- After covering 120 miles in my 2CV after an engine overhaul, I carry out valve clearance checks and silence an exhaust blow. I also sort out some wiring, which has been annoying me for 18 months now...
I also use a new microphone. Turns out it's rubbish and suffers from very bad interference from pretty much everything! Sorry. The new mobile mount for my tripod is thankfully more successful.

Similar here - entertainment and makes me feel better after a long day fighting the Acadiane. I am sure at 4:50 -5:00 the nut drops down into the engine! Nice torque wrench though...and handy tip on the spanner to exaggerate movement. Cheers

It is so refreshing to see someone use a torque wrench correctly on UA-cam. One of my pet hates (and I’ve been known to throw things at apprentices and heavier things at qualified people who are guilty of it) is people who tighten to the click then give it a bit more for luck! You see it all over UA-cam. Why even bother using a torque wrench if you’re just going to make up your own torque level anyway? Well done for trusting the precision instrument to do its job. 👍
And yes I know some manufacturers require a set torque followed by an angle but that’s not what I’m jibbering on about here.😃

You could get the valve clearances set right on a Simca but would still sound like a box of screws. Another way of checking for leaks on the exhaust is soapy water.

Handy tip with the spanner for showing movement of the rockers. I'll remember that one.
Here's one I do use, since I've got one of those lovely hex-ended screwdrivers too: put a spanner on the end of it when you tighten the locknut. Makes it far easier to stop the adjustment screw readjusting itself.
Don't let all that speed go to your head. TWC might get jealous.

Top tip. Use copper grease instead of exhaust putty. That way any flex in the exhaust will not cause cracked paste and copper grease will keep the joint sealed
Thanks. That's what I try to do. I also use a thin smear on the cylinder head before fitting to the barrel.

I’ve kind of grown fond of the old 2CV now, I used to dislike them years ago due to them leaning so much but I’ve altered my way of thinking now - Thank you.

That very annoying noise in the mic is your cell phone talking to the tower - putting it in airplane mode should do the trick. Or getting a mic that's shielded against radio frequency interference.

Unless the 2CV is different to all other engines, you shouldn't loosen the head bolts/nuts when you retorque them. Just check/tighten to the final figure (17ft.lbs). As you have loosened them, you now need to do it again in another 200 miles or so.
Maybe it's just a personal thing, but I like to just free them a little to ensure they can tighten up a bit. They'll get checked next time I give the car a service anyway.
@@HubNut Fair enough if that's what you want to do, but it is defeating the object of the exercise. You initially torque the bolts/nuts to the specified figure, but then they may loosen slightly as things are heated in use and generally settle down. If you are unlucky, this can cause leaking head gaskets so the idea is to let them bed in for a few miles and then pull them down again to the specified torque. By loosening first you are restarting the whole process over.

Pretty much what I thought, I would not have loosened before re-torquing.
Part of my daily routine is working on pre 1980 Mercedes and all the head bolts are always backed off individually when retorqueing the heads and that includes the sidevalve engines which have nuts. The head bolt is designed to stretch a certain amount to allow for heat expansion. So when you back off the bolt ,you are releasing the tension in the length. When it is tightened ,the bolt fist goes to it's new stretch length then the wedging action of the thread increases it according to the amount of toque applied. On the Merc engines, if you simply re tighten , you run the risk of overstretching the bolts, possibly breaking them. Plus the friction between the nut ,bolt head and washer can give a false reading resulting in a loose bolt.

Enjoyed the video and like the fact you didn't have to switch off the camera as often to do some work with both hands, tripod's a great thing, I had a chuckle as your 11mm spanner made a break for it when you hammered that extension bar on the exhaust clamp.

