Thank you so much for taking the time to present these conversations. The lack/absence of any integrated comprehension of a metaphysical ontology has disastrously diminished our humanity. We desperately need these discussions. Much gratitude.
Whoa always excited to see talks like this pop up in the feed! Ressonates with me as I was just wondering yesterday to myself - how do Mark & Iann and other great minds do it?! Stand poised & dignified & speak so clearly, articulately & beautifully in this momentous time of upheaval & social atomization - embracing the divine madness of love as Rumi spoke to. As crazy as these times are, they sure are producing some incredibly rich individuals!
For a tree to reach the sky its roots must go equally down to the earth, our roots have become awfully shallow but yet the branches will remain thirsty...intergration of humilty in each individual is all it takes for us to find a way forward together
I’m happy to hear these sentiments gain traction. I always appreciated how Mark has provided insightful cultural commentary without getting lost in politics and ideological talking points
Absolutely wonderful and needed conversation! I much appreciated the attempt to examine the issue of evil as it appears as hamanity, over the past few centuries, has lost its way in recognizing it and understanding why it's not in our interest to align both the self and collective with it. Additionally, I hope you read these, Mark, as I am curious to know if you are familiar with an historian by the name of Eugene McCarraher who somewhat recently released The Enchantments of Mammon: How Capitalism Became the Religion of Modernity. If so, I would love to hear your take on his study and how it applies to evil, spirituality and the divine realm, and humanity's presently argued meta-crisis.
Thanks and I have read much of McCarraher’s book. The thesis that money has usurped the place of divine longing makes a lot of sense. And the book is full of fascinating historical details. What I missed was a sense of where to go from here.
Useful and I am grateful for, but expected more philosophical depth from the great Dr. Iain McGilchrist whose writings I admire and have benefited from very much: still rereading. Dr. Vernon was well prepared and tried very hard to bring the discussion to a deeper and more interesting level. Thank you. As a side note, Dr. Vernon's book on Dante is absolute an eye-opener and a delight to read and listen to on audio.
I can understand your desire to have more philosophical depth. However, keep in mind that those listening possess various degrees of familiarity and understanding of those things. For me, one who is now somewhat familiar with these things, it was a perfect match for where I am. This was, for me, the best of the many discussions I've listened to so far.
the themes of the Grapes of Wrath being rediscovered here, there is no evil demon but a great cycle here, Who do you shoot? And yet we must find alternative choices. And yes, the cure is Jungian process. No shortcuts.
I remember Jordan Peterson describing truth as that which has been proven to work over time. Lies, then, could be viewed as what does not work over time. Evil might be understood as the lie at work - the application of the lie. It takes time to understand these lies. Maybe that’s why God described himself as ‘I will be what I prove myself to be’. Truth and the lie could best be understood over time in terms of the blessings and curse of the Mosaic Law. Not being religious, I see this in a philosophical way. We really struggle today with the lie. Words were never so flexible and cheap. Context was never so narrow and short. But something, being a product of time, will prove itself to be a new thing. What kind of thing will it prove to be? We will decide by our decisions and indecisions.
Funnily enough, I was just listening to Peterson talking with Roger Penrose, who never fails to say arresting things, not least when he knows when not to say sometime. I wonder how Peterson found Penrose’s Platonic affirmation of truth, rather than the more pragmatic notion of it, which I think you’re suggesting.
@@PlatosPodcasts Peterson seems to me to be part of the problem. He is not the visionary or the altruistic lighthouse in the maelstrom of navel-gazing left-hemisphere thinking (as he would surely like to be viewed). Quite the contrary. He is the Judas Iscariot as yet to be exposed.
there excist a thin book Left in the Dark". its about the change of our dieet (over hundreds of thousands of years..) in relation to hormons (testosterone/agression) and the increased orientation to the left brain.. Im an absolute layman but found it very interesting
All "Literature" has been expunged from my local library. There is no Tolstoy, no Shakespeare , no Tennyson, no Dostoyevsky...nix, nada, nothing whatsoever except a small anthology by Dorothy Porter. It is all gone. Years ago, I requested some books by Harold Bloom who despaired at what he saw as the destruction of his profession (teaching literature at Yale). Not only did they not have any of his books except one ( Omens of the Millenium), but they refused to purchase any of his books. But, I protested, he is one of the greatest literary critics of our time! This is a library! Then I discovered that Emerson was also on the banned list...a foolish consistency clearly prevailed. All that was available of Emerson IN THE ENTIRE LIBRARY OF QUEENSLAND, AUSTRALIA was one of his children's books. I forget which one. I did manage sneak a copy of Mark Vernon's very enjoyable and timely book on the Divine Comedy past the censorship and purchasing committee - who ever they might be, or whatever it is they call themselves. The withholding of "Western Culture" which, as Bloom always insisted was "World Culture", has been quite as deliberate as the destruction of the global economy. The one thing which stands between complete totalitarian control of the world's resources (Building Back Better, NWO... call it what you will) including it's "human resources" is the United States, it's constitution, and the real world POWER behind it; Military, Financial and Technological. Otherwise it is UN - People Centred (sic) Smart City Habitat for ever. People Centred? Do you believe that? I'm so glad I found Vernon after stumbling on him through Spira. I pretty much listen to him most days now!
What was a truly wonderful, and deeply helpful and insightful conversation. Thank you

Nice! Love the symbolism there. I've been thinking of how essential humility & self acceptance is to grace and growth lately.

Awesome! Best combo I could wish for.

Ditto.
and yes, the DANTE book by MV is a true keeper - and to be re-read and lived and absorbed over and again.
