Our first family cruise was at Christmas time on the Sovereign in 1995, and we loved it. We've been on many Royal ships since and had forgotten the cool things that ship had like a two-story buffet and twin cinemas. We also loved the Viking crown Lounge and will never forgive Royal Caribbean for chopping them up to make room for a suite lounge and the Diamond Lounge. Thanks for the memories.
I agree...the two cinemas just blew me away with first run movies being played and that buffet was just beautiful. Seemed like plenty of room to find a seat unlike these days. When I first went on the Song of America in 1983 the Viking Crown Lounge blew me away!!! Thanks for watching!
Your first cruise is always the best and nothing else will compare....same with me when I took my first cruise on Royal Caribbean's Song of America. It was just amazing. I remember keeping up with the building progress of the Sovereign of the Seas and could not believe the ship when I boarded her. Thanks for watching!!
She was a marvelous ship, we sailed on her when she started doing three -four day cruises. Then we sailed on her sisters MAJESTY and MONARCH. Never came away disappointed. It was nice seeing the NORWAY in your video. We sailed on her three times. A real classic. She as well as the ships mentioned in my comment were all built at the Saint Naziare shipyard.
My second time on her was also when she started doing the 3-4 day cruises....it was also a great experience. I also did the Monarch and hopefully have enough film to do a video on that one. Thanks for watching!
When I started cruising in 1983, Miami was really the only terminal and it was cruise ship row. I believe Ft. Lauderdale opened up for the cruise ships back in 2009 and became massive with Royal Caribbean bringing in the Oasis and their other massive ships. What a change in such a short period of time. Thanks for watching and commenting.
My first cruise was this ship. Way before all these huge, lumbering monster ships, overloaded with thousands of passengers. Those were better days for taking a cruise.
I could not agree more. I had been on other Royal Caribbean ships and could not wait for this one to be built. It was so state of the art back then and we were blown away. I want nothing to do with those new massive beasts! I will stay with the smaller ships for sure. Thanks for watching.
This post brought back memories! I was living in San Juan those days and remember making a trip to the Port to see the Sovereign coming in on its first visit to Puerto Rico. Quite impressive.
I could not believe it when I first saw her. Massive! I had sailed on the Norway prior to this ship coming into service and thought that one was big....what a difference. Thanks for watching.
When I stepped on that ship I was so blown away....had never seen anything like it. It just got better and better until the mega ships came out...no thank you, that is not cruising anymore. Thanks for watching the video!!
I am glad you liked it. Fun times back then. I have some other vintage videos on the channel if your interested and plan on adding a few more when I catch up with the current ones I am working on. Thanks for watching and commenting!!
ha ha...back then most people could not afford to take kids on a cruise. I have to say the cruise lines have kept prices low which allows more families to go. Now that I am an old man, the trick is finding a ship that does not have a bunch of kids! ha ha Thanks for watching!
@ that’s so interesting. Yes as a 31 year old I just came off a Royal Carribean ship full of kids. This video is so interesting to compare to what I just experienced, thanks for posting!!

@@patsadventures6381 I hope you'll put the video of the MONARCH up, I would love to see it. You're very welcome, it was a pleasure to watch it.
It is interesting to see these old videos and look at Miami and Ft. Lauderdale before they grew so large!

beautiful pioneering ship of its time. one sister left laid up in greece awaiting an uncertain future.
When I stepped on that ship I was so blown away....had never seen anything like it. It just got better and better until the mega ships came out...no thank you, that is not cruising anymore. Thanks for watching the video!!
great video, lovely to see an older ship and how cruising used to be.

What a perspective! Thanks for sharing your memories with us.
Glad you enjoyed it. Fun to look back at these old ones. I still cannot believe how small the rooms were! Thanks for watching.
Have you ever been on a Carnival Fantasy class ship before the Evolutions of Fun makeovers in the late 2000s?
Nope...the last Carnival cruise I took was in 2002 and have not looked back. Thanks for watching.
@@patsadventures6381 No problem.
Where are all the kids?!

Inside cabins very very small
Oh yes, even the outside cabins were very small....things have changed now. But back in the day, this ship was awesome. Thanks for watching!
