I get it, but Econoline and Express were built to last. I wanted a van that I didn't have to baby or have anxiety about breaking down. Although in retrospect I would have rather had a box truck, I still love my Express. I bought it used. It was a fleet vehicle that was well maintained. I had to do a couple repairs a year after I bought it. Since then, I've had zero major issues. Did have to replace the resistor and blower motor, but that was small potatoes and DIY.

Hi Scott. You are SO amazing! I'm so in awe of your ease in living this way. I want to do it, but I'm a bit scared. I had a friend who would say "one day it will all be clear." I have a Honda Odyssey EXL. love it. I've had it for 4.5 years and i paid $4,700.00 in 2020. I have zero reverse tho. Been driving it that way since 2022. I have a 2017 Toyota Sienna. I LOVE it so much and have had no issues. But I will admit she's not that old. I have a pearl color and get great mileage. Ive been part time in her for 2 years. Going fulltime in the spring.
Check the solenoid pack on the transmission. Could possibly be the problem. You should be able to find a pin diagram online which tells you the resistance within the circuit that they are supposed to read. If your readings are off you have bad solenoid pack. On the older 6 speeds it’s a $300 fix and a few nervous moments 😅
LOL, anyone who's followed you for awhile can't possibly expect a quick answer 😉. You are always thoughtful & deliberate in your considerations! If you end up buying at CarMax, please have it checked - I had to return a Sienna years ago, after my mechanic looked at it and was appalled at the rust on the undercarriage. I ended up getting a camper for the back of my Toyota long bed, which has been fine but I would much rather have a van. I did buy my Tacoma (standard stick) new 10 years ago so I have been the only driver and, so far, the transmission has been fine. My dream vehicle would be a Transit Connect 4WD. An hour long vid was a lot of work for you but what a bonus for us! Thank you! May the perfect van & circumstance come to you soon.
I know you are looking for your next vehicle, but for for others who are also looking to buy a vehicle soon, you offer some very helpful information ☺️
I have 212000. on my Astro. Took out the seats, made curtains & a nice tri fold couch/ bed, ikea full size mattress. Nice for Big Sur, before the road washed out.
Look into "take outs" at salvage yards (on Line) vehicles that have had an accident , but running gear is unaffected. Your Dealership Can search for you, will install it for a nominal fee. Look for low mileage units. I have, and it works.
I vote for a Ford Extended wheelbase Transit Cargo van for more room. They are popular and easy to repair. I’m on the East coast and the price tag has doubled. Enjoying the channel.
I love my VW Vanagon Westfalia. Probably not the right van for you though. A VW Eurovan Weekender or full camper would be sweet, though. My wife's van is an older Toyota Sienna (2006) and has been pretty reliable... knock on wood. That's probably your best bet. You could have the window's wrapped in matching body color vinyl or tint them really dark if that's an issue. Add a layer of Reflectix and call it good. Good luck with your search!
I got a 2006 Sienna as a camping/retreat. Pretty good deal from the owner, on cars d0tcom. Taking out seats, the bolted ones are quite easy while the removable second row was tricky, to get it tilted properly to release. All the second gen 2004-2011 are easier to remove seats than later ones. Took out second and third row and rebolted the front passenger seat onto 2x4 mounts with casters to make it movable. Made a folding sort of hide-a-bed. With minivans, the head room may not be as good as the Promaster city. The plastic wall panels are harder for mounting things. But the roof rack for solar on a Sienna fits 4 100W panels. Heating/cooling is a big challenge with all the windows. Window covers out of reflectix are needed. Still needs a big vent fan to keep temperatures reasonable. An aftermarket remote start is helpful.
I was headed down the Oregon coast to go to Southern California and the price of gas was ridiculous. It was threesome in Oregon and five something in Crescent city and further south with seven dollars I decided to spend my winter in Oregon instead.
If you get a Sienna you are likely to have good service from it with fewer problems than other options. In terms of the windows you could put block foam insulation in them and leave it there, then they would not be like windows anymore! You could also ask the dealer to remove and keep the seats as part of the deal, then you would be rid of them. When I bought my 2012 Toyota Sequoia with 127,000 miles on it I also looked at a 2012 Chevy suburban with 80,000 miles on it. I asked my honest independent mechanic which one to get since they were the same price. He said get the Toyota. When I said "the Chevy has 47,000 fewer miles on it, wouldn't it be more reliable?" He laughed and said "no way, the Toyota would be more reliable with 200,000 miles on it". I got the Toyota. best of luck in your search! great videos, thank you.
