Alyson loved her shoutout 😂 she says ‘hey pop!’
Uncle Crystal? Yu bin hiding?? LOL
Cool shout out... my grandkids always point out my boo boos too♥️👍😎
Your name on UA-cam is not Uncle Crystal?🤷🤣🤣😂
@@aussiebloke609 😅 Not on purpose lol. Just busy with work and kids. 😁
There you are.... lol That was a super cool shout out.
Good to see that the speedwrench has not gone by the way side!
I keep one in my toolbox at work, with a 3/4" socket on it, to run the screw in or out, in Kurt Vises, when setting up a job. One one or two, doing it with a regular vise handle is a minor annoyance. Doing the same on say, six of them, becomes tedium.
We use them a lot at my shop too
It's always a pleasure to work with someone who knows what they're doing. I'm impressed by the way you and Al work together. You both know exactly what needs to be done and in what order and get it done without a lot of talk.
right, because using ratchets to pull apart a low tech BBM is real brain surgery🤣🙄
Boring as shit to watch
I like when Tony is dolo, I don't care about the hangers on to his celebrity. They're corny. Watching an engine being disassembled without talk is akin to watching mold spores form on bread.

No pushrods, must not have measured for them yet. All in all, looks to be a great start to a motor, I’m sure when you guys are done with it, it will be A ripper!
This is the beauty of two guys that know what they are doing working together.
Great video! Thank you for taking us into the mystery 440. Excellent catch on the bent rod. Looking forward to seeing more and definitely looking forward to seeing / hearing it run.
Boy the bad parts and rip-off's are way out of hand. The last 2 years started with the engine letting go in my 1972-74-77 dodge w200 4x4 club cab so I decided to rebuild another 360 I had sitting around, put flat top hypers, lunati voodoo cam, had a set heads sitting on the shelf for 8 years that a shop rebuild, I port matched and lightly touched up, got a McCord gasket set with the kit. Couple hundred miles and the intake gasket goes out on heat crossover and pumps exhaust and carbon throughout the engine. Replaced and next couple hundred miles develops water leak from timing chain cover along with oil from front crank seal, when disassembling the gaskets crumble away and seals rubber cracks when Flexed, Replaced them. In the meantime my dad dies and I'm forced to move are shop during which the head gasket blows and I drive it 10 miles with a way overloaded trailer, disassemble and find badly scored piston and cylinder and the head from the other side of the engine has a crack all the way around the valve seat and is ready to drop. Engine toast, no shop, tools all buried in storage and working out of town I order a Mabbco long block, (flat tops, cam upgrade, valve spring upgrade). Go to install and notice a rocker arm shaft is upside down and no double roller timing chain per cam upgrade. Correct the shaft and use double roller from other engine. Install and do cam break in and drive 10 miles to work next day and it blows a head gasket . Mabbco tells me I can pay the shipping back to them and they will look at it. No truck is losing me work and it's faster if I fix it. During disassembling I find the heads not properly torqued. Replace gaskets and get a few thousand miles on it and head gasket blows, disassemble and really look things over and see the pocket around the heat crossover had been filled with black rubber cement (pretty sure there's a crack there somewhere), and I think it's a 318 with .060 over pistons (numbers totally unreadable) and I can still get .025 of feeler guage between piston and cylinder wall. Severe ring witness marks and piston scoring, 8 lifters not rotating with 3 galling and wearing cam lobes, cam profile is like a stock 318 2bbl. Now during the 10000 miles in 2 years here is the rest of the parts list....I'm on the 7th starter (all had different problems) happens to be the nastiest looking one from my junk pile that works, I had a shop rebuild 2 of them that failed, 3rd distributor, 3rd electronic ignition box (one I tore apart to find the big transistor on the heat sink was just mocked up and had a tiny transistor inside packed in sand under the epoxy,,,from China),3rd ignition relay, 3rd alternator (using one from junk pile) 3rd coil. All going bad at different times and the replacement bad or short lived). 4th fuel pump .
