Heck, refund everything back to Jan 1st 2000 and start from there.
I could listen to you talk for hours. Fantasy armed forces on their own aren't educational, but they can definitely be a convenient way to bring up real-life reasoning.

For the 3rd question, I'd add Chile to the list of nations Australia could reach out to and form closer defense and economic ties. Both nations are major players in the mining industry with large reserves of strategically valuable raw materials, and both control a massive maritime territory. Chile's military is very Westernized and is one of the most NATO-like armed forces in Latin America. Australia could solidify relations with a relatively modern and capable ally in South America, giving it a foothold in South America, and springboard towards Antarctica, the Staight of Magellan, and the South Atlantic. Australia, New Zealand and Chile could basically control a massive chunk of the South Pacific.

I agree, the Hunter should get 48 VLS, even if the extra two 8 packs are the shortest 'Defense' version and just provides for 64 ESSM's and that would leave the full 32 existing cells for offensive ordinance. I also think an 11 round SeaRam in place of a Phalanx CIWS would be better as they can be both re-loaded at sea and the SeaRam gives more range, engages more than 1 threat at a time and I believe the Phalanx would run out of 'on board ammo' after only about 6 engagements while the SeaRam has 11 on board engagements before needing re-load.

Awesome QnA👍A LOT to take in n process but interesting indeed. I reckon UMSV is possibly to fill shortage of VLS n having Hobart or Hunter size warship as fleet size warship with tanker n unmanned submarines. Increase fleet size but recognise crew shortage. Two part situation that didn’t get ask: Do we need Coast Guard? Even though manning issues or can RAN run effective UMSV for Coast Guard. Second question would be, does Australia need build better inland roads or freeways/railroad to move defence equipment around given if we were be attack?

The Type 23 'Duke' class frigates have actually received upgrades in recent years most notably the Sea Ceptor air defence system paired with the 997 radar.
This takes the type 23 from a point defence system in the sea wolf to local area air defence that is capable of dealing with the supersonic sea skimming anti ship missile threat.
The Type 26's will be a big improvement especially once equipped with FC/ASW and potentially tomahawks.

    • @AB-gi3qy
      @AB-gi3qy 2 роки тому

@@MaCcAM40a3 32 would be fine if the ESSM was the sole air defence missile as they can be quad packed, however it seems the ADF wants an air defence destroyer and an anti submarine specialist frigate in the same ship which is why the weight of Hunter has ballooned from the baseline design.
If they wanted more air defence capacity they should have bought more Hobart's. The UK variant (Type 26) seems to be a perfectly well balanced ship with 48 short to medium range air defence missiles and then an additional 24 Mk41 VLS cells for potentially a mix of Tomahawks and the next anti ship weapon.

Problem in Canada is we want the industrial benefits of military projects of the US without paying for them. The Canadian public really doesn't consider the Canadian Armed Forces an important military player given we feel reliant on the US. • @concernedaussie1330
      @concernedaussie1330 2 роки тому +2

      Absolutely.
Surely there has to be a place for ballistic missiles? They don’t need massive runways air traffic controllers & towers , and anywhere near the man power that’s associated with running air fields & pilot training, ground crews , flight hours of maintenance, fuel costs ect ect ect . They can also be used to boost & project other hypersonic, long range cruise missiles. Surely a concept of fairly low tech bomb truck aircraft , smaller submarines, vehicles & surface vessels could also project ballistic missiles forward or to more inconspicuous launch sites. As well as keeping them mobile & harder to hit on the ground or deploy to friendly nations ect.
More importantly they can be used as cheap decoys to soak up air defence missiles. So cheaper training missiles could be used amongst other “ real “ guided missiles. Deploying drones of all types . To me they are a wasted asset. This nation needs to be able to go it alone & for as long as possible. Thanks.

    • @bernadmanny

@@concernedaussie1330 I agree that a whole lot of missiles is a much more cost effective solution, not to mention that one of the less salient parts of the AUKUS... 'collaborative agreement' was the co-development and construction of missiles in Australia which would have many more follow on benefits to Australia itself then sending super freighter loads of cash over to the US. Not that I'm a pro Military/Industrial complex person, just advocating for the best policy and most efficient spending of resources for Australia if it must happen.

    • @concernedaussie1330
      @concernedaussie1330 2 роки тому +1

@@bernadmanny 100%. It's not pro military industrial complex! It's common sense. If the likely battlefield / battlefields are close to Australia doesn't it make strategic sense to manufacture munitions & common war fighting equipment here ? Shorten the logistic chain ?
Also the ability to manufacture, repair & upgrade systems ie submarines , naval & air assets only makes sense. The US & U.K. could also build facilities here . That in turn keeps strategic interests in this region, so it's in their interests to keep some defense systems in this region. That helps keeps some of our own costs down .

