Is Saving Private Ryan the greatest WW2 movie of all time?
Greatest? Nah. Depends a bit on how you define WW2 movie, but I don't think it's really in the top 5. Sure, it has an iconic landing on D-Day but after that I'm not sure it really stands out among the crowd that much.
As a side note, if I had to pick my personal top 10 favorite WW2 movies, the 1959 Soviet film Ballad of a Soldier would definitely be on that list. It's kind of interesting to see the war from an idealized Soviet perspective.
Honestly, I didn't like that movie. I don't care for stories that bend over backwards to justify a specific ending and then still fail to justify it.
(for anyone wondering what I'm talking about, there's no way the prisoner could've ended up getting ahead of the group)
No. "Come And See" is. Saving Private Ryan's opening scene is STUNNINGLY awesome - but after that it's nothing special. "Come And See" is definitely the best WW2 film - heck, as a combat vet, it's the best WAR film ever made. Other films better than SPR: the 1967 Polish film "Westerplatte" & 1957 masterpiece "Kanal"; the Russian films "Fortress Of War" and "Battle For Sevastopol"; "Letters From Iwo Jima"... I would even hazard the Chinese film "Death & Glory In Changde" is better
@MrTerry Got a suggestion, teach. Fear the Boom and Bust: Keynes and Hayek by Emergent Order. It's an economics rap.
2:38 "Colonel Yankedhisarmoff" 🤣
He actually made that sound like a normal Russian name I almost missed it.
Like Rowan Atkinson's russian exchange student Suckmeoff
It took me.a watch or two catch that.
@@charliedontsurf334 It was smooth by them haha.
The real scenario would be that the Soviets wouldve left Ryan dead and not waste their resources to find him. Even if he did survive to see the Russian offensive, he would be first questioned whether or not he is not a turncoat to the Nazis.
they would have gave him the Witold Pilecki treatment at a minimum
Stalin refused to negotiate the release of his own captured son and let the nazis kill him. You can guess what would happen to Ryan.
That said, this was slanderous, the ex-USSR had some decent WW2 movies and series.
@@Imman1s Count the number of countries that were part of the USSR, and you'd have a decent chance of at least one of them making a decent film. Also how is it slander?
Actually later in the war he proabbly would have been hunted down by smersh.
This Squire person started off with video game content and related skits, and apparently moved to more general historical stuff as his production values got better.
I'd definitely recommend reacting to some of Squires more popular tank related videos, they are a lot of fun
Squire is great my most favorite is the ad for Vicky 3
The guy with the shiny teeth was a reference to Ron Perlman's character in Enemy At The Gates. He was the guy that got shot jumping across the floor in a bombed out building by the German sniper. He had those gold looking teeth. The music towards the end sounds alot like the music in Red Orchestra 2 love that game and it's sound track.
around min 14? thats CoD2
I wasnt expecting the Rachel Weisz shot from "Enemy At The Gates"
Funny enough the way he shoots the ppsh is actually somewhat accurate. Like he's holding it away from him and side firing. That gun ejects out of the top, so many soldiers would actually fire it in a similar manner to avoid the casings going down their collar.
Just a comment on the Russian submachine gun.
In the 1950's there was a television series called "The Untouchables" who's voice over was done by a staunch supporter of McCarthyism.
So as a joke the production team put an image of that Russian submachine gun instead of an American Tommy gun on the title screen guessing he wouldn't notice.
He didn't
The movie is "enemy at the gates"
Seeing one of my favourite YT channels - Mr. Terry - watching another of my favourite YT channels - Squire - IS BLISS! AWESOME!!!!
New Jersey just experienced a 4.8 magnitude earthquake earlier today, I felt it, it was like if a 18 wheeler was moving right next to me and shaking part of my room.
Can't wait to see more!
6:13 jamed caused Poor magazine quality is not due to gun design. This problem was only resolved in 1943. After the development of the new tipe magazine
There is a documentary titled Shaving Ryan's Privates.
Please also react to if fury was a German film.
Lol, enemy at the gates is the film they were using. And making fun of in quite a few of the scenes.
