  • In today's video, I show you how you can kill an old lawn that is full of weeds!
    This is a great way way to start a lawn from scratch. If you kill weeds off now, they are less likely to come back as strong!

    Cheers mate my back garden is in such a state that if I removed all the weeds by hand or with a weed picker it would literally end up as one big hole and this is the only video that showed me what needs to be done.

    Glyphosate works by blocking production of an enzyme necessary for nutrient transport in plants. The plant has to be actively growing for it to work. It has to be distributed throughout the plant to completely kill it. I usually spray and wait for the grass to start wilting and the give it a second spray, concentrating on any spots I missed the first time or any plant that appears to have a tolerance to it. It is important to let the plants die on their own and not start pulling weeds. Some plants are more tolerant, some plants are growing slower, so it takes longer for glyphosate to have any effect.

      Well, if you want to kill your entire lawn just because you don't want take care of it, you're going to have the ugliest and worst lawn on the block, and in the neighborhood. Lawn care is one of the responsibilities of being a homeowner. If you don't want to take care of it, hire a lawn service. But why spend extra money (when you don't have to) to have someone else to mow the lawn, when you can do it yourself, if you're in good health? That wouldn't make sense.

      Actually my wife is highly "would break out in hives, face would swell up and I'm reaching for a EpiPen" allergic to grass, but my wife can handle being near on clovers. I actually plan on planting clovers or some type of succulent covering I actually have over 2 acres of grass and using a push mower isnt fun lol.

    Iv done 3 rounds of roundup in the last 4 weeks, some of the weeds just dont want to die, but 90% are dead now, waiting for the last application to work, hope the last weeds will die.
    Did any of your weeds grow back up?

      @NoviceGardener  Рік тому +1

      I had a few come through. They say that weed seeds can live dormant for 7 years. Do although you've killed off the weeds that are living, there are still seeds under the surface that are waiting to germinate!

      Technically, I don't own the tree - that belongs to next door. But beyond the tree, it's mine. It's quite an odd decision from the developer if you ask me.

    Oh, no! I really hate to say it, as I've been watching your videos since you started, but this is misinformed.
    1. Glyphosate is the active ingredient and is most effective when it has leaves to penetrate. This is the most important point. The more the better (but not overgrown). A few inches is best. I'm fairly sure it even says this on the Rounup instructions. Something along the lines of vegetation must be actively growing and have foliage for the product to work.
    2. Scalping your lawn has made it far less effective. I cringed watching you doing this. 😖
    3. Don't buy brand name consumer Glyphosate products like Roundup at multiple times (often 10x per g/l) the price per litre of the actual chemical. Gallup 360, or similar, can be brought in bulk and diluted appropriately.
    4. Always use a sprayer and don't even consider applying with a watering can as you're wasting about 70% of the product.
    Additional tips when using Glyphosate.
    1. Apply in direct sunlight when the grass or vegetation is dry.
    2. Try to apply when rain isn't forecast for 24 hours.
    3. The thirstier the vegetation and the longer it will go without water afterwards, the faster it will act.
    Despite this, you should still have decent results after the second application, although I won't be surprised if you haven't completely killed everything (due to the scalping) and look forward to your next video to see how it progresses. 🙂

      Food for thought 👍🏻
      I'm by far a lawn care expert, would never claim to be, but just post honest content to help out the novice gardener (excuse the pun!).
      Your advice will come in handy and I'll definitely take it on board. However, there will always be learning curves with any DIY, and hopefully this video helps someone who wouldn't otherwise attempt this.

    • @robert.wigley
      @robert.wigley Рік тому +4

      @@NoviceGardener DIY is always a learning experience. I always enjoy your content and I hope you didn't take it as a criticism. I am by no means an expert on gardening or lawn care, but I do have a lot of experience with weedkillers, so I had to point this out.
      The main takeaway point is don't cut it back so you have no leaves left. You need the leaves to be able to absorb the Glyphosate, as it's not a contact weedkiller. It is a systemic weedkiller and is the best weedkiller available, as long as you're patient (it can take a couple of weeks). When used properly it fully kills whatever you use it on down to the root rather than just scorching the foliage and showing results within hours as pretty much all contact weedkillers do, the effects of which are only short lived as they haven't fully killed what they've been applied to.
      Have a nice weekend. 🙂
