A 20-minute spot for Carl Sagan. Can't think of another guest getting so much time (and respect). Carson was fully prepared & invested in this interview.
I agree, Helen's recordings were great but she sounded even better live, even when she made a return to singing live in the early 2010's after a 10-year absence. Quite an amazing performer and I was glad to have seen her live several times.
I really like her when she played a singing guitar-playing nun in the film "Airport 1975", debuting in American theaters less than a year after this episode first aired. Linda Blair, who was starring as a satan-possessed child in the original "Exorcist" @ that time, also played a kidney transplant patient in "Airport 1975".
Dog training is really Owner of the dog training. I took my dog to obedience training and discovered it was all about learning how to deal with the dog. Stand, sit, down, down and stay, heal... after about a month our dog followed all the commands, it was amazing. I could tell him Down/Stay outside a store and he would be right there when I came out.
I wondered if that was Bellson, I've seen him sitting in with the band on other vids from this era, I wonder why he was on the show so often back then.
Well here you see it: the HEAVY FASHION look which started around late 1969 and was definately in vogue by 1971:wide ties, scarves with the little gold ring, wider lapels, belted backs on suits/sportcoats, longer wide shirt collars (so the tie can fit in), sideburns, longer hair: thanks to the COWSILLS number one song hit HAIR from the BROADWAY HIT MUSICAL "HAIR" in 1969 and the title song reaching #1 MAY of 1969!! along with AQUARIOUS Let the Sunshine In, Love Can Make You Happy, Good Morning Starshine, Time of the Season, Oh Happy Day, Crystal Blue Persuasion, as 1969 progressed and we were just about into the SPIRITUAL GOSPEL ROCK ERA!!
Interesting episode--the dog trainer got two segments, Rich Little only got one segment (thankfully from my pov as I find Little hard to watch as he's just all too pleased with his own abilities), Helen Reddy got only one segment--she didn't even sing another song after her interview, and Carl Sagan got THREE segments. It was a fascinating convo, but it was the last, so Johnny made sure to save Carl enough time for 3 segments, that was his plan. Now, normally, a scientist would get one short segment at the end, while a star like Little would get at least 2 segments. The pecking order among performers is a huge deal, and I wonder if Little or his agent had something to say about the scientist getting 3 segments, the dog trainer 2, and Rich only getting one.
And an OPEC oil embargo instead of an embargo from what was then the USSR. At least Johnny and his guests gave most of us an hour to try to leave our worries behind, something that today's successors can't quite accomplish.
I , being a kid. , thought I am woman was who Helen Reddy was . No , Here she shares how she was a professional at 4 years. A great singer in so many ways . My jealousy of I am woman is of ignorant bad taste perhaps only outdone by those of the movement who sing poorly the song for political reasons and forget the woman seen here, a true Star in Burbank or Perth Australia.
I,m surprised MISS REDDY did not sing her big #1 song: RUBY RED DRESS which reached #1 just about DECEMBER 23,1973! The other BIG SONG HITS for November 1973 tru January 1974 were: Time in a Bottle (jim croce) Most Beautiful Girl (charlie rich) Photograph (ringo starr) Hello It,s Me (todd rundgen) Top of the World (carpenters) Just You and Me (chicago) Helen Wheels (wings) Paper Roses (marie osmond) I Got a Name (jim croce) All this if anyone out there is interested! Miss REDDY has recently passes away (around the fall of 2020) And hard to believe a while back when they were turning out thier song hits we lost: John Denver, Jim Croce, Harry Chapin, Teddy Pendergras (from Harold Melvin and Blue Notes) You,ll find all thier songs by simply typing into your KEYBOARD (typewriter I call it) on your cell phone or computer thier names and song titles!!
rich little ... boo. clearly he has some talent but there's something about his own personality and ego that gets involved and just doesn't seem light and joyous and fun when he delivers it so I can't root for him. I'd rather slightly weaker impersonations with a more whimsical personality in between because he takes themselves so seriously and clearly thanks a lot of himself. I could be totally wrong, I'm just a dude on the internet giving my opinion.
Thank you for posting this!🙏✌️
27:40 Louie Belleson on drums! Epic! I love these bumpers. Doc and the NBC Orchestra ROCKED! Thanks for sharing.

Johnny's hobby was astronomy
This is my favorite opening shot ~ the desk & furniture in dimmed lights.
Carl Sagan , very interesting. need more of his talks.
I remember this show. Helen Reddy sounded so amazing live.

I am going back in time and I’m really enjoying it. Thanks for these videos ❤️
Man, these are great. Thank you. I love getting to hear the band play during the breaks.
Johnny is the best!

Matthew Margolis (The Ultimate Guide to Dog Training), Rich Little, singer Helen Reddy, and astronomer Carl Sagan.
Always a pleasure to see a post from you, pannoni.
Thanx so much for sharing.

Also learned a dog trained to attack or defend its owner is less likely to bite anyone without the command.
There are no dumb dogs , just human owners!!!
That is so true. You don't really train the dog, you train the dog owner how to deal with the dog.
Drum solo! 27:00
Never got to hear the full songs back in the day,. Thanks
Filling in on drums, Louie Bellson!
Whoa!
I wondered if that was Bellson, I've seen him sitting in with the band on other vids from this era, I wonder why he was on the show so often back then.
Rich Little, great imitation of Nixon and Humphrey!

What a break from WW3 LOL 😁 just realized I was transported back to the Vietnam war😂 and Watergate. Will we ever learn.

Great 😃👍 Fashion Nova Look from 1973.
56:11 The 'grand tour', which became the Voyager Program.
Carl Sagan on the lack of funding for space exploration.. & aliens. Louie Bellson on drums.👍🏻
Great show. Really enjoy the extended band segments.
Is this an aircheck or off the monitor?

She sings a verse a medley that includes Ruby @ 41:17.

That cat's too busy typing to notice.
It's called Leave Me Alone and she sings it at 40:44
I wonder why he would say we'll be back twice. seems awkward.
