“I’m jealous of this” -everyone who has run a manual surface grinder.

Zed is actually Y axis. Z axis is always inline with the spindle. Love the project!

      Very true
I'm used to typical vertical mill axis naming convention

    Nice project 👍😀
    I have a question...
Would a stepper motor a good idea for a setup like this ?....
It overshoots the limit switches much less and for the down feed more accurate to set for each step/distance per feed down??...
And how much did you spend on this setup ?...

Very nice Tom. Why the DC motor instead of a Stepper? Was there some advantage? Thanks. Regards.

    • @TomMakeHere
      @TomMakeHere  3 місяці тому +1

Absolutely a reason; stepper motors have torque at low speed, DC have torque at higher speed. The table needs to travel/change direction quickly.
I might do a follow up video on some of the thought processes that went into the video

That’s really cool, this is almost nicer than complete CNC control in my opinion. You don’t have to deal with cam every time or building a custom control software that can toggle between full cam and some sort of conversational interface.

    • @TomMakeHere

      Yep that's the idea
If I was desperate I could tweak it to add functions, but I'm happy for now

This was a quick proof of concept the broach bit is an offcut that was too short to use. Actual ones will be better

    Hi Tom, excellent job.
I agree with the manual Surface Grinder...becomes monotonous very quickly.
When I was looking for s SG I looked at many a manual ones. Took me approx. 2 years to find the right hydraulic one.
So glad I did. Set it running and walk away.
    Regards Kevin

      You can do it! 😁
Maybe a simpler option (which I did consider) is a crank to move the table back and forth

The painters tape trick is genius, as well as using tin foil to wrap / cover your bearings. I love when besides enjoying a great video, I can learn some new tricks on top 🥰