In my youth and blessed with many "Good Ideas" or so it seemed, I once decided to adjust the Tappets on my 1968 Viva HB whilst the engine was ticking over. NOT a good idea. oil splashed everywhere!! I still ended up with one or two still rattling. Tappets were always the Bain of my early motoring life. Thank heavens hydraulic ones came along... :-)
Good video, takes me back to my old 1983 Nova ohv I had back in the 90s doing valve clearances, not heard mobile phone interference in years I noticed it periodically over half way through video lol 🙈
The amount of work to do a simple valve adjustment makes me think that the design team for the 2CV also designed the Char B tank.

I used to be quite the fan of Draper esp when they were still made in Southampton, never had a socket fail or spanner lose its mojo over many long moons working at scrappies. Of course my coveted items I have are King Dick and Britool esp back when I used to work on steam engines and Draper did do the bigger sizes but not in the "slogger" spanners which both KD and Britool did (its a ring spanner or open end spanner with a great big bashing bit on the other end designed to be whacked with a sledge).
My wife once dealt with Draper directly over something she wanted to purchase - they were incredibly helpful.
Seems like Hubnut is really trying(and succeeding) on getting his tools and video camera up to a high level of standards. Not so much for the little mouse microphone! Hehe. Nonetheless a great tutorial on how to adjust the valves on a 2CV. I really like the wrench trick tip on how to tell when the valves are fully open or closed. I hope the Rover makes an appearance soon after Hubnut finds the keys. I miss the British style and motoring. Smiles.

Oooo! you cant beat new tools, very good purchase. I love those 'jelly mold' rocker covers on the 2CV's.
Draper tools are ok, I have some, also Wurth tools are quite good, snap on are Rolls Royce priced and supposed to be guaranteed for life. But really Britool are as good as snap on , but a bit cheaper. Mrs Hubnut must be one understanding woman, hope she is nursing your cold, and keeping you warm. Like the beany.

One of my Peugeot 309's has the Talbot/Simca engine...I gave up adjusting the valve clearances a long time ago as its pointless...He starts, runs and drives like a dream...But sounds like someone shaking a milk crate full of empty bottles...I have now adopted the motto 'A tappy engine is a happy engine' Ellie is sounding much nicer now...Well done!

Thanks Ian for this video, although 3years old I just used it to do my own valve clearances. I decided to go for 0.25 on all valves, given E10 fuel. Hopefully that's correct!
Now to do my Visa. . .
0.25 on the inlet is probably a little on the large side, but a tappy tappet is a happy tappet so they say.

You might like to know my cat became fascinated by this 2CV tappet-setting video, and for a time sat right in front of the telly looking up at it. It may have been the orange gloves - perhaps she thought your hands were some kind of animal or bird - or maybe she has an unexplored interest in air-cooled car maintenance. Either way, it is unfortunate I can't post a photo of her looking at your rocker arms on UA-cam!

Yes the microphone needs recycling, then the interference from the mobile phone mid video, but it gives that authentic hubnut video style, please tidy your tools up now you have got some nice new ones.

Nothing's ever a quick job. The most simple mechanical task devolves into a day's worth of "while i'm at it, I may as well fix this"
Took me 20 minutes to change a headlamp bulb, but then you needed an armer plated had the six of a 3 year old to get at it. 😠
Top tip for the religiously untidy, is that if you buy enough tools, there should be the right one to hand, no matter where you are in the garage.

magnetic trays are a blessing for all those bolts & nuts so they dont fall from air filter! Hmmm...maybe you could use a cheap and useful Christmas present all the way from US?

I do own one, but it's full of random bolts and screws, because HubNut. Might need a tidy up...
@@HubNut To be honest, I'm no better. A bench full of random B.A. nuts and screws, clamps and goodness knows what else. But many are brass nuts so a magnetic tray is no use!

Years ago when I was restoring BMW's ,I found that you lost appreciable horsepower when the tappets were too lose. It actually affects quite markedly ,the cam timing,cam lift and different points etc. So you should get pretty good CV's when the engine is run in and the tappets set finally. Just be careful of the clutch and gear box now, that .5 CV you just added might be a bit much.
Stock gearboxes can, just about, handle a 100bhp BMW conversion. I don't think my extra 20% (if that) is going to trouble it.

