54:05 - "People really care a lot more than I do about students who really game the system, and to me I tell them, if they try it, good luck, you'll end up like Bernie Madoff, life isn't going to unfold for you unless you put the effort in, and I've had essentially no problem, ever, with that."
Oh man, the irony of that statement.

I can see in his quest to 'relate" to his students and be hip and cool, he only ended up coddling and enabling them and in the end helped created the monster that is Elizabeth Holmes.

Robertson is clearly a smart and accomplished (you have to be when you're a professor in his field). He should have seen through Holmes's bullshit from day one and most certainly had the ability to. She did two semesters and then quit. This leads to the conclusion that they must have been lovers at some point. If Zuckerberg would been the one trying to sell this scam as a young drop out Robertson wouldn't have bought it. No way.

Great parts:@16:50, where he talks about teaching and his role as a teacher. Later,@25:16: No exams in his class! He let's them take it home and gives them enough time because this is how life his - you get a problem, you go into a quiet corner and think about it, without the pressure of an exam. Immediately after that he says on memorization: It's okay - to memorize how you find stuff (instead of all those "facts" themselves).

@@bearmerica6668 and I also see he is one of those who contributed into creating a generation of snowflakes who went out into the world thinking the world runs on their timetable and have to accommodate them.

The sad thing is this guy was one of the few people that could have stopped Holmes. He actually had years of experience in science and engineering, he should have been able to reel Holmes in and talk to her about realistic goals and expectations. Instead he fed into her wild fantasies and enabled her on her path of fraud

This guy is a scumbag. I am hoping the Theranos debacle destroyed his reputation, especially in light of what Ian Gibbons' widow had to say about the Holmes trial outcome. This asswipe betrayed Gibbons to Holmes which lead to his eventual suicide.

@@PungiFungi I think as the teacher you always want to be optimistic. I was working on Microfluidics chip at my university at around this time. So were a lot of other people, so it's not a foreign concept to the scientific community what Holmes was doing. Duke university (if I remember correctly) was one of the leading ones when I was working on the project (2012). Hindsight is 2020, but I think what he tried to do was just as many other professors would. Which is believe in your pupils.
Also the more shady stuff Elizabeth did was after she moved on from Dr Robertson.

@@VideoOfMike - He repeatedly traded his reputation for money, and publicly vouched for the soundness of a technology that didn't work. If he knew it didn't work then he's a lying fraud. If he didn't know then he's an unreliable intellectual fraud who had absolutely no business making the statements he did, and should have known better. He's now a man undeserving of respect.

@@VideoOfMike well Holmes never exactly moved on from Dr Robertson, did she. Robertson remained a board member at Theranos, and was hired as a consultant for the company pretty much all the way until it was dissolved in 2018. He was, if anything, always supportive of the company despite its shady dealings.