Now I have no budget, losing work, on my bike during winter unable to haul tools to work, trying to junk pile together a 340, just need the crank turned, bearing and rings, but I'm still cooked on the heads, and I won't get into the parts issue with my 72 dart that was supposed to be my backup ride but start it after sitting for 6 months and have a rod knocking. The parts thing has put me on the ropes. Sorry I needed to vent
Love your channel, great intel, not sure if I need it with gas over 5 bucks a gallon but I still listen
Rockers are the complete Harland Sharp setup with hardware, shafts... Run the same on mine.. 👍🏼
I'm not too fond of the Harland Sharpe rockers. It's T&D, Hughes or Comp Cams Pro Magnum rockers for me.
That might be that special 1/2 year "Drag pack" pushrod delete motor ? Hard to tune apparently, but sweet when sorted.
It was built on a Monday in a far off land where push rods fly and connecting rods gather in the land of mopar where cranks ring and pistons push to boldly go where no engine gone before. Tune it up Scotty!!!!!
4:50 you got me! Why does the crank dictate a damper? Definite tech video please.
Internal vs external balance if I’m not mistaken
... I haven’t been a subscriber for very long here, but I am really liking this channel more and more with every video I watch....
Awww. ♥️
Grandkids are way more fun than a cat.
But sometimes they smell worse. 😉
Happy Birthday, Allison !! 🎂🥳🎉🎈🎁🎊🎂
Push rods were optional in the 70's
No that motor has Bluetooth. Lol
Like I sez, "$15 gets you a HF cordless drill to remove those bolts faster 3:35 . Buy two!" What a motor and what a granddaughter! Love the channel.
Nice to see y'all using a speed brace. I didn't think anyone in the youtubiverse knew what they were any more. :-)
We in the aircraft industry call it a "speeder or speed wrench". We rarely use anything but the 1/4 inch size. I think I even have a 1/2 inch speeder that hasnt seen daylight in 20 some years.
@@garybonz Speed Wrench or Speed Handle were what I was taught 20+ years ago.
I inherited a set of them from my late Grandfather. 60’s craftsman I believe
Was a wee bit of an art to use them one handed with a bit of a wobble on the handle. Was a bit of a luxury to have an air wrench in the 80's. :)
My introduction to them involved a John Deere combine
I thought I was the last man on earth still using a speed wrench...or as the children call it, my Fred Flintstone wrench...kudos for not buying batteries...
Just clicked on UA-cam to see if there was any new utg and you posted at that moment! Life is good.
Was just about to lay down and I see mystery and I automatically clicked. Stay blessed uncle tony
Looks like a nice score! Maybe consider having the block decked to make it a quench motor? Not sure that'd work without valve reliefs in the pistons though.
Funny you should bring that up. About to shave .010 - .015 off a 4.0L AMC 0630 head. Quench is something I am trying to research now.
Happy Birthday Uncle Allison!
If you are going thru all this work, check the out of the box eddys to make sure the guides are not too tight. Ask me how i know. Also, i would open up the pushrod holes in the heads a touch.
Dang good points man.
Looks at the bottom end and within 15 seconds spots a problem. That's a good eye and knowing what to look for
Awesome 👏
Big thank you uncle Tony. I wish you lived here in Naples, Florida.
Good fun video thanks guys
I had a 440 six pack just like that had the carbs recoated at a local shop . That’s a great looking motor and set ups. Had the 67 closed port heads which I ported . Miss that shit
Cool!
Looks great so far.
I'd watch this for a good long time as it takes me back to my days working as a machinist and doing some assembly work for a few current/former drag racers in engine shops!
nice score.
My first experience with a 440 was riding in my buddies Cuda in 73. It was also the quickest vehicle I had been in until some years later.
There were two Cudas at our high school. The other had a 427. I had a 62 Falcon.
Yeah it had about 8.5:1 compression with those .044 crush thickness gel pro head gaskets and the pistons setting that far down hole.
Hello Al and Tony !
This was great vid guys.
Nice pick up on that rod
Ut !
Man I miss seeing older cars on the road.
