  • JAM created the original jingles used by New York's Z100 (WHTZ) when it first began in 1983. The station quickly became #1, and for over 10 years JAM continued to make exciting, innovative Z100 packages which are used by hundreds of stations around the world. We visited Chris Jagger during his afternoon air shift on July 8, 1992, where you'll see him using cuts from our "Turbo Z" and "Z World" packages. We also dropped in on Dave Foxx to see where all of those master tapes were kept. (By the way, even though the station was famous for saying "From the top of the Empire State Building...", only the transmitter was there. At this time the studios were located in Secaucus, New Jersey. But at least you could see the Empire State Building from their 6th floor window, as you'll notice if you watch closely!)

    Whatever about having to move with the times in life, touching a computer screen to play jingles nowadays will never beat the magical mechanical wonder of the carts, and the robust work-horse machines that played them. A truly magical era 👏👏🤗🤗

    0:39 I love that! Sounds so cool and futuristic for the early 90s. And I was born in the late 90s.

    Wow! A flashback to what radio once was...one thing that really surprised me here is the lack of CD cart players in the studio. I am very surprised that, by 1992, Z100 still using tape carts for all of their music. Most other stations around the country has converted over to CDs by then.

      Me too. I'm from France originally and in the years 1992-1993-1994 I went to NYC and Z-100 was the soundtrack of my daily walks in NYC. I remember the top of hour "Serving the universe from the top of the Empire State Building". Today's radio market sucks pretty much

    Click on "more info" and read the extra details! As it says, the studios were in Secaucus. And even though they did have a view of the NY skyline from that building, the window in the air studio actually faced west- AWAY from NYC, and overlooking lovely swampland. Scott Shannon told me that they decided to do that when constructing the facility so that jocks wouldn't be overwhelmed by looking at Manhattan all day. It seemed a bit odd to me, even then.

    The funny thing is that with the exception of 1 or 2 extra minutes here and there, all the top 40 stations in NYC pretty music played the same amount of music each hour. The only difference is that they worded it differently. Z-100 would say they only stopped twice an hour for commericals, while WPLJ would say 52 minutes of music every hour, or 10 songs in a row. I often use to record each station for an hour and calculate the minutes of music/ commercials and there was NO noticeable difference!

    This jingle (0:27) was used for both 100.3 WNIC Detroit and originally used for South Jersey's 95.1 WAYV Atlantic City.

    It's cool to see this footage, especially because it's nothing like this anymore! All of the songs are on digital files and there's a computer and computer program that basically runs the entire station. The on-air personalities basically make announcements, take phone calls, run contests, and provide some entertainment as filler between the songs. Most of the playing of the music & jingles and all technical stuff is automated and done by the computer. The old days of actual "DJ's" are gone.

    If anybody wants to know the music in the background where Dave Foxx is talking, the music is titled "Just For Tonight" by Vanessa Williams..

    @hagios9 The building in the beginning is where the studios were at the time, on Meadowlands Pkwy in Secaucus NJ. Only the transmitter was at "the top of the Empire State building." At 1:31 there is one brief shot of the Empire State building taken from the station so you can see how far away it really was. By the way, the DJs did not get that view because the studio windows faced west. Scott Shannon said he didn't want the jocks intimidated by seeing all of Manhattan in front of them!

    I am willing to bet it is wildly expensive to get a set of jingles made. I often wondered what it would cost to get a set for a Part 15 local low power station for my neighborhood. I always wanted to do that, say on the AM band.

    Wow... Z100 looks like some medium market station in this video. Not at all what I expected the great WHTZ/New York to look like even in 1992. From the bland, suburban office building to the quiet, lonely looking studio. Were the studios in Newark back then?

    • @georgeawestjr.9087
      @georgeawestjr.9087 Рік тому

      There were no studios in Newark, NJ. Still to this day they claim the station is licensed to Newark, NJ. All comes down to geography.

  • @scottstrang1583

    I can't believe they don't have jingles in a vault. Were safeties made and stored offsite?

    • @JAM-PAMS
      @JAM-PAMS  3 роки тому +2

      JAM maintains copies of everything we do at our studios in Dallas, so we've always had backups of the Z-100 jingles. Most radio stations did't think about offsite storage of jingles or other production on their own. Of course these days it's much easier for stations to store copies of digital files on hard drives or CDs that can be taken home or kept in other places.