What would amaze you is if you see thier old vids when they used low resolution cardboard props. Ever since they upgraded their graphics its been impressive.
I believe if a single son remained in service, they tried to move him to a rear area. This was implemented after the 5 Sullivan brothers were killed when their ship was sunk.
Mr Terry, when you asked about the metal teeth. In this they re-enacted the scene from Enemy at the Gates with the jumping scene. In that movie it’s Ron Perlman who gets shot and Ron Perlman’s character has fake metal (bronze I think) teeth
Purple sweater, say less!! Hands down not enough nice purple sweaters on the platform! Big fan
Also "Victoria 3: When You Play as the British", most of the commentary doesn't rely on the viewer being familiar with the game (those games are so complicated even after 100s of hours you still barely know what you're doing)
They had the right weapons. Mosin-Nagant rifles and Nagant pistols. Very good.
Yes. Please. And i recommend: most of them. Just pick at random.
The soviet furry hat is the Ushanka
They sometimes use real tanks from the Tank Museum in their skits.
I recommend Squire's video titled "The worst mega tank Germany ever designed", or "Hearts of Iron 4: Germany in a Nutshell". The latter doesn't really require any knowledge about HoI4 to understand.
Fair warning though, both have a lot of mustache man. The second one involves a lot of dunking on Neville Chamberlain.
I wonder what German version would look like...
They go behind enemy lines and find out the Private Hans has actually just surrendered because he saw how the allies were actually able to use vehicles on a large scale and soldiers didn't have to walk everywhere
8:26 they’re called ushankas at least that version they swapped hats from that wierd pointy one to that
Saving private hans
Saving private Hans
The German equivalent to "Ivan" as a go to name for any soldier would be "Fritz".
I mean, Ivan is very common in Russia... someone call Comrade Stalin and tell him to list all Ivans for the next purge
Squire always cracks me up
7:36 nah you can’t be dissing Bill’s beard
It's not a beard. It's face pubes
Ah, Stalin. First he ordered that if you were captured your family would be sent to a gulag. Then when his son was captured, he sent his daughter in law and grandkids to a gulag. He did eventually sneak the grandkids out the back door. Hey, he wasn't a total monster.
Desmond Dossov, nice "Hacksaw Ridge" reference.
7:11 so we’ll ignore the fact that he’s wearing a German helmet lol
Ngl, the funniest thing is that the main guy looks like Shostakovich.
Make sure you guys are subscribed. UA-cam is doing that weird thing where they just unsubscribe you from channels for no reason. I have literally had to resubscribe to every channel I had already subscribed to. So, just be aware folks.👍🙂
3:46 - 3:47 Can't remember what name they went by and I could be correct or incorrect but there were actual small forces that would kill any soviet soldier that tried to run from the battlefield. Then again I got this from a documentary from Red Star Media so I won't claim to know the 100% truth, so maybe or maybe not its a reference to that?
To let everyone know the PPSH jamming problems was always with the magazines and the magazine well because the way it was designed, the fix for this was to find a mag that worked well with you're gun and keep that mag. The fire rate was around 1200 rpm btw.
It's a mash up of Saving Private Ryan and Enemy at the gate
Not a criticism 👎.
:)
11:12 "face pubes" nahh mr Terry wrong for that one XD!
You should do a video on squire what if fruy was a British film
Now that I've finally watched SPR, I can watch these parody videos!
there are parts of enemy at the gates the sniper with the mirror i think has the same name as in the movie😉
The teeth thing was probably about how bad Soviet dentistry was.
Though obviously fake and ridiculous, the Saving Private Ryan mission didn’t end up being much of a waste of resources in a story because they contributed a significantly to the war effort while searching for Ryan, including taking out a hidden machine gun, killing a sniper and helping fight off the German attack on Ryan’s units position. Hollywood at its best and worst. They try to make a point about whether one man’s life could be worth it, but, in order to make it badass, the team has to have dramatic achievements on the way. Nullifying the central issue of whether their lives even were traded just for Ryan’s or just contributing to the cause in general.
Apparently russia did have a ton of deaths in world war 2, but without them tearing up germany on the western side germany was a powerhouse. My grandpa and his 3 brothers fought in ww2 and my grandpa talked about it like germany was on the verge of taking over the world.