No kidding, I find myself trying to figure out where the last 20 years went.
Take your time nice to watch
Good video
No electric impacts, they are old school!
Hey Tony, not sure if you will see this, but check the intake port width at the pushrod pinch. I bought a set of E-Street heads and upon inspection, 2 ports on each head were only .900 wide while the other 2 were 1.000. Had to port them right out of the box just to even things up. Also, the chamber volume from one end to the other kept getting bigger and bigger with each cylinder. Mine are the 75cc variant. Also, there is a super sharp edge around the valves where they cut the seat which is horrible for flow. And the guide to valve clearance was too tight, had to get my machine shop to open them up a tad.
The boo-boo sticker was too cool. When my Daughter was around that age, I kept finding little pieces of toilet paper setting beside the bathroom sink. Maybe a dozen or so 1/2 inch squares in a pile. I'd throw them out and they would reappear the next day. Turns out she was putting them there in case I knicked myself shaving.
Life is all about the little people that work hard so we don't have to!
@@CarsandCats It's been 25 years, I saved some of them in an envelope, still have them. And, obviously, I remember.
Nice mill👍
The girl I took to my senior prom had a 69 Mustang Sportsroof with a 302 . She helped me get a job working at her brothers auto repair shop in 82. They decided to do a rotisserie restoration on the Mustang. No expense was spared . The engine was another story. They got a fully built 302 from these guys who were supposed to be the local Mustang guys / enthusiasts.
Once the car was ready she was driving it to Colorado to the Airforce Academy. In Kansas City it gave up the ghost . Took it to the local Ford dealer and found the crank broke in two places.
They bought a Ford Performance 302 and the dealer installed it. This is why I don't like taking anyone's word or just getting an engine from just anyone . These guys were supposed to be real good. Broken crank in two places good 😆
Great to see a speed brace being used!
YOU HAD ONE JOB KIWI!!! ONE JOBBB!!!
E Street!?...🤔 Like Bruce's band?..
Anyway fun stuff and disassembly with Uncle and Mopar Al..
So it was held down, not put together, no worries.. it will be done.. The Way of the GEARHEAD MONK SURVIVES!
Kathy, you’re getting all fancy with the b roll! 😍😍 it sure is a purty looking engine.
You’ve given the engine the proper blood sacrifice. 🤣❤️
check the guide clearance on the edelbrocks,, they are usually too tight.
Check to make sure piston and rod are not put in backwards. Easy to do on a flat top when assembling
Uncle Tony wish you had done this live
Unless I'm mistaken, those rockers look like they have an offset, but I'm not to sure if those E-street heads are intended to have them. Is that why there's no pushrods? Would even be possible for a pushrod to clear the holes in the heads?
That's an interesting question
3:40 baised on the way we tuned in to watch the paint dry on that hemi, probably a while
Yep, tear it down and check clearances based on what I've seen so far.
Oh a 440 With Bluetooth Rocker's, no pushrods needed 👍
Nice exam, Dr. Uncle Tony.
440 source 6qrt abody oil pan is a great pan without hanging too low.
That stock 1966-69 Hemi pan on that 440+6 engine has six quarts capacity. Not sure if it'll fit (i.e., clear) the A-body K-frame.
Looks great.... great find .... so details of what a good deal is for this?? Just curious.
And I agree putting in without looking inside would be crazy stupid lol
Uncle Tony I could sit and watch you turning bolts all day long. As long as you were talking the entire time.
You've given the appropriate blood sacrifice already, so it'll run wicked good!
CAR CULT LEADER UTG !!!
I was waiting for the lifters to fll out when they flipped it over
Tony is all thumbs today lol just teasing ! I've dropped retainers before. luckly you have a shop I have rock and dirt floor outside for nuts and bolts to go hiding 🙄😂
Harland Sharp roller rockers are orange if I remember right.
I did an OEM 440 build vissualy obvious bent rod, though NO diagonal pattern on piston Sunnen con rod straightness checker showed perfect bores parallel. Don't count it out
well spotted
Rockers appears to be Harland Sharp.