Our government is currently working on getting leo1 mbts, gepard anti air, artillery and ifv's to Ukraine as well as providing leopard 2's to our allies so they in turn can give their t72's to Ukraine. But all this takes a lot of time because of German bureaucracy. After the recent run in's with china I am changing my mind about the B21. I think we should get them. I think we should also cancel the hunters and get some much smaller frigates / corvettes that only require about 60-80 personnel. The Hunter is too big and resource hungry. The arleigh burkes are no good either because to replace the anzacs we could only get 4 arleigh burkes.

    • @joshwright3683

I agree that we should absolutely get B-21s if the US will support that. I suspect they will under the AUKUS Pact. I amni two minds about the Hobart Class. The Arleigh-Bourke I'd truly formidable.
What we need to do via AUKUS is to sit down and design and ship that can be built and deeply maintained in any of the sponsor countries. They should essentially be as automated as possible and expandandable as possible, to the point of adding additional bays to lengthen the ship for additional ammunition capacity.
Look at a platform such as the C130 Hercules that has been developed expanded and lengthen over many decades. I think those principles could be adopted better in ship building.
I 💯% agree with your comments.

OK,..watched the video again. Ill move on from the B21. I think its a fabulous idea to ramp up a joint Naval Base, with FIJI or another Pacific Island nation,...potentially in partnership with the US. This is exactly what happened in WW2 with an Advance base in Suva for example. It would drive economic activity for the Pacific nation as well. It would also be a significant Strategic conundrum for China.
I think your solution regarding tactical VLS module makes a lot of sense,..assuming that the weight issue is solved. And to be quite frank,...not reading Dr Shackleton's paper, Australia still requires a robust sustainable ASW capability. One should not be secondary to the other. Both antimissile and ASW are equally importantly critical for Australian Blue Water and Littoral Operations.
As for Podcasts and UA-cam Channels. The Hoover Institution Videos are brilliant. The GoodFellows are amazing,...because debate issues and often don't agree with each other. You get both perspectives and I think they are grouse.
On Taiwan,....people like Niall Ferguson and Victor Davies Hanson have commented that the Biden's Administration regarding Taiwan is almost hawkish and neocon. In fact they are surprised it does not get more media attention. So I dont think Biden's comments a gaff at all,..I think its a change in US policy towards China. Whether its all talk is another thing? But if it is new and sincere it will be interesting to see if that policy remains after the mid-terms and the next US election. If Trump is reelected,.........I'm not sure he is that keen for such a policy and he is naturally more isolationist.
Disagree on the carrier,......for a lot reasons you already have articulated,..cost, Chinese Missile threat, manning etc etc. Much prefer B21s, Nuclear Submarines and long range air/subsurface and surface launched cruise missiles. Interesting discussion though. F35/B21 and NGAD (with Loyal Wingman) would be a potent force mix for the air combat component of the RAAF. Not sure about the recent Armour Force procurement,....my view has been evolving?? Not because of the Ukraine. But because, Im not sure what such a heavy brigade would be utilised for by Australia? Not to mention sustaining it. The USMC have gotten rid of their Tanks. Dunno,..tanks in the Pacific,..against China??
    Excellent video,..thanks for the effort.