Scott...been van life many years, had the bigs and toyotas, currently have Dodge Ram van, Honda Element and a Kia Sedona. I trust the minivan the most and it really offers alot of space and great gas mileage as well as being very stealthy.❤❤❤
Hondas are reliable that’s for sure. I have a Honda Element and it has almost 300,000 miles and still running strong. People think they are ugly but it has low maintenance and large room in the back. They don’t look big but they are. And the back seats snap upwards and snap out so you can pull them right out. I wish they still made them. An electric one would be cool! I hope you find one that works for you! And a good price too!!!! 🙏
@RetireandGo - Off-topic but that reminds me of a cartoon I saw. A pirate ship comes up to shore; skull and crossbones flag. The people on shore are visibly shaken and unsure of the possible trouble that the Pirates might bring. A couple of dogs are also looking, and one says to the other; How exciting!! Their flag says treats!!
I'm in a 2014 chrysler town and country with stow & go seats. I did not remove the seats but there are many others who have and use that under space for storage. I just started watching a youtuber called North of Somewhere. And she's in the process of building out her stow & go van. Mine is a Chrysler and I've never liked the transmission or the engine. A Facebook page that I belong to, some of them have had theirs 400,000 miles! Hope you find the exact vehicle for your needs! 👍🏼😊
My opinion would be to keep looking for a Ford Transit connect. I'd say there's a pretty good chance that you might be able to find one cheaper than what you saw at the beginning of this video.
Scott, I just looked up the Ford Transit Connect and Carfax in Portland Oregon has one listed for a little over $12,999. Also I found another one in Portland 2011 Ford Transit Connect · XLT $7500 with about 111,000 miles
I have heard that the Mercedes is very expensive to maintain and repair. Maybe the Transit would be a better choice for that type of van. I love my grubby old Sienna, myself.
If you qualify for Mexican residency, you can buy a Toyota Hiace cargo van. There are two engine choices, 2.8L diesel or a 2.7L gasoline; both can be had with manual trans and bullet proof.
I Saw a utility truck that a guy transformed into a studio apartment the out side isn’t anything to look at and I think that is the point so that he can park in the city pretty much anywhere and no one is the wiser . It was a really cool transformation . Did you ever consider something like that ? There have been some pretty amazing builds out there and everyone of them is unique to that person so that they can function day to day It’s fun to see how people arrange thier home on wheels living spaces . I think you’ve done a great job on yours . Thanks for taking the world on your travels it’s been fascinating . I’ve been widowed since 2008. I have a small house in central Utah and I absolutely live it it works great for me and I love channels like yours Incase I decide to venture out into the world I’m getting a good education on the dos and donts . I think I would need to do a test run first to see if that was something that would even be in the cards 😊 I have enjoyed watching people on the road and embracing a different way of living it takes a lot of courage and perseverance and moving forward each day with a good attitude and gratitude for this beautiful world i which we live , keep up the good work , good luck finding a new set of wheels I will continue to watch and be educated 😊 Happy and Safe travels
As relates to name brands, I have had very good results from every Nissan I have owned. I did buy a MB Sprinter and loved it. It was the best of all the vehicles I have owned. Two issues with the Sprinter was cost of service and trying to find a certified Sprinter mechanic. A brake job was $4,000.00 and annual service is $1100.00. In my area there is only one certified Sprinter tech in a 100 mile radius of my location. My go to vehicle is always Toyota. I have owned 4Toyota vehicles and never a single issue with any Toyota that I have owned.
i have a 2010 transit connect pushing 300k /// used it in cleaning biz .. 7 days a week ,,, easy to work on .. some people have trans issues with these early ones
Engine & transmission swap / resto mod 😂 will cost ya but that size shape is not easily found anymore. Vehicles are less expensive in Southern California
I'd steer clear of the Nissan van. Most of their vehicles that are front wheel drive have crappy transmissions. The Honda Pilot's are good as long as it's not the one with the push-button gear shift.
I love my 2012 Ford Transit Connect. I've had it for a year . Looks like the one your looking at , mine has windows only on the back doors. It's small but cozy inside , and I can live in it.
Please don't choose a pickup Scott! I just FINALLY got a van after living in my pickup with a high rise cap. It was cramped and cold! Always climbing up and down to get in and out. I was grateful to have a roof but ultimately it would not have been my choice. I just had no other options and ended up living out of it for a total of 17 months. Also, you can't get into the front without getting out in the weather first. Everything inside gets wet in the rain while entering or exiting too. No way to keep clothes hanging to dry, etc. I just know you'll find something so much better, hang in there!