Looks like Harland Sharp rockers, though there are knock-offs.
Happy
Good UTG. Bent rod...
3:34 the art of editing! right here.
I understand there are other build videos butt at 3-ish or more hours long, I ain't sitting and watching! if I gotta watches, I'll do a documentary like "JFK to 911 Everything Is A Rich Man's Trick" @ 3 hours an 28 Minutes! ugh. Or LoTR's! two blu-ray discs per movie... reminds me of laserdiscs! yay.
PowerNation went and re-edited some of their episodes into a video focusing on a single build start to finish. how neat! ... yea, those videos maybe I donno, archival bleary eye'd upload streamed and stuff. but maybe do an edited version for those who "Ain't Gots no Time for THAT!" people like me... heh, whatevah,
No one is forcing you to "sitting and watching."
@@electrix6751 that's the thing, Im never siting and watching UTG if it's longer than an hour!
Did the same finger tight guy who put together Andy's hemi when he bought it build that 440? lol
Hey Tony, There's no shame in using a little screw gun or battery ratchet and some swivels....... I Love ur show!!! Semper Fi
If there's a bent rod and a new crank, there's also most likely cracks in the block. Better check for those before sinking any more money into it.
The motor has never been ran..
@@TheTazzman1968 Never after the rebuild, but never before the rebuild..? Usually these shiny turds are left at the corner of the shop when something drastic as cracked mains are discovered. Then they get the "polishing" treatment, filled with shiny bits and sold forward as "runners".
A simultaneous "oooh" as the valve covers come off . . . But very strange. Some stuff sealed and tight, some not very strange. Yes, a very good idea to take it apart and see what ya got. Trust, but verify.
WHAT! WHAT!?? A DOWEL!!!!!!!
Tony got superman fingers.
The holy goat!
definitley look like Harlan Sharp rockers!
Al I just subscribed to your channel
What a great Grandpa.
ya looks pretty legit
Don't you just love the grand babies,
I have 4 of em
That's my kind of un boxing video.
DAM TONY YOU HAVE A GREAT EYE SPOTING THAT CONECTING ROD ,LOOKS BENT ON MY TV.
Coming to Murfreesboro 25-26th of March. Mind if i stop by and say hello?
lol that Rod is not bent, it's Pressed fit to the Wrist Pin, it was like that so that the big end of the rod doesn't bind up against the rod next to it. If it was bent the piston would have been cocked sideways in the bore and creating a lot of drag. .Not sure how an engine that's never even ran yet can have a "Bent Rod"
i'm sure thats a used rod. so its been there done that in something else before. if its the only one with an offset that would signal investigation is warranted. could be many different things. the phrase "bent rod" is pretty generic.
No pistons down below the deck, toss em and get another set. Measure your deck clearance with those pistons and measure the compression distance.
We're working, we're working. YA, YA, YA, anyone can take stuff APART !
Im about ready to do the same thing on a 360. It was rebuilt by an actual shop to go in a 69 Charger, but the owner opted for a big block, so I bought the 360 and have no idea whats in it, and i need to make sure to re-lube it because its sat for 5 years.
Yeah those gaskets might be about ready to go after sitting that long
@@tl5108 let alone the prelube. I have no idea what cam or pistons or if stock.
Man....get a 1/4" impact! All that crankin is nonsense lol 👌👌🙏🙏
Looks like Harland Sharp rockers
Get a set of 4340 forged rods . those are 1054 low sulfur , good but not the best .
That was exciting and it wasn't my stuff.
Ooo! Ooo! I know! pick me! It's the same thing I found in every engine I took apart:
_a pain in the ass_
Those are Harland Sharp rockers
I have yet to come across of these aluminum heads that haven’t needed the valves lapped in out of the box. Literally seen s bunch of new castings new in box with leaking valves doing a solvent soak.
"I think it's ready to run"...... had he tried, the salt would have flowed!
You guys need to buy some rechargeable ratchets ands impacts!
That's a 1966-69 426 Hemi oil pan on that engine. I'm surprised Uncle Tony didn't notice that.
