Step inside Chris Lord-Alge’s impressive studio ‘Mix L.A.’ to observe the legendary mix engineer at work! In this five-part instalment, CLA remixes the multiple award-winning rock anthem ‘Welcome to the Black Parade’ by My Chemical Romance. Despite his ability to achieve top-class results working ‘in the box’, Chris tackles this ambitious project in his favourite way - all analog! Making the most of his SSL 4000 console and enviable collection of gear, the Grammy winner demonstrates his workflow using only hardware processing. Throughout the course of this series, you’ll get an up-close view of CLA’s movements at the console, outboard units, and Pro Tools, which is used primarily for playback and print. Chris reveals his choice of equipment and settings to enhance the raw signals of voice, drums, bass, guitars, horns, organ, piano, and more. Enjoy a detailed look at how this true master takes the record from A to Z, conveying the efficient and impulsive approach he is so highly respected for!
This guy and his brother were my heroes 80’s & 90’s
One of the best snare mixes
He mixed it in 2:12 minutes, including the presentation
This is just a preview though, right?

I'm never sure how forgiving to be with room ambience, that one clip cleared up a lot for me. CLA knows exactly what he wants to hear from start to finish

This looks so fun
I love this song so muchhh
YES FINALLY. Been waiting for CLA to talk more about The Black Parade
Lord-Alge is such a cool name
This álbum is so gooooooood !!!!
Yes!
It’s not very wet. But there are four reverbs on the drums 🧐
Dosage is key
4 sends isnt much
@@nexusobserve last month I had a pop ballad and used 10 sends for just the vocal. All automated etc. Verbs, delays, saturation, whisper, widener, etc. If used right the vocal becomes a wall of hugeness.

As long as the drummer was wearing wellington boots it's all fine
CLA is a Legend!
The legend himself
1:30 the sony diarrhea🥰
😍😍
Why does the CLA Vocals plug in have so much noise, even when the track isn't playing???
It was a weird decision by Waves
I just wonder: could someone have done this same exact remix in the box in a home project studio? It would be fascinating to find out and compare their mix with Chris's! Bc who has access to this kind of equipment? And do we even need all that equipment anymore? I just wonder
His brother Tom does all the classes in the box, which is basically a recreation of the original mix that was analog. Eric Valentine also does his demo mixes in the box for teaching purposes. The principles are the same. The companies that make the analog gear sell digital versions of it anyways
'Small console'
Cla❤❤❤
2A ❤ 3A
One thing I notice in the album mix… where the hell are the cymbals?
got lowered by the volume lol
Love the song, actually love the mix, but this is the one track I point my friends to when they ask "what's the worst mastered song you've ever heard?" This singular track is the absolute pinnacle of early 2000's over-compression. Smash it to death, then nuke it with a nasty limiter 15 or 20 times, then run it through another limiter just to be sure. - Put the original CD master through any meter on any sound board and you'll realize what genius is really in the mix because the meter will NOT MOVE for pretty much the whole song. I'd love to hear what it could've been if it was remastered to actually sound good instead of be loud.
That's the mastering engineer to blame not him.
With joining MTM do i also got the multitracks?
No. But the CLA session with Phil X do offer it for download (at least it did a while ago).
Join MWTM. You'll love it. Incredible content. I did a year membership and watched just about every video on the platform. Didn't re-up because I'd seen everything. But, will join again as soon as enough new content is added. But, I gotta say it is the most amazing site ever for production content.
WHEN I WAS. A YOUNG BOY
Rick Astley on a one second room? 😂
Bricasti
Put the mix and all the tracks through a compressor and feed that compressor into another compressor et voila!
I just want to know about the guitars. Hope that is covered extensively.. but im guessing he didnt track it all those years ago ?
There are a couple CLA guitars video on UA-cam if you search for them.
He didn't track them. They were just sent to him by the band's producer, Rob Cavallo
@@EthanRom yeah as I guessed
@@rhettsycoplando4064 *than. And he's not producing it - he's mixing an already produced song.
Dear lord 2006 flashback
How much money did this whole record make? anyone know?
It made 3 platinums in the US and UK idk how much they made though
Mix with the masters never do a full free master class on UA-cam, so sad 😟
Because they actually use good music from albums that sold and people wanna hear. And real producers not bedroom laptop producers
@@pierre-claudemeriot6562 your comment is so random on so many levels
'"Small" console' lol
It is a small console by ssl standards. He only has 52 input 48 output. The SSL 9000 at electric lady for example is around 96 channels which is the biggest ever from SSL. His 4000 was originally around 64 input but was cut down from what I heard he has the 4068 from around 1985

At least there's (finally) no pretense of trying to be enthusiastic about plugins....
TLA mixes almost exclusively in the box, but sure lol
@@BrofUJu What does TLA have to do with this?....
@@ytnsanw tons of top mixers use just plugins. Idea that you can't be enthusiastic about plugins is just silly old school thinking
@@BrofUJu I'm not referring to myself - I'm referring to CLA, who for years has been hawking and endorsing plugins that he doesn't actually use, as he is the most out-of-the-box mix engineer out there...
@@ytnsanw to be fair tho I love the Waves CLA Compressor and almost everyone in the industry uses the plug in
Maybe mix in a new colour t shirt 😂
YEah but... almost no one uses analog gear anymore. Dinasour tech.
Just because it's in analog doesn't mean it can't be replicated on digital. It's all about the mixing philosophy, not the gear
Yeah but.
analog gear will still have the price when you sold 10-20 years later.
But whos gonna buy a 20 years old plugins or a 20 years old computer lol
pretty stupid comment. use what the track needs, whats best for the track, no matter if its analog oder box. btw half of all plugins try too simulate analog sound.
Ok noob
@@firmans12 Insanely ignorant comment. There was a time in the 90s where original 1176s were selling for less than $500.
Great to see him do his thing but after watching the full video. He doesn’t give any insight. He doesn’t explain why he does anything or give any A/B comparisons.
He is so efficient that he flies through what you want to hear in seconds and you don’t learn anything.
Also if he does a very rare comparison (say parallel compression) he talks over the comparison so you can’t hear it as his voice ducks the audio volume.
The Andy Wallace videos are the best so far IMO. He explains and shows you why he’s doing his thing……
His classes are not for beginners so a lot of it will really fly over your head if you're just starting out