Lol, it's mainly the climbing in and out, and lack of access to the cab in an emergency. Your current van has more room than my truck. That's the reason I commented as I did. It's just uncomfortable. I feel like your van has lots of room, and looks extremely cozy. The truck wasn't cozy in the slightest 😊
I’d say get a low mileage Ford Transit connect. Probably pay more for it but it will last you much much longer and it will be easier to build and live in…I would think most everything you have will fit right in. Just make sure you get the extended wheel base. I’m in a GMC Savana which I know is a bit too big for what you want but the GM/Chevy vans will also last forever and have just enough space inside to be comfortable. Mine is the standard wheel base cargo van.
I've heard nothing but nightmares with the Mercedes vans. The transits get rave reviews, or if you want a standard minivan, Toyota would be your best bet. But good luck with whatever you choose!
It must be like a hermit crab picking out that new shell. I hope you can make the transition as stress-free as possible. At least you know exactly what your needs are. I'll say a prayer for you. Cheers.
Whichever next vehicle you own, do you plan on having basically the same build layout or are there things you would like to change? Hope you find something you're really happy with:)
Just having fun with your channel name. I think of static meaning not changing, but this entire episode is about an upcoming change in your life. Quite dynamic. :)
Hi Scott, 2007-2010 6 cylinder Toyota Sienna. Those are the early years of the timing chain engine, easily removable seats with a flat floor. You can find some 4 cylinder Sienna's, I believe 2011-2012 but the difference in fuel economy might be marginal once you add the weigh of the build out, power might be a problem. Service is easier on the 4 cylider, 6 cyl spark plugs are a PIA. Otherwise, solid vehicles. My 2009 Sienna (135,000) averages 22 mpg and on the highway gets 24-26 if I drive conservatively. 2nd row seats pull out easily once you figure out the trick, third row are bolt-in but removable and opens up a large cavity for storage. The spare tire drops down with a cable (check when you purchase, some of the cables rusted), the spare tire cable release is behind the front passenger seat. The only nagging problem with my van is the heater air vent controller that is worn and sometimes the distribution vents won't shut properly. This can drain the battery. Listen when the engine is off for a clicking sound under the dash and switch the vent to defrost, that's usually shuts off the vent motor. Good luck !

Its the direct opposite in the UK. Most vans like the Ford connects are manual shift and diesel. Love your channel calming yet very entertaining
I vote for a Ford Extended wheelbase Transit Cargo van for more room. They are popular and easy to repair. I’m on the East coast and the price tag has doubled.
Enjoying the channel.
Hello Scott, new to your channel I feel as if I’m there with you thank you very much appreciated. Be safe.
Get a suburban……we had had ours since 1992….we love it
Great video scott, this van stuff will all work out, hello from vanlife in oregon 🎉
You scared me with the Mercedes!!!
It is very scary
i just bought 2025 gmc 2500 cargo with 4.3 good on gas , fits anywhere and u can sleep in it , old school and easy to maintain
Scott...been van life many years, had the bigs and toyotas, currently have Dodge Ram van, Honda Element and a Kia Sedona. I trust the minivan the most and it really offers alot of space and great gas mileage as well as being very stealthy.❤❤❤
I’m ant-stealth. I do as much as possible to let everyone know that I’m living out of my van at all times
I have had 5 vans. My last one was a Ford transit, My next van is going to be another Ford Transit AWD. Med roof. Dual batteries, rear ac and heat.
I love yellowbird too!😀😀
Hondas are reliable that’s for sure.
Exciting ! A new van! This is awesome and looking forward to your travels
Still looking
@RetireandGo -
Off-topic but that reminds me of a cartoon I saw.
A pirate ship comes up to shore; skull and crossbones flag.
The people on shore are visibly shaken and unsure of the possible trouble that the Pirates might bring.
A couple of dogs are also looking, and one says to the other;
How exciting!!
Their flag says treats!!
@ haha truth
@@StaticCamperVan I always liked those high tops
My back would need that haha
:-)
I'm in a 2014 chrysler town and country with stow & go seats. I did not remove the seats but there are many others who have and use that under space for storage. I just started watching a youtuber called North of Somewhere. And she's in the process of building out her stow & go van.
Mine is a Chrysler and I've never liked the transmission or the engine. A Facebook page that I belong to, some of them have had theirs 400,000 miles!
Hope you find the exact vehicle for your needs! 👍🏼😊
Best of luck in your search! It will be interesting to see how you rebuild a new home.
