. When it doesnt it stops showing the speed the car is at and shows alot of warning signals...ive already tried swapping out the whole panel unit but that didint help.
Thanks in advance
Could be an ABS ecu problem. Have you tried to read the fault codes? Any warning lights on?
is there a way of reming the ABS bulb or changing it
What do you mean by that exactly?
@@HeapsofProjects it will fail the MOT here with it on so need to remove it if poss or do something so it goes off with the ignition light.. it's only a sensor but sick of changing them
@@fredstraw They are LED-s so sure you could figure something out but I would rather fix the problem. If it is a P2 Volvo then it is rather unusual to have problems with the sensors. More often it is the ABS ring that cracks around the front driveshaft. And that is an easy fix.

Hi I have a 2011 xc60 and the odometer/fuel display has blanked does the same soldering spots apply or are they different. Im in Australia and can’t find anyone to repair it.
No, it would be totally different. How did it start? Probably best option would be to get a second hand one and do a DIM reload in the dealership.
@@HeapsofProjects it started semi blanking out during hot weather and would appear when it cooled down. This went on for a while and now the display has blanked out for good. I suspect it’s a dry joint but not sure which points to resolder.
@@niksakoutis9399 It probably is a dry joint then but this would just need some testing to find it.
Are you still in Australia, I live in Sydney and have 2 to repair?
Yes I am, in WA.
@@HeapsofProjects I just removed the cluster from my 2002 XC70, ready to send it off and get it repaired. Would you be able to do the repair if I sent it to you please, and how much would it cost?
I have a 04 S60R with a clock that runs fast, im continually turning the time back.
Any ideas what the cause may be?
I'm leaning towards a bad crystal oscillator.
How fast is it running?
@@HeapsofProjects
About 5ish minutes per week, it's not a lot but it's annoying.
@@johno9507 It could be crystal oscillator or a bad solder joint. These newer DIM-s have lot less problems but they still have some. Could probably try changing the oscillator and resoldering the involved circuit. Bit more work to disassemble tho.
@@HeapsofProjects
Thanks for your thoughts.
I've found dry solder joints in other parts of the car so it wouldn't surprise me if that's the case.

I have another question, do you know of any way to improve the DIM illumination on the S60R?
The S60R has 'spot lights' that shine of the face of the dials, but is there any way to add backlights like the standard S60?
I’ve got a 2006 xc90 would this be the same ?
No, it is most likely different. What is the problem with yours?
@@HeapsofProjects Speedo and tach and temp gauge stops intermittently, also seem to be getting multiple messages anti skid , brake failure, check engine, service engine, maintainence needed .... Had cem redone at xemodex as well as dem .

@@patrickwhitney2337 If it is a newer DIM (2006 it would be) then it is bit more work to pull it apart as you need to carefully remove the speedo needles. Most likely it is a dry solder joint but I can't really tell you where it could be.

Would this work on a DIM for a 2000 volvo s40?
They are different so it wouldn't apply to any other than the ones mentioned in the description.

It depends where you live, there are places is US and Europe where you can it shipped to.

I can do the basic soldering byt that black chip is a nono for me. I'd need a needle-thin soldering tip and a huge magnifying glass. I have 20/20 vision but i'm not trusting my sausage-finger and impatient mind with something this delicate.
If you have a look at some videos about SMD soldering then you see that there are different techniques, some of them might suit you better. You will still need to practice so grab an old motherboard or radio and see how it goes.
I did the exact points in your DIY and sadly didn’t help me at all (cluster still dead as a doornail)
Any advice to try and save it or should I bite the bullet and replace it?
Is it totally dead or sometimes works? You can pull it apart and connect only the PCB to your car. While ignition is on you can try to pressurise different components and see if something happens.
@@HeapsofProjects Took it apart again to double check, and several parts of the circuit board looks miscolored, as if they’ve been overheated.
None of those are areas I’ve been close to resolder.
I’ve tried both before and after, and the instrument cluster suddenly works for a mimute or two before it dies again. Tried pushing on it, hitting the top of the cluster with no real hope sadly.
Might just go ahead and try it once again, if not I’ll bite the bullet and go for a second hand one.

I'm repairing the newer style gauge (with LED backlights) out of a 2004? XC90. I re-soldered the little white chips and the big processor chips and got the right two LCD displays unscrambled. Left-most display still has the "SRS Airbag Service Urgent" message, but the main problem is the gauge needles are all still dead at 'zero'. Any ideas?
SRS message will not clear itself and needs a diagnostic tool to clear it. I have found that newer ones usually have problemis with resistor arrays, you can try resoldering them.
