    Another trip down memory lane. I was stationed at Barber's Point and most of the squadron either lived on the West Shore, Makakilo (single wall construction in the first part) or Ewa Beach. You're right about Long's; their $2 flip flops were a staple but I splurged for Reym Spooner Alohas. The town is unrecognizable although Campbell High was there and that old McDonald's was the slowest one on the Island. If you wanted a mall, Pearlridge was the closest. I'm assuming that those new developments are at the site of the Navy Housing In Iroquois Point. I used to sail my Hobie Cat from there to Waikiki. There was this old landlord, Mr Endo who had a large 1940's beachfront house that was constantly rented by Sailors and was the scene of many parties. You could see Diamond Head from the back yard. Thanks again for posting; now you have me thinking...

    Just watched, I’m from Waipahu but moved to Mainland land in 1976. I still visited 2-3x a year until my Mom passed. She lived in the Ewa Plantation homes. It brings back so many memories. Had family that lived in Gentry too. I also enjoy hearing your childhood stories. TY so much. I now live in Arizona. Every time I come back I get stressed from the traffic. But I love the food so much, I try to hit all the best local spots.

    You have given such a great tour of the lay of the land in Ewa. I am moving back as soon as a senior rental unit opens up for me. I hope there will be block grant monies or other redevelopment for the plantation house areas including added ohana tiny homes. It is great to hear Campbell HS upped their scores. I volunteered for the library system there. I had great hopes for the students I got to meet there when most did not have computers of any kind in their homes. Bravo for bringing the everyday environment of life in Hawaii. I encourage you to move to Ewa or Kapolei. It is really only 45 minutes from so many places in those now more rare hours the traffic doubles or triples road time I know. 7-11 was bought by a Japanese company who I understand have much expanded their to-go premade Hawaiian and Asian style foods beyond the necessary daily fuel of misubi. Ewa and Kapolei are the aloha integration of old and new. I tried to create a corporate school adoption program just to get AC and solar for all the schools. I frankly think that is the least the out of state developers and retailers owe to the schools.

    Grew up in the area back in the '80s from 1980-to 1992. Lived on what was military housing Paula and Iroquois point. Went to Iroquois Point elementary school, ʻIlima Intermediate School, and Campbell High School Freshman and sophomore years. My brother and I went back in 2021 after 29 years, and boy Ewa/Ewa Beach has changed big time. When I first moved there all we had as a few small local shops, a Mcdonald's, an eat-in Pizza Hut, Woolworths, and Food Land. By the time we moved it grew a little. Had a Taco Bell, a brand new McDonalds, where I had my first job and a subway. But that was it, everything else was sugar cane.

    • @movingtohawaii
      @movingtohawaii  2 роки тому +1

      Yessir Shane. On the mid 90’s gentry started developing and in the 2000’s it went crazy. Sugar cane is a low yield crop given the amount of water and land required so it was phased out over time and that land used for Hawaii’s housing shortage.

      As for new stores and restaurants coming to Hawaii, not really sure. Just keep your ears and eyes open and I’m sure you’ll hear something. That’s usually how it works here, people like to talk and share news, and we live on an island so word spreads fast.

    Hi! Here is military family will be moving to Oahu, Mililani vs. West loch/Waipahu, which area is better to buy single home? We would like to rent it out after we leave. Work place will be Hickam, so please let me know anything about commute, town, school, easier to rent out to military, weather, etc., Thank you in advance!

    • @movingtohawaii
      @movingtohawaii  3 роки тому

      Aloha! And thanks for reaching out with these great questions. We absolutely love assisting families moving to Oahu. The commute from Mililani to Hickam is similar to the commute from West Loch to Hickam when we consider commute time - around 18-30mins depending on traffic. That time is an estimate for morning traffic around 6:00AM. Traffic after work (or as we say here 'pau hana traffic') however, could be very different. As our state is beginning to get back to "normal" so are traffic patterns. Typically, late afternoon road conditions on the H1 West on weekdays are bad. (Pro-Tip: Make sure to use the restroom before getting in your car, and have an audio book or playlist ready to go). From Hickam to the H1/H2 offramp - it doesn't matter if you're living in Mililani or West Loch, because you're on the same route. The difference is after the H1/H2 offramp. If you're going home to Mililani, you'll take the H2 offramp which may lead to faster moving traffic than the H1 West traffic. If you're going home to West Loch, you'll stay on the H1 West, which is known to be slow moving during late afternoon weekday hours. Not only that, once you do finally make it past Waikele and take the Ewa Exit - Fort Weaver road can be backed up as well, adding to your overall commute time. I know this only addresses one of your many inquiries. Truthfully, we can talk about this all day long! But, we respect your time and just want to let you know that we'd be more than happy to jump on a call at your earliest convenience. Please contact us anytime! Phone number is listed in the video description. Or feel free to continue our conversation via email: derek@derekokahashi.com