The clicking is coming from a mobile phone somwhere near or attached to the mic, bet it has no sheilding to prevent this. Used to do a demonstration on mobile phone interference in regards to radio equipment, microphones, and amplified speaker systems at radio club meetings. Otherwide the mic sounds good if a bit on the low end for use with voice.
Indeed. The mobile records the videos. Other external mics don't have this issue.
Ahh, that would be why then. I'd suspect the mic cable has no shielding allowing it to act as an antenna well suited to picking up the polling pulses from the mobile's transceiver. Cheers!
Push rods like the CG125 motorbike engine. That's the reason for the choke, they expand as the engine heats up. The mixture is too lean until they do.
Not sure how pushrod tubes relate to the fuel mixture being burned in the engine. Entirely unrelated on a 2CV at least.
@@HubNut Tell you my logic, not saying it's right. I had a CG125 which took forever to warm up and needed a lot of choke until it did. I was directed to check the valve clearances which I did and having made sure several times they were OK I came to the conclusion the only variable left was the rocker arm and the push rods. So my conclusion was heat was causing them to expand, opening the valve by a tad, and thus allowing the choke to be pushed back in.
Also, as far as I know, the newer 125 engine were chain driven and not push rod, and they had electronic ignition in place of a choke.
Manning the tappets. Uh oh, more tools to lose. I'd suggest magnetic pads on the floor, then they can'ardly roll away. Or...paint'em up like mice and the cat'll bring'em back to ya. On the new jugs, can you just ratio up the added CCs to prognosticate the new HP & Torquemando?

Something very pleasing about being able to keep an old car going that is so mechanically simple (relatively). Designed for French peasants living in the middle of nowhere with a barn and a set of tools and a bit of mechanical nous. Still performing the same function, decades on, apparently. Seems that everything is replacable and you can buy all the bits... I even saw a a whole new body shell on ebay recently! An indestructable car? Are 2CVs still ending up in scrapyards? If so, why?

The noise on the sound isn’t the microphone. The sound is mobile phone RF interference being picked up by the mic.

@@HubNut well you can tell.. 1) smell of a bit burning, 2) on a almost brand new battery, sucking everything just to turn it over a tiny bit, etc... i actually paid mechanic to do it, cuse painie, and two didnt know how hard it was to do on a front wheel drive.. on good old fashioned rwd, it would be sitting nice and easy to get..

When (if) you eventually get around to tidying up your garage I'd suggest getting some mobile shelving for your tools so that you can manage the space in the garage a bit better, plus benefit from having your tools close to the work. The roll cages that are used for supermarket deliveries etc. are a good solution for this, and a damn site cheaper than any tool chests are. This place in Manchester can supply used ones from £40 + VAT. www.recohandling.com/Used-Roll-Cages-Containers.html. The delivery might cost more than the cage but as your work requires you to drive all over the place you might as well take a van for a test drive to Manchester. Cut up your existing shelves to fit in the cages and you might manage to maintain a tidy garage. Alternatively you could just adopt a saying of mine; 'It is only a mess to the untrained eye!'.
Halfords have there massive kits on offer for £130 at the minute.

Your microphone is fine, your mobile phone is being picked up by the camera,the phone transmits to the nearest mast regularly to report its position back.

I'd like to see a future video of a road test (with some off-road bits) of the fabulously cool looking brand new Suzuki Jimny. That would be a cheap but very useful bit of kit up here in the far, far north.

The microphone noise is breakthrough signal from your mobile phone. By one with shielded connections - the microphone that is :-) . Edit - didn't know you were of the Jeremy Clarkson motor engineering persuasion ?
i believe they have wireless landline phones in the house. But again, yes, shielding.

It's not really that much bother. I'd rather have this occasional torment than a sodding cambelt.