The Russians appear to have focused something like 60% of their forces to fighting for this small 20kmx20km area, and have been denuding other fronts of units. Like you, I suspect the Ukrainians have been holding back a lot of men and material, committing just enough force to keep the fighting going while grudgingly giving ground and inflicting heavy casualties on the Russians. Hypo - a few things.
First up, I have a suggestion on a video. That is the procurement on B-Vehicles. The ADF 4x4 fleet. I must say, I think we've got it wrong.
As an old soldier, (parachute engineer not a driver) I think we should have stayed with the unimog, which is tries and true, used across many militaries and universally available given they haven't changed much.
More importantly, we have recently bought the Mercedes G-wagon. I am not doubting the capability of the platform. I am doubting, for want of better word, the universality of the platform. I have seen a few on Sydney streets owned by millionaires. But, when I look at the difficulties of the Ukrainian military, I can help but think we should adopt the Toyota Landcruiser 79 series (again, not a rep for the product). I suspect that it lacks the capabilities of the G-Wagon or land rover.
The Ukrainian experience reinforces the view that (at least initially) you fight with what you have, not with want you want. Luckily for them, they have received international assistance. We may not be as lucky.
My point is, we should look at what we are blessed with. We are an island nation, we are blessed with sunshine, coastline, an educated workforce/fighting force. But we are also bellesed with more 79 series landcruisers than you can poke a stick at. That is coupled with a commensurate number of mechanics familiar with the vehicle and spare parts that are locally available.
Based on the Ukrainian experience, we would likely lose a high percentage of the fleet very easily on. We may not be able to rely on foreign imports. We will certainly be able to rely on their being at least one landcruiser on every farm.
I an not wedded to brand names but if we needed a few thousand 4x4 we have very few other options.
The same could be said across the board. If we were pushed to a mass mobilisation, what would out platforms be? I a scenario with little lead time we would fight with what we have, not with what we need.
I suspect that now is the time to realise that. Realising it sooner rather than later allows up to map the workshops, understand the logistics, develop armour or radio kits and understand the limitations of the platform.
Could I humbly suggest an episode of you assessing us fighting with 'what we have' in a general mobilisation scenario. I suspect the 737 maybe the airframe of choice, as was the C47 Dakota, and that emergency services radios will be repossessed for military means. Just a thought.
Secondly, your content is amazing, full stop. No arguments. No points for improvement. It's amazing!
Finally, I with your points on US gun culture and school shootings. I have lost both a brother and father to firearms, though I am not anti gun ownership. I think Australia has the balance right. I often wonder whether 'active shaming' plays a part. For example, what was previously known in Australia a decade ago as a 'king hit' is now known as a 'coward punch'. That rebounding to actively shamed the practice, reduced occurrences and saved lives.
The US will do what they will on gun laws. These shootings are well associated with mental illness but the active shaming component may help people understand that they will be forever remembered as cowards. Unlike the US, we lack the arms culture for good and for bad. The Ukrainians appear to have lacked a 'gun culture' but have been able to acquire those skills whe needed.
As as fan I would have emailed you directly but couldn't find an address.

I think my main issue with the b21's is the fact that over horizon radars can pick them up. I'd rather a faster platform with the ability to carry long range standoff weapons like a cross between a B1 lancer and an F35
Which I know is a pipe dream and has its own issues as well as being an independent design unless we got say the UK or others in Europe to replace their tornado fleets with it
You would of course make EW and other versions much like the old spark varks allowing us to replace prowlers and go to a say 3-1 ratio of f35's n this new strike/heavy fighter/EW
Maybe not an outright 6th gen but at least a super cruise larger 5th gen platform

  • @McMeevin

Would be interesting to hear your position on Ukraine now. The UAF is losing manpower at a significant rate, they're not able to replace the losses that are being incurred, and what they are replacing their losses with are civi street average joes that receive on average one months worth of training, and those are the ones primarily being used as fodder in Bakhmut. Sure they're receiving MBTs and IFV/AFVs along with trained crews for those platforms but the front line infantry losses adversely effect the deployment of these assets as combined arms strategy will be impacted when you're utilizing poorly/insufficiently trained troops.

    I spent 14 years in defence. I mostly agree, but a few points I disagree on;
Australia has lost a lot of logistics capability through sucessive defence cuts in late 90's and early 2000's - and we cannot assume support from UK or US to sustain major operations immediatly as was the case in East Timor and the tsunami. 200 x loyal wingman
    Army
    Increase to 18 x CH47
    6 new x MH47
    120 x Blackhawk
    36 x Apache
200 x new amphibious vehicles to replace LARC
    2 x Air Defence regiments
Increase commandoes to a full brigade of 6 battalions, 4 regular and 2 reserve similar to Royal Marines, with it’s own artillery, aviation regiment, close support medical regiment, engineers and signals regiment.
Increase SAS to 6 operational squadrons and 4 reserve spread across 2 regiments
    Lynx AFV with 60mm gun
    Boxer AFV with 40mm gun
    Boxer self-propelled artillery
An MP company to each brigade
A new sustainment brigade to include HR, finance, supply, transport and catering
Add one regular and two reserve battalions to each regular brigade
Add a new brigade to 2 Div to cater for national emergencies and disaster assistance
Two general medical regiments to 2 Div
    Coast Guard

      2) As I said you could pay for this by federalising roads, education, police, health portfolios from the states.
The amount of duplication by each of the state and federal governments in these areas is extraordinary, and goes into the billions of dollars each year.
You could easily enough gain, some of the staffing via recruitment from the US/UK/ France/Germany/Canada etc which we did during the 2000's.
      3) More contraversially, you could open a Australian version of the US National Trainning Centre with a dedicated OPFOR and provide this service to foreign armies such as France, Canada, UK etc who currently compete for time at American NTC's.
      4) An idea that had a lot of grounding back in the 8-'s and 90's was to have a much bigger airborne/ air assault school and teach US/UK soldiers.
