Um mean of course keep the main ppl but there would have to be some changes because of culture differences from Japan that's a given and maybe even some name changes. Anyway there are basically 3 live action movies, 2 tv movies and a fourth film coming this year in Japan, at this point it's time to shake it up abit and if you want exact same material plz go watch those.
I think that Death Note would benefit WITHOUT the hard R rating.The fact that a lot of the deaths contain less gore in the source material is what strenghtens the manga/anime's theme. All those gruesome deaths is best left to the imagination. Seeing it in all it's glory will just numb the viewer after awhile.
I'm not concerned about the casting. My real concern is that the director was celebrating that the US adaptation is going to apparently have a lot of gore and violence and a lot of sex. Just because of it releasing on Netflix.
Biggest weakness of Light was that he wasn't creative. He could literally have hidden ALL those deaths by creatively coming up with ways for those people to die outside of just writing their names in the DeathNote. So it would be reasonable that they make Light more intelligent in the movie by making him USE that ability, leaving plenty of room for more violent deaths.
I think the only reason for the "R" rating is because (A= the subject matter, they probably (A) thought that source material and or the subject matter deserves an R rating. Or (B) thought the Heart Attacks are graphic enough. And (B= the amount of graphic violence and or the amount of language they are planing to put in to the live action movie🤓

Tbh the only deaths I would consider 'R rated' would be the truck death, the prison test (L do you know?) and the bus death in my opinion...