My great uncle got shot through the mouth and survived, my grandpa was on a air craft carrier in the pacific with Japan, all of them made it out of the war.
They are using Enemy At the Gates, i think.
Surprisingly enough, I don't see any comments by angry Tankies.
i actually _havent_ seen Saving Private Ryan before, lol
Alternate Title: Hunting Private Ivan
Traitors don't get potatoes!
I have a friend that grows his facial hair out and it's like that. The reason why is that he looks baby faced. He's 40 and looks like he's 16. The hair is the only way he's taken seriously.
Funny. When I was 16 and I grew out a beard I looked 30(early bloomer). When I didn't I looked like a moderately attractive woman. I had long hair. Metalhead.
you should take a look at his old war thunder videos
If fury was a british film
Speaking of Pepesha (official name PPSH-41), yes, it had an outstanding, though fluctuating firerate, however it was pretty jam-resistant, as Russian tolerances were so high, that dirt usually would be shaken off before it presented the chance to jam the weapon. The biggest problem were the logistics, that due to being produced in bazillions of places (ranging from Izhevsk factories to Siberian workshops) guns and mags had to be specifically fitted to each other.
Just imagine being fired at by a squad of those. Pretty sure there are very little traumatising experiences, that could match it.
Those things were super overpowered in the old WW2 Call of Duty games. 71-rd magazine? Yes please! Get to the enemy line as quick as possible and don't let go of the trigger til you're dead!
The best worst WW2 movie is the Russian film, Elem Kimov's Come and See 1985.
And worst of all... Ivan could be any one of us!
Please react to Squire's HOI4 skits 😂
Defense of breath fortress I'd great
Enemy at the gates was better than saving privaye ryan to me. Especially the scene where the Russian conscripts are loaded directly off the trucks and into the battle. Wild stuff for sure.
Of course in reality the hero would be a smersh agent most likely.
is ivan not a nickname for the russians like fritz for the german or bruce for the british
No, it's slavic version of the name John.
It was used for Soviets during the Cold War, but more of a slur than a nickname.
It is a nickname then used to all russians, but it's because it's common name here. Also its pronounced more like "Eván".
Like "I" in the word "Italy".
Enemy at the gates
Solder: stalin my whole family is dead. can I go home?
Stalin: if you survive long enough to retake your home. Now get out of here if you want to survive my office
US army in 1948 established rule of "last brother". So basicly you dont know history nor what is war.
Chould you react to their "if saving private ryan was a british film"
*Could
Ah, yes: Saving Lieutenant Stalin
Any man can have a beard even if it looks terrible.
The funny thing about beard is that some guys just cant help it and it looks like it does. But still you can take a diet and proper exercises to not be fat.
he should play hoi4
You should watch if saving private ryan was a german flim
Desmond dossov
An American historian that knows anything outside the USA?
No that’s a big ask 😅
Way to admit what you have isn't a beard.
I didn’t know the red army was made up of Brits 😂
Your beard comment is spot on.
Expending Private Popovich
2:20 "what movie is he using..." 5:48 "this is like Enemy at the Gates, have any of you seen that movie?" LOL, have YOU? ......im just messing, i love ya, but yeah, thats the basis for the skit ;)
Are we sure this is not set last week in the Ukraine??
His beard looks just fine, but even if it didn't, that's really kinda disgusting to sit there criticizing others for how they look. I really expected better.
Jokes are forbidden. Humor should not exist. Eliminate slightest chance of being non pc.
@@survivor3833 Found the lazy copypaste troll.
its not that serious get over it
I think I watched the wrong movie...It wasn't "Shaving Ryan's Privates"? ... I would love to hear your thoughts on the "promise" of Ukrain joining NATO and how that violates treaties made.
I really have liked your content but man why you got to bully him for his beard... your a teacher haven't you had classes on not belittling people for there appearance. As a person who has wanted a beard all my life and can only grow "pubes" on my face but good to know if I was in your class you would have looked down on me for it... Not cool.
I thought your beard comment was a little tastless. It was kind of out nowhere