Still looking but we’ll get a van someday
Hope you find your new home on wheels soon !! As you said it’s finding the right vehicle, it will happen ☺️
My opinion would be to keep looking for a Ford Transit connect. I'd say there's a pretty good chance that you might be able to find one cheaper than what you saw at the beginning of this video.
I've heard so many great things about them, I want one as soon as I'm able to get it.
Good afternoon Scott. I am praying for your new home. I love you and your channel.
Scott, I just looked up the Ford Transit Connect and Carfax in Portland Oregon has one listed for a little over $12,999. Also I found another one in Portland 2011 Ford Transit Connect · XLT $7500 with about 111,000 miles
Thanks!
Thanks Jeffrey. I hope you have a great week
I have heard that the Mercedes is very expensive to maintain and repair. Maybe the Transit would be a better choice for that type of van. I love my grubby old Sienna, myself.
And Mercedes are rustbuckets, its not what it was anymore, since years - this comment is from Germany 🙂
If you qualify for Mexican residency, you can buy a Toyota Hiace cargo van. There are two engine choices, 2.8L diesel or a 2.7L gasoline; both can be had with manual trans and bullet proof.
Great. But I prefer to be in the Pacific Northwest. I’m too far south right now
I Saw a utility truck that a guy transformed into a studio apartment the out side isn’t anything to look at and I think that is the point so that he can park in the city pretty much anywhere and no one is the wiser . It was a really cool transformation .
Did you ever consider something like that ?
There have been some pretty amazing builds out there and everyone of them is unique to that person so that they can function day to day
It’s fun to see how people arrange thier home on wheels living spaces .
I think I would need to do a test run first to see if that was something that would even be in the cards 😊
I have enjoyed watching people on the road and embracing a different way of living it takes a lot of courage and perseverance and moving forward each day with a good attitude and gratitude for this beautiful world i which we live , keep up the good work , good luck finding a new set of wheels I will continue to watch and be educated 😊
Happy and Safe travels
No, I don’t want a big vehicle. I spoke to that in this video.
Keep doing you. You will find the right one for you Maybe rent a large storage unit to fux your new fan in rent on month only
Inspired by your level-headedness in moving through the changes to come. Good luck van shopping.
i have a 2010 transit connect pushing 300k /// used it in cleaning biz ..
48:37 Insider secret. Go there first. You’ll be glad you did. 😉 😀 Hope you don’t mind Scott.
I would buy a Chevy Express Van.
Perfect for Van life.
Those mini vans do not have enough head room.
I have one. The Savana. Love it.
I love my 2012 Ford Transit Connect. I've had it for a year . Looks like the one your looking at , mine has windows only on the back doors. It's small but cozy inside , and I can live in it.
You should apply to do voice overs for audio books or training videos
Good luck in your search Scott. Nice video!
I was in a rush but found a ‘15 sienna for under 10k. It was owned by the dealership’s mechanic since ‘17. My only problem with it is the 16 mpg.
Man, they look so good.
Here too, rain in winter means around +2/+8 degrees Celsius. Clear blue sky means -1 to -5! Hate it. Although blue sky is pretty.
You should try to fix your van. You've taken such good care of it that it looks new, and it's what you like.
At the beginning of this video I discussed why fixing this van isn’t an option
You didn’t watch the beginning ?
Please don't choose a pickup Scott! I just FINALLY got a van after living in my pickup with a high rise cap. It was cramped and cold! Always climbing up and down to get in and out. I was grateful to have a roof but ultimately it would not have been my choice. I just had no other options and ended up living out of it for a total of 17 months. Also, you can't get into the front without getting out in the weather first. Everything inside gets wet in the rain while entering or exiting too. No way to keep clothes hanging to dry, etc. I just know you'll find something so much better, hang in there!
Every month hundreds of people tell me that I am cramped and cold in my van
Lol, it's mainly the climbing in and out, and lack of access to the cab in an emergency. Your current van has more room than my truck. That's the reason I commented as I did. It's just uncomfortable. I feel like your van has lots of room, and looks extremely cozy. The truck wasn't cozy in the slightest 😊
@@StaticCamperVan I am cramped and cold in my van but I would not trade it for truck and camper unless I was purely in the desert/BLM land.
Oh, yes the same layout. Although I would probably need to change some things depending on the van size
Toyota is the best you can buy, Honda a close 2nd. The Sienna has a little bit flatter cargo area when you take the seats out.
This is quite the dynamic episode
Not sure what that means
Good luck !
